Which Household Gadgets Do You Particularly Love & Which Are You Not So Keen On?

I love my washing machine. It plays music when it’s finished & there are some really useful programmes like a drum clean. Can’t be doing with my American style fridge freezer though. I’d never have one again. It’s massive but just doesn’t seem to have space inside. You can’t put much in the top freezer drawer because of the water dispenser & the freezer area generally is pretty small.

Microwave use all the time.
Mainly for rehrating, defrosting.

Bluevelvetsofa · 01/02/2025 09:45

Integrated fridge freezer, which is more fridge than freezer, so there’s loads of space. Spare freezer in the garage.

Chasingsquirrels · 01/02/2025 09:47

Robovac - would (and did) replace immediately.
Airfryer - very useful.

Washing machine, dishwasher, fridge freezer - I'd consider essentials but never had a paticular one I'd rave about.

Breadmaker - gets used, not sure if I'd replace again (on 2nd).

Food processor - would replace.
Hand mixer - would replace.

SlapTheMelon · 01/02/2025 09:49

I love my shark steam mop, air fryer from Ninja, my rice cooker, and my chopper. So easy to cook anything with lots of spices as long as you have a chopper.

We don't use our dishwasher at all. It is now a storage for extra plates and bowls.

thebear1 · 01/02/2025 09:50

Love my dishwasher, would not be without it. Also like cordless Dyson.

FuckMeUpFlorida · 01/02/2025 10:29

Slightly obsessed with my ice maker, have a thing for 'smelly' ice so having fresh ice makes me happy (friends and family laugh at me about this all the time).

Wouldn't be without my robovac or food processor either.

Got rid of the bread machine but that was for my waistline more than anything else (bacon bits bread anyone?). Interested in hearing people's opinions on soup makers. I feel like they could be handy, but are they any good?

JC03745 · 01/02/2025 10:34

Love my electric can opener I've had for 20yrs, oxo peeler and aga we inherited when we bought our house.

Love my washing machine, airfryer and kitchen aid.

TheNuthatch · 01/02/2025 10:44

My Samsung 12kg washer is amazing! I would replace with the same one immediately if it died. I also love my 10 year old vented tumble dryer.

I have two Shark hoovers (one corded, one cordless), they are both shit. My Henry hoover is fab, I would replace him like for like.

My Meaco dehumidifiers are brilliant. An essential for any home imo.

I also love my kitchenaid mixer. This gets used almost daily.

I hate my Integrated fridge and freezer. Worst buy ever, should have kept my American style.

I wouldn't replace my Ninja airfryer. It's handy now and then but with a big family to feed the oven goes on most days anyway. It's in a cupboard mainly forgotten.

DustyLee123 · 01/02/2025 10:48

I wouldn’t be without my dishwasher, tumbler, washing machine, air fryer, steamer, cordless Dyson, upright hoover, disposable dehumidifiers.
Happy to be without my food mixer, microwave, soup maker, egg boiler, slow cooker.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 01/02/2025 10:49

Love my Bamix stick blender - really powerful but also pretty quiet. Love the air fryer and the instant pot. Our fridge is a John Lewis model and absolutely brilliant - loads of space in every drawer and on every shelf, and keeps food good for ages.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 01/02/2025 10:50

We have a combi oven/microwave - the microwave is brilliant and I use it for all sorts of stuff, but we don't use the oven or grill functions and I kind of wish we just had a smaller microwave.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/02/2025 10:53

I have a fridge freezer. The fridge is great but the freezer - which is all drawers underneath the fridge - is pathetic. You can hardly get anything in the drawers before they won't close. Why doesn't someone invent a fridge freezer where the freezer swivels out and therefore can be a chest freezer but still fit under a fridge? I don't have ANY room anywhere for another freezer, but my language as I try to fit something into the already over-filled drawers, is an education for onlookers.

Manchesterbythesea · 01/02/2025 10:53

I love my little onion chopper thingy I bought on Amazon. It really has made my life easier. Obviously I’d never be without my dishwasher, washing machine & dryer.
My dehumidifier has been a bit of waste of money and I despise my Dyson cordless and just stick with my Miele C3 these days.

vandel · 01/02/2025 10:53

Dehumidifier for drying clothes in the utility room in Winter. Game changer completely.

All other gadgets are standard and been using them for years, nothing stands out really. I just have the usual things you'd find in any home.

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 01/02/2025 11:03

You can get small countertop dishwashers, and some of them don't need plumbing in. You add water manually before running a cycle, and there's a tube for it to come out again that you put in the sink

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 01/02/2025 11:31

Combi microwave is the main cooking tool in our house. We didn’t have a conventional, oven in thé French house for 15 years, the combi and the hob (plus bbq) were sufficient, and I was doing dinner parties for eight sometimes. We have an oven now, but for the electric grill.

Gas hob not induction. I replaced the induction which came with the house after two months of baffled fury. It cost about £500 to get the gas to the hob and it was worth every penny.

Deep fat fryer cost £13 from Tesco , makes proper French fries, little string nests for eggs and Venetian Frito misto. Fab.

I always wanted an ice cream maker, it’s fine but the last two summers have not been ice cream summers so this is its final warning. The slow cooker is off to the jumble sale, I’d rather just use very low gas under an iron casserole .

If anyone would like my air fryer, they are welcome to it; used twice, takes longer than Gaston the combi or the DFF.

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/02/2025 11:37

Yes I agree about the dehumidifier.

I hated my American style fridge freezer when I had one, now I am in love with my fabulous Grundig larder style f/f which is the perfect size for us and has a really nice appearance too.

Snowmanscarf · 01/02/2025 11:48

@FuckMeUpFlorida I have a soup maker. They’re very easy to use - chuck stuff in, turn on, and hey presto, hot soup twenty minutes later. Quite easy to clean also.

Last winter, I was very good at chucking in left over veg, veg about to go off etc and make lots of vegetable soup. This year, haven’t made so much.

AwaitingFreedom · 01/02/2025 11:52

I love my dehumidifiers as they have made such a difference with the general warmth of the house. DD loves her convection heater so she can get ready for work at 6am without shivering.

My slow cooker and rice cooker are still boxed, and my air fryer has been used twice 😬

Snowmanscarf · 01/02/2025 11:57

Our favourite new gadget is a flat cheese grater, similar to this. So easy to use.

Another dehumidifier fan. Clothes dry in half the time.

The gadget I cleared out recently, was traditional weighing scales. Loved the retro look of it, but brought a small, cheap digital scale (for weighing food when on a diet) and got converted. Shame really, but realised I liked the idea of the traditional scales when baking, more than the reality. So they went in a fit of decluttering.

I feel a little guilty about saying tumble drier. They're not essential and... the planet! But I love it, combined with winged heated airer for bits I don't want to tumble.
I considered a counter top ice maker but we just buy bags of ice, £1 for 1kg, so convenient

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/02/2025 12:29

Love my dyson hoover, tumble dryer, air fryer

Rarely use my bread maker (although used to use it all the time), hate the steam mop as its such a faff, I bought a make up brush cleaner which is next to useless!

hookiewookie29 · 01/02/2025 13:39

Air dryer- used nearly every day.
New kitchen tap with a shower spray thingy on it.
