How much fresh fruit do you buy in your weekly shop?

Today I bought the following for a family of four, 2 adults and 2 teens. It got me thinking that maybe we aren’t eating enough fruit as a family? The kids do have carrots/celery/cucumber/red pepper with hummus or frozen berries and Greek yogurt after school, plus there is always three or four types of veg or a salad involved with dinner.

16 bananas
2 nets of normal oranges
2 punnets of blueberries
1 honey dew melon
12 apples
2 punnets of grapes.
will probably buy another bunch of bananas towards the end of the week.

How much fruit do you imagine your average person needs?

RainbowSlidders · 31/01/2025 12:43

I don’t know, the lady in front of me at the checkout had at least three times that amount hence my question.

Yikes, that makes my shop look awful. We are a family of four, but my husband and son won't touch fruit. This week I picked up:
5 Bananas
1 net of oranges
6 apples
1 punnet of strawberries
1 pack of mango slices
1 pack of pineapple cubes

This can't possibly be a serious question.

16 bananas plus another bunch seems a bit much

verycloakanddaggers · 31/01/2025 12:47

How many portions of fruit and veg are eaten in your house per person per week?

It is fine to eat no fruit at all, if you get what is needed from veg.

RainbowSlidders · 31/01/2025 12:48

@boulevardofbrokendreamss really for 4 people? My son will take one to eat on the walk to school for breakfast and then have another one in the evening at some point so that’s 14 bananas just for him.

2 adults 2 under 5s

most weeks

12 bananas
large box of blueberries
1 whole melon
12 apples
12 satsumas

frozen berries in the freezer usually (many varieties). Sometimes do a tin of peaches with yogurt or porridge

not between 4 people! I have one most days which seems pretty normal.
I buy a LOT of veg but not so much fruit as a lot of it triggers my IBS. I have an apple every day Mon-Fri and a banana pretty much every day, then frozen berries or mango with breakfast most days.

TheFlowersIKnew · 31/01/2025 12:49

2 punnets of berries, maybe some kiwi fruit occasionally.

We mostly eat veg, not fruit. The kids like a few berries with breakfast, but I'm a veg fan. I only like occasional particularly good in season fruit as an actual treat, so you're doing better than me!

Xiaoxiong · 31/01/2025 12:50

I think you're buying a huge amount of fruit in the first place so the lady in front of you must have been buying for an army, or a party, or have 12 children!

We get a weekly fruit & veg box and usually there are:

8-10 apples or pears

5 bananas or 5 oranges

One other thing like a pineapple, a punnet of plums or blueberries, a whole mango, a melon - this changes every week

Then I top it up with frozen berries from the supermarket.

We are a family of 4 including 2 teens and that is plenty - any more than that we wouldn't eat fast enough. Even as it is I find myself making banana bread or crumble most weekends to use up fruit that's on the turn.

Davros · 31/01/2025 12:51

None. I don't like fruit unless it's lemons or limes to make G&T or Cosmos.
I do buy plenty of salad and vegetables.

ILY123 · 31/01/2025 12:52

In my house DC has 3 pieces of fruit or more and the adults 1 to 2 pieces of fruit a day. This increases in summer.
In winter i like cooked vegetables more than fruit.
16 bananas
2 grape punnets= I woule guess 8 portions
1 melon= 2 portions
2 punnets blueberry = 4 portions maybe
10 oranges
12 apples
So per week thats about 52 portions of fruit for 4 people thats 13 portions of fruit which is about 2 portions of fruit a day per person per week. Its fine to eat the rest of 5 or 10 a day in vegs.

Tuopo · 31/01/2025 12:54

Just a bag of frozen fruit to go in porridge and sometimes some apples, we mainly just eat veg over fruit, feels better value for money and more savoury fans.

Maybe she runs a juice bar or a scout group.

You eat a lot of fruit and veg. You are fine. If anything, you are probably eating quite a lot of sugar.

kiraric · 31/01/2025 12:56

Family of four here too - it varies seasonally but our last food shop:

7 bananas
12 apples
4 pears
2 melons
2 boxes grapes
2 bags easy peelers
Lemons/limes for salad dressings/cooking

WildCherryBlossom · 31/01/2025 12:57

We eat loads of bananas but wouldn't buy 16 bananas all at once. They quickly over-ripen. I tend to do extra fresh-stuff shops 2 or 3 times during the week to stock up.

In a normal week we would likely eat fresh bananas, raspberries, blueberries, kiwis, oranges, tangerines, apples and pears. Dried mango, dates, prunes, apricots. Frozen mango, mixed berries.

towelsandsheets · 31/01/2025 12:59

2 portions fruit per person per day so you sound fine ( a lot of bananas but I always ate tons of bananas as a child )

countrygirl99 · 31/01/2025 13:01

2 adults.
Main shop this time of year:
6/7 bananas
6 apples
8 pears
Punnet grapes
4/5 nets of tangerines/easy peelers

Will top up mid week with moreover whatever we've run out of. I also eat a lot of veg but DH not so much.

NewNameBridget · 31/01/2025 13:02

There are three of us (two adults, one 8yo) and average werk we have:

5 bananas
6 apples
6 oranges/satsumas
A melon
Two biggish punnets of berries

Often something else, like kiwi, cherries, pomegranate, plums, apricots, rhubarb, watermelon, etc, depending on the season.

Meadowfinch · 31/01/2025 13:04

This week, for two of us:

  • two string bags of satsumas
  • a bag of eight pears
  • 250gm of mixed nuts
  • 6 nectarines
  • 500gm of sultanas

Veggies :
Onions, potatoes, carrots, a bulb of fennel, 600gm cherry tomatoes, 2 x lettuce, a cucumber, 3 leeks, a head of broccoli, a head of celery, a bulb of garlic, a swede, a green pepper. Frozen broad beans.

I always manage 30+ different fruit & veg in a week. I aim to get 20+ in to ds.

SeekingYourAdvice · 31/01/2025 13:05

We buy 5 Bananas (I have one per working day) and a bag of frozen blueberries (I have them on my breakfast) for a household of 2 adults! I eat tonnes of veg and salad, but I've always considered fruit to be less important as it has a lesser nutritional value and contains a fair amount of sugar.

way2EZ · 31/01/2025 13:05

Our family of four aren't too keen on fruit, DS's always say it's too sweet, especially grapes which I bought for a treat lately and they went down very slowly.

I always buy bananas, apples if they look good and are on sale, occasionally clementines if they look good and this is just in the winter.
Lately I've been buying bags of frozen blueberries, raspberries, and sliced peaches.
They're very good, very reasonably priced, and very useful to put and smoothies and with Greek yogurt.
I concentrate more on buying fresh vegetables than I do fruit.

How on earth do 2 adults eat that many tangerines?! I struggle to get through a bag a week on my own.
