How much fresh fruit do you buy in your weekly shop?

Today I bought the following for a family of four, 2 adults and 2 teens. It got me thinking that maybe we aren’t eating enough fruit as a family? The kids do have carrots/celery/cucumber/red pepper with hummus or frozen berries and Greek yogurt after school, plus there is always three or four types of veg or a salad involved with dinner.

16 bananas
2 nets of normal oranges
2 punnets of blueberries
1 honey dew melon
12 apples
2 punnets of grapes.
will probably buy another bunch of bananas towards the end of the week.

4 apples
Red grape punnet
Clementines

Family of 5, I'm the only one who really eats fruit.

Pineapplewaves · 31/01/2025 13:44

It is recommended that everyone eats at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, so 4 people x 5 portions x 7 days = 140 portions of fruit and vegetables per week.

When working out how much fruit to buy, remember to count fruit juice and any salad or vegetables eaten with meals which count towards each persons 5 a day. Dried fruit and tinned fruit also counts.

Remember there is more sugar (natural) and calories in fruit than vegetables, so a diet higher in vegetables would be best if anyone is watching their weight.

I find that fruit can go off quickly so tend to buy a small amount and top up later in the week.

Fiah · 31/01/2025 13:44

I don't. It's too expensive now, so we get our 5 a day from veg and pulses.

Who says?

I'm a bit busy to link sources right now but if you look at things like nutrients profile, protein content, sugar / fructose levels etc. All highly individual of course. An athlete has far different needs to a person attempting to lose weight

Wonderfulstuff · 31/01/2025 13:46

@HÆLTHEPAIN sadly even our M&S are rubbish for bashed up bananas. I find our local tesco express pretty good if you can catch them as they're being put out and a local corner shop near my parent's is decent too but that's an 'as and when' thing rather than a reliable weekly shop.

Fortunately there's a wide range of other fruit to chose from that get's wolfed down just the same.

MsMarch · 31/01/2025 13:46

That's plenty of fruit!

Our weekly fruit intake is roughly
10 bananas
12 apples
2 punnets of grapes/berries
1 melon/pineapple and/or 1 net of citrus fruit.
We also have at least one smoothie a week made with mixed frozen berries and fresh bananas.

I consider our fruit intake to be just fine.

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 31/01/2025 13:47

12 apples
8 oranges or 16 satsumas
2 punnets cherries
1 large blueberries
1 large raspberries
2 punnets grapes
6 bananas

That was this weeks shop.

username299 · 31/01/2025 13:47

Depends but a variation of fresh:
Pineapple
Grapes
Apples
Pears
Tangerines

Frozen
Mango
Summer berries
Cherries
Strawberries

Chewbecca · 31/01/2025 13:49

We generally only eat one or two portions of fruit a day each, preferring to eat plenty of veg with our meals. At the moment, I am eating either tinned peaches or satsumas / clementines, will switch to another fruit, probably pears when the satsumas stop being sweet. I look forward to strawberry, then raspberry season in the summer and probably eat more then.

mrsm43s · 31/01/2025 13:51

I'm a diabetic thus fruit has to be moderated for me because it's so high in sugar.

I probably buy one hand of bananas, 4 oranges, a net of clementines and a 6 pack of apples for the week. There's frozen berries in the freezer for adding to porridge or yoghurt.

That's an average week for a family of 4 adults. That's what? 24 portions? Plus the frozen berries? About one piece of fruit per person per day? Seems about right?

We eat a LOT of vegetables, 2 or 3 fully veggie based meals per week plus a bunch of other meals with a lot of veg. And lunches tend to be veggie either salads or home made veg soups. Because of my diabetes, the whole basis of my meal planning is low carb and low fat (because I tend to get overweight and that's no good for the diabetes either) and as such fruit isn't my friend and doesn't feature very highly.

I think for everyone veg is better and healthier than fruit.

I think it's quite hard to get 3 full portions of veg into meals, particularly the dc

towelsandsheets · 31/01/2025 13:58

2 fruit and 3 or more veg is the usual recommendation

HÆLTHEPAIN · 31/01/2025 13:24

“Its not needed as part of a healthy diet”

Give over. Fruit is very beneficial. People who scaremonger because it contains sugar really should keep quiet.

Even if you follow the NHS 5 a day - its 4 portions of veg - 1 of fruit - my frozen berries take care of that

So what am I going to get from fruit that cant get from Veg?

FrustratedandBemused · 31/01/2025 14:01

That’s more than I buy for our family of 5. I only buy what’s in season so over the winter we tend to have less fruit. We do have 5-6 portions of veg each a day though.

I find it easier to get veg into us all than fruit!

TheCosyOpalFox · 31/01/2025 14:03

When we’ve used all the ones we grow, we buy apples. We buy bananas regardless as son eats one everyday. Grapes for husband. When I’m growing fruit as I say we get apples, the odd pear, cherries if we get it them before the birds, a variety of berries, strawberries and we forage blackberries. So right now we basically are just buying apples, bananas and grapes.

I thought that was fruit juice not fruit? And beans & pulses only count as 1 portion regardless how much you eat.

Annoyingsquirrels · 31/01/2025 14:05

That is around 60 portions so approx 2 portions per person per day. Sounds fine to me assuming they are also getting 3+ portions of vegetables as well each day.

chargeitup · 31/01/2025 14:06

I eat barely any fruit. Half a banana with some berries with some other bits and pieces in a smoothie in the morning and that's it.
I do eat shit tons of vegetables though. I don't really like fruit. It's too sweet

I didn’t say you couldn’t get it from veg. I said there’s nothing wrong with eating fruit.

And the NHS page I’m reading suggests it’s at least 5 portions of a variety of fruits and vegetables.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 31/01/2025 14:10

We use up around 20 bananas a week for the 3 of us and 7 boxes of frozen berries. I got sick of buying other fruit and throwing it all away. We do have plenty of veg instead.

TheBoysAndTheBallet · 31/01/2025 13:06

How on earth do 2 adults eat that many tangerines?! I struggle to get through a bag a week on my own.

Easy, I love them.

We got a box of Tesco finest on offer at Christmas and there was loads in the box. They were delicious and didn’t last long!!!

So I shall stick to my stance that I don't need it for a healthy diet

And I personally don't give a hoot about the sugar content - I never mentioned I didn't choose to eat it because of sugar content , was you who threw that up at me

BeyondMyWits · 31/01/2025 14:24

We eat more veg, not a lot of fruit, we try to keep it seasonal/low mileage, difficult for fruit in the winter... mainly "fresh" apples +pears, and stuff from our freezer.
