How much fresh fruit do you buy in your weekly shop?

Today I bought the following for a family of four, 2 adults and 2 teens. It got me thinking that maybe we aren’t eating enough fruit as a family? The kids do have carrots/celery/cucumber/red pepper with hummus or frozen berries and Greek yogurt after school, plus there is always three or four types of veg or a salad involved with dinner.

16 bananas
2 nets of normal oranges
2 punnets of blueberries
1 honey dew melon
12 apples
2 punnets of grapes.
will probably buy another bunch of bananas towards the end of the week.

Almost nothing. Neither DD nor I like fruit very much. Maybe a punnet of berries. We eat tons of veg though.

Autther · 31/01/2025 13:07

Me, DH and 6 year old, though dh doesn't eat much fruit but I eat loads, especially berries. Usually a punnet of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries and top up the strawberries from the farm shop later in the week for the weekend. About 4 bananas per week. punnet of grapes. Satsumas. Pack of apples but not usually every week as they last a while. Occasionally a pack of nice pears.

EveryKneeShallBow · 31/01/2025 13:08

I only buy in season British grown fruit, so just apples and pears mostly at the moment. I get a weekly organic veg delivery, so just whatever comes.

Hardly any, we don't eat much fruit. I've told DC that I'm not buying stuff like blueberries out of season, don't buy tropical fruit in winter.

It's mainly bananas, pears and apples.

I'm finding fruit and veg is going off very quickly (is it just me??) so I'm shopping little and often.

1apenny2apenny · 31/01/2025 13:12

Doh! Just realised I said I don't buy tropical fruit and then said I buy bananas - this is the only one and is a staple. Dog likes mushed up banana on licky mat too 😀

HÆLTHEPAIN · 31/01/2025 13:16

4 of us here, but only 3 eat fruit. About 14 bananas, 2 nets of satsumas, 2/3 punnets of grapes, a punnet of berries or cherries of some sort and sometimes a tray of melon, mango & pineapple.

Bluevelvetsofa · 31/01/2025 13:17

Raspberries, apples, grapes, blueberries, occasionally bananas, occasionally oranges. Plus frozen berries and dried fruit, but that’s not weekly. Two of us, but I have yoghurt, fruit and flaked almonds most days.

Peaches and strawberries in the summer months.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/01/2025 13:19

Punnet blueberries
Punnet raspberries
Tray of pineapple or Mango
Punnet of grapes
Bag of apples
Two bags satsumas
Sometimes I'll throw in 4 peaches or pears or a melon.

2 adults and dd, 26, home for half the week.

boxyboxs · 31/01/2025 13:21

I think you buy & probably eat quite a lot a week if you do this as well.

The kids do have carrots/celery/cucumber/red pepper with hummus or frozen berries and Greek yogurt after school, plus there is always three or four types of veg or a salad involved with dinner.

AuntieMarys · 31/01/2025 13:21

2 adults....about 20 bananas, 12 apples, 2 bags satsumas, punnet blueberries. Strawberries and raspberries in season...3 or 4 punnets .
Occasionally kiwis/ plums.
Lots of vegetables.

It's like feeding an orangutan rescue centre. But it's good for us so I suck it up.

Although I have stopped buying bananas because the quality has been abysmal recently and they arrive battered and bruised in my weekly shop.

suki1964 · 31/01/2025 13:22

Very very little fruit is bought here

Its not needed as part of a healthy diet and it tends to rot before it turns ripe

I buy a bag of frozen berries for my yoghurt and maybe take a notion for a pear or a banana and then I will buy a single pear or banana

Money is spent on veg and salad veg, of which Im forever topping up

Give over. Fruit is very beneficial. People who scaremonger because it contains sugar really should keep quiet.

Doggymummar · 31/01/2025 13:25

Zero. I bought some apples at Christmas and they got composted. I only buy onions and tomatoes fresh. We don't really like veg

We’ve been getting ours from M&S and they tend to be not bashed and quite tasty and last well. We do go a few times a week though to make sure everything is the nicest.

Of course even fruit is bad on MNs 😁😁😁

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 31/01/2025 13:27

You don't need any more than 2 portions of fruit a day per person. Any extra is just nice in terms of healthy alternative to upf snacks.
Far better to try and increase veg intake.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 31/01/2025 13:29

2 adults, 1 child. Both adults normally eat 3 meals at home, child eats 2. This week it's:

10 bananas
2x bags of easy peelers
2x bags of apples
1x pineapple
1x watermelon
3x mangoes
6x punnet berries
2x punnet of red grapes

Varies depending on season/what everyone's in the mood for/what's on sale!

broccolienthusiast · 31/01/2025 13:30

I can easily go through 5 bananas a day, so a lot 🤗

caitlinsjoy · 31/01/2025 13:32

Family of four. We all have a banana and an apple every day so that’s about 28 of each a week. The children will also have one mini easy peeler a day; we might have two. Occasionally I’ll buy grapes or blueberries or pears but as a one off rather than daily thing. We have vegetables with lunch and dinner.

I think we have solved the mystery of how some people spend a lot more than others on a weekly shop. The fact that some people eat little or no fruit must save a fortune!
I'm in the 'don't like fruit' team. I will eat only an occasional banana but tons of veg and salad.

Tisfortired · 31/01/2025 13:39

Family of 4 but DH rarely eats it and I only have 1 portion of fruit a day usually with my lunch at work. We all eat veg though. This week I got;

8 bananas
a bag of apples
blueberries
grapes
raspberries
strawberries x 2 punnets

CurlewKate · 31/01/2025 13:40

@RainbowSlidders are you sure this isn't a bit of a faux innocent question? Are you really, really sure?

Onlyvisiting · 31/01/2025 13:43

Fruit is expensive and not essential. A wide variety of vegetables is more important.
