How much fresh fruit do you buy in your weekly shop?

Today I bought the following for a family of four, 2 adults and 2 teens. It got me thinking that maybe we aren’t eating enough fruit as a family? The kids do have carrots/celery/cucumber/red pepper with hummus or frozen berries and Greek yogurt after school, plus there is always three or four types of veg or a salad involved with dinner.

16 bananas
2 nets of normal oranges
2 punnets of blueberries
1 honey dew melon
12 apples
2 punnets of grapes.
will probably buy another bunch of bananas towards the end of the week.

4 people, of which 2 are primary school aged.

We get through about the same each week.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 31/01/2025 16:41

My dp and I don't like fruit at all so eat loads of veg instead.

Everybody I know buys it but I notice that loads gets wasted and kept uneaten in a fruit bowl that just gets restocked the following week, for it to go off again.

May as well be a bunch of flowers.

This can't possibly be a serious question.

Same.

What a load of shit, and a lot of people are going to be feeling very inadequate reading that.

OP, that's a shitload of fruit and you know it. And well done on your berry and Greek yoghurt eating kids Hmm

TheCrowPeople · 31/01/2025 16:44

A lot of people are eating a lot of fruit thinking that they're vegetables.

faithbuffy · 31/01/2025 16:46

Must admit I'm not great with veg, so I mainly cook with it and add a bag of the steam stuff on the side
Usually put carrot, celery, onion in everything and mushrooms, and salads in summer
The 30 plant a week thing I'm better at as including herbs, spices, lentils, beans etc I'm hitting that

Love going for a carvery and having loads of veg but living alone it kind of slips by

If organic and in season berries don't really last longer than a day.. if it's fruit out of season that's been flown in I'll keep it longer but i usually find after 3 days it's past its best.. unless it's unripe bananas.

I don’t know, the lady in front of me at the checkout had at least three times that amount hence my question.

So what? She might have eight kids for all you know. Or be shopping for someone else. Or be planning to make a load of fruit-based desserts for an event. Or have a family that eats loads of fruit, but zero vegetables. Or any number of other things that don't apply to your family.

You clearly know full well your family eats plenty of fruit and veg. This is basically akin to those 'AIBU to think my toddler is weird because he loves celery more than chocolate and never has tantrums?' or 'AIBU to wonder why my baby sleeps through perfectly every night?' posts.

What fruit, exactly, do you think people are mistaking for vegetables? And why do you consider this a problem?

RedToothBrush · 31/01/2025 16:51

Stealth boast thread.

Answer: not much. DS is allergic to a whole bunch of fruit and I hate bananas.

We have very instead.

zingally · 31/01/2025 16:55

Our "every week items":
Bananas
Apples
Pears
Grapes
Cherry tomatoes

I tend to only buy berries when they're in season and British. They just taste sooo much better.
Occasionally, as the whim takes me, I'll get satsumas, mangoes, nectarines/peaches, cherries, plums.

ShiftySquirrel · 31/01/2025 17:00

We are a family of four (2 teens), usually I buy:
10 bananas
12 apples
A bag of easy peelers
A lemon and 3 avocados

I buy the odd punnet of strawberries in season, but we grow other soft fruit.

mindutopia · 31/01/2025 17:02

Enough to feed a small zoo and neither of mine are yet teens, and we often run out before the next weekly shop.

rach7979 · 31/01/2025 17:03

Only me and ds24 at home at the moment. This week I bought:

Blueberries
Grapes
Satsumas
Apples
Plums

I posted my list a few posts above that post. I don't consider it a problem Smile It's an anti-problem, a fake problem, a humble brag 'problem', as you intimated above.

'I offer my children locally-sourced carrot, celery and capsicum crudités drizzled with organic balsamic vinegar for snacks. Are two kilos a day an ample sufficiency as they hoover them up so super quickly?' That kind of thing.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 31/01/2025 17:23

Umm non. I find it too sour and have an irrational fear of biting or cutting into something and finding a maggot inside it. I might on the very rare occasion but a punnet of strawberries but they have to be sprinkled with a ton of sugar before I can eat them

Are you normally this aggressive?

You made a blanket statement that wasn’t correct.

Only with eejits who try to change the narritive to suit themselves

But I should learn, that arguing with eejits is a waste of time as they only drag you down and beat you with experience

Bye bye

Ooh, aren’t you sharp?

For the record, for anyone who may be ‘scared’ to eat fruit - fruits are just as important as vegetables.

MrsSethGecko · 31/01/2025 17:57

12 apples
One bag of satsumas

Me and a six year old. In summer I'll buy strawberries.

Chewbecca · 31/01/2025 18:47

boxyboxs · 31/01/2025 13:55

It is recommended that everyone eats at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, so 4 people x 5 portions x 7 days = 140 portions of fruit and vegetables per week.

I think it's quite hard to get 3 full portions of veg into meals, particularly the dc

I would say keep trying with getting (at least) 3 veg into meals, especially for your DC! At least 2 with lunch, probably salad items e.g. some cucumber and pepper sticks. Or baked beans. Then at least 2 with dinner, even if just peas and carrots. I always aimed to have a tiny amount of lots of different veg so a Sunday roast might have a couple of sprouts, parsnip, a floret of broccoli and cauliflower and a spoonful of mashed swede at this time of year.

ExperiencedTeacher · 31/01/2025 22:29

1 adult all week
Another adult half of the week
2 children half of the week:

5/6 bananas
6 apples
Bag of satsumas /oranges
2 punnets nectarine
2 punnets grapes
2 packs blueberries
Pack raspberries
Occasional mango/pineapple/melon
Occasional pack of kiwi

We eat a lot of veg- pack peppers, corn on the cob, baby corn/mange tout, broccoli, stir fry veg, couple of packs beetroot, couple of bags salad, tomatoes, cucumber, sweet potato, mushrooms, cauliflower

narcASD · 31/01/2025 23:40

I don't buy strawberries in winter as they taste of nothing. Same goes for nectarines so it depends on the seasons.
Usually a bag of apples which tend to stay in the fruit bowl all week and then feed to the birds weekly.
8-10 bananas
Punnet red grapes
Tinned pineapple / peaches
Punnet blueberries I'm the only who'll eat them

Summer I buy more, melons, strawberries etc

Eat more veg in winter as I serve everything with a side of veg, even dishes such as spaghetti Bolognese

narcASD · 31/01/2025 23:40

2 adults 2 kids under 13

caringcarer · 01/02/2025 01:39

For 3 people 6 green apples, 6 red apples, grapes, easy peelers, 2 bunches of bananas and a carton of raspberries. Also 2 packs of frozen fruit for smoothies mixed berries and mango. About once a month a melon or a pineapple.

coxesorangepippin · 01/02/2025 01:40

Hmm, let's see

Probably ten apples a week
2 bunches bananas
3 punnets blueberries
Few clementines

I make a lot of apple sauce so the kids have that a lot too
