What 'old lady' things you will refuse to do

Following this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5253796-your-old-lady-habitstastes?page=28&reply=141706023 it was things like doing puzzle books, wearing big knickers etc.

What 'old lady' things would you refuse to do now and in the future?

Mine include wearing beige and brown. It does not look good on me. My skin tones and personality love bold bright colours.

Wearing skirts. TBF I cannot remember the last time I wore a skirt - perhaps to a wedding nor my 74 year old DM.

Have the same foods each day of the week. I know/knew of old people where they ate the same foods each day of the week. Pork chops on Monday, pie on Tuesday etc. Had upset customers asking me if we had any pork chops in as "always have them on Mondays". Plus if their birthdays/anniversary fell on a certain day of the week, their meal plans don't change!

When there is the word snow mentioned in the weather forecast, clear the shelves of tinned soup. Don't get this at all as there are better warming things than sodding soup.

Now The Queen has gone I don't think anyone anywhere dresses like that.

they do in this small, traditional, white, conservative, home counties market town,
we even have two! cobblers to mend sturdy shoes, everything necessary for their support, the backbone, grande dames, the elders, keeping standards maintained

There no such thing as “old lady things”.

My nana had a perm, as did all her friends, because that was the fashion in the 50s. She wore skirts and tights, ditto.

My mum and all her friends, the new generation of older ladies, have a short stylish chop and wear jeans.

When I am an old lady, wearing black leggings and white trainers, eyebrow pencil and curled hair will be “old lady things”.

You cannot escape the march of time, or of ageism.

Edited

I completely agree 👍

The skirts I’m talking about is this kind of thing https://www.damart.co.uk/knitted-thermolactyl-skirt-69260-3.html?color_filterable=44996

I wear elasticated trousers as have IBS

My mother wouldn't wear that awful skirt and she's 94!

However, Damart also sells this denim skirt and that exact look, including the suede boots, is what I was wearing in 1974 and I'd wear it now!

Denim Midi Skirt

This denim A-line midi skirt is a modern classic - whether you wear it with a polo neck or long sleeve T-shirt, it's a piece you'll turn to time and again. # Stretch denim for comfort and a great fit # With patch pockets and signature stitching # On-tr...

I suppose that I’d be considered old by what is said in the OP.

I’m the same person I was when young. I didn’t morph into having the hive mind of the elderly. I don’t consider myself old nor do I look it. That said do know a few people who have always had had ‘old’ viewpoint.

my point is that we’re all different - the same as the young.

"Granny pants" are generally put over the top of a nappy when attending a medical appointment, I suppose for reasons of modesty and for the practicality of an added, sag-proof layer. I don't think thongs would really do the job, although a thong over a nappy might make the doctor smile!

Granny pants are just big pants 🤣

I know a lot of older women who have much better taste than women who are much younger than them, they know how to dress in a way that suits them compared to some younger women who just follow fashion whether it suits them or not.

Also, the last time I was in NY, it was all the older women that I saw who were the extremely stylish ones not the younger ones, they wore beautiful elegant well cut clothes that fitted and suited them perfectly, they obviously knew a lot about clothes and style, most of the younger women just looked like easily influenced fashion victims

Some young women dress well and some definitely do not, same for older women

JadeSeahorse · 30/01/2025 14:15

I think I must be a weirdo.🤣

I'm just 69 - REALLY??- but still 42 in my head.
Size 10, exercise twice daily and keep pretty busy. Wear all sorts of colours, still brunette - with much gratitude to Nice n Easy - with a shoulder length bob and only ever wear dresses on holiday as I live in jeans and sweaters.

However, I do wear leopard print mules around the house, love a yellow sticker bargain and we do tend to eat the same meal a few evenings per week and currently my day to day main shoes are Pavers Mary Janes with a velcro fastening strap.

Does this mean I'm turning into an old lady at last?😄

I'm a pretty comfortable "Boomer" and am honestly not offended by the thread at all.
I've actually had a good laugh at some of the things posted which I definitely recognise but no, not me. Can't possibly be me.😂😂😂

I agree! There are several youtubes of Milan shoppers that I love and when I was last there it was such a pleasure to see my age group (and older) dressed with style and panache.

When I worked in a care home, nursing dementia, Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty came on and all the residents loved it. I remembered it, not my favourite song, and had to look it up as no one remembered who it was who was singing it. Sorry Gerry x

I am finding it increasing hard to drink wine or beer, my body just isn't processing the alcohol properly and large quantities of any liquid just makes me feel too full. I asked DH to buy some sherry (he didn't flinch or question)! I have never bought a bottle in my life but at 53 I am finding a tipple by the fire with a rug over my legs quite exciting! Grin

sherry is having quite the moment. You are on trend!

I don’t know what’s old ladyish about skirts op

Yet its more difficult to buy in supermarkets around here. Just the supermarket own label. Not Croft or Hardys Bristol Cream (that is horrid)

A really cold dry sherry is a thing of wonder @Auburngal

ManchesterLu · 30/01/2025 14:41

To be honest I don't think any of those things are "old lady" things. I think they're just generational, and people who are old now have probably behaved like that all their lives.

You don't have to change anything as you age if you don't want to. Eat when/what you want, wear what you want, watch and read and do what you want.

Nobody's making anyone change!

Oh yippee. More opportunity to be Ageist. Just what MN needs

My goodness people really are offended by absolutely everything these days

Purplecatshopaholic · 30/01/2025 14:49

I don’t care what age I am, I am not wearing ugly shoes, lol. I don’t see myself letting my hair go grey either (it’s currently pink).

T4phage · 30/01/2025 14:53

Watching the bbc
Eating Werthers Originals
Using a doiley
Wearing a brooch
Having fluffy stuff on the toilet

I do other old lady things though.

Crochet
Using a teapot
Cats
Rugs
Going to church
Discussing the neighbours
Getting excited about going to the garden centre.

maudelovesharold · 30/01/2025 14:54

When I qualify as an old lady (currently in my 50s)

Sorry to break it to you, but on MN, you already do Grin (as do I!)

Traceysgoingtobelivid · 30/01/2025 14:54

This thread is appalling the comments about the elderly and less able are disgraceful I’m surprised this is allowed.

I'm older and I'm not bothered. We all get old, it's good to retain a sense of humour about it. Nobody would be objecting if people were describing funny things toddlers do.

I'm up for laughing at myself. And at these young things who don't know what's coming! I remember when I didn't have to think "better take the opportunity" and rather looked down on those who did. Life gets its own back.

I am a real Old Lady now AND I HAVE THE BUS PASS TO PROVE IT.

I've always worn ugly shoes and now I've realised that Hotter shoes grip like The Fly even on sheet ice I no longer care. Still can't wear beige though.

Rogerisourlodger · 30/01/2025 15:01

All the so called 'old ladies' I know spend their time volunteering in schools, libraries, for charities: setting up groups for people older and younger than themselves; supporting others; campaigning tirelessly for the community.

They're such impressive women that I couldn't give a flying fuck how they dress, shop, or what they eat on a particular day.

TheStigarette · 30/01/2025 15:02

Younger women sneering at older women is not the same as older women laughing at ourselves.

Watch countryfile. Enjoy hiking or whatever it is they do with those poles. Have a padded lap tray

I do all these and I'm in my 40s 😆

Wearing beige or stone - they make me look like a corpse.
Any kind of crafts involving sewing, knitting or crocheting.
Letting my hair go grey.
Using talc.
Doing word searches, puzzle books or sudoku.
Using a shopping trolley or rollator. I will consider a walking stick though as they can be used to fend off unwanted people or dogs.
Drinking Ovaltine.

Wait until you are in severe pain and your mobility significantly affected because you need a hip replacement. You'll welcome a walking stick and if you end up "bone on bone", a rollator.
