What 'old lady' things you will refuse to do

Following this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5253796-your-old-lady-habitstastes?page=28&reply=141706023 it was things like doing puzzle books, wearing big knickers etc.

What 'old lady' things would you refuse to do now and in the future?

Mine include wearing beige and brown. It does not look good on me. My skin tones and personality love bold bright colours.

Wearing skirts. TBF I cannot remember the last time I wore a skirt - perhaps to a wedding nor my 74 year old DM.

Have the same foods each day of the week. I know/knew of old people where they ate the same foods each day of the week. Pork chops on Monday, pie on Tuesday etc. Had upset customers asking me if we had any pork chops in as "always have them on Mondays". Plus if their birthdays/anniversary fell on a certain day of the week, their meal plans don't change!

When there is the word snow mentioned in the weather forecast, clear the shelves of tinned soup. Don't get this at all as there are better warming things than sodding soup.

Aside from the granny panties, these are almost all just generational trends.
that one you will understand when your skin becomes increasingly delicate.

Wear briefs/granny pants. Thongs for life!

I hope you never get Lichen Schlerosis!

Wear briefs/granny pants. Thongs for life!

They’re useless for keeping a tena pad in place

RoWTok · 30/01/2025 13:08

Isn’t the beige and brown combo a current GenZ trend?

I genuinely don't understand how people can wear thongs and think they're comfortable! I think I've worned them twice in my entire life 😁

VeryQuaintIrene · 30/01/2025 13:09

Big knickers rock! And I will cheerfully eat the same things on the same day each week so that I can think about more interesting things the rest of the time. But, yeah, very odd ideas from OP about what it means to grow older.

Cloacina · 30/01/2025 13:09

I won't be ageist, I won't hate women, I will reject stereotypes. Horrible thread.

Wear hideous American tan rights or stockings. Black purple or navy for me! Or groovy patterned ones.

Get a blue rinse.

take up bingo

Drink sherry. I prefer a dry white and a glass of Ballycastle

Are you living in 1976?

Lovethatforyouhun · 30/01/2025 13:10

Grannycore is cool!
I just hope I make it. My mother didn’t.

creamsnugjumper · 30/01/2025 13:10

My DM is 80 and the only older person thing she does is refuses to get her hearing checked!

I have sworn to myself I will look after myself and. It be stubborn.

As for the fashions I'd swop clothes with my mum any day, she's a jeans and trainers person- Not all older women were old clothes?

Moonlightstars · 30/01/2025 13:10

Given that I am pretty old I think I'm not going to give a fuck what younger people think is old and ignore their childishness.
That's the best thing about being old if you tend to give much less of a fuck about what others think. It's absolutely brilliant.

Hopefully you never develop particularly heavy periods or other medical issues. Then I'm afraid thongs just won't cut it.

Klozza · 30/01/2025 13:11

I’ve always been very alternative, so I have a lot of tattoos and I don’t plan on covering them or removing them as I get older. Same with some of my piercings and my style. Although I’m not sure I’ll get away with wearing fishnet tights when I’m 80

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/01/2025 13:11

Me too! I am wearing a skirt and floral perfume as I write this, and after my Badedas bath tonight I will make a point of powdering my feet while feeling grateful that I am not so repelled and fearful of old age that I pretend it will never happen to me if I don't wear glasses on a chain.

Edit: I lost my quote Sad. I was quoting the person who said she has been doing many of these things since she was a child.

Crazytimesbackthen · 30/01/2025 13:12

What age will you all migrate over to Gransnet or are you already flitting between there and here 🤔

Screamingabdabz · 30/01/2025 13:12

What a nasty thread. Imagine this same level of judgement on say single mums or millennials…

I do love big knickers, I’m only 29 but after having my second baby I much prefer some big ol’ comfy knickers over sexy ines 😂

heavenstruck · 30/01/2025 13:12

I do these old lady things and I'm 28 🤣 except clear the shelves of soup..

Coffeeishot · 30/01/2025 13:13

My mum is an old lady last time I saw her in a skirt(well dress) was at a wedding last year what's old lady about a skirt?

Waitingfordoggo · 30/01/2025 13:13

TallulahBetty · 30/01/2025 12:28

Wear briefs/granny pants. Thongs for life!

I wonder if the balance of what is considered 'old lady' will eventually switch. I'm in my 40s- me and most of my friends wear big pants while my 79 year-old MIL wears thongs 😂

Beamur · 30/01/2025 13:13

I'd quite like to refuse the risk of dementia, reduced bone density, muscle wastage and breaking my hip.
I just don't recognise a lot of these stereotypes in the older people I know. But you are always going to look different to a younger generation - the things we like we tend to keep liking - the people with floral duvet covers probably bought them first when they were more fashionable. The things you like now will probably be gently mocked by your own kids.
Some of these granny things are a part of getting older - our bodies change, our eyesight really changes (not fun at all) and it affects some people more than others.
I know this is meant to be a light hearted thread but age comes to us all.

Wear briefs/granny pants. Thongs for life!

Horrible vision of saggy, crepey bumcheeks divided by thongs!

NagathaCrispy · 30/01/2025 13:14

I'm old (71) but I'm just flat out refusing to get elderly!!!

I keep my body and mind active, socialise with friends - most of whom are 20-25 years younger than me, and I dress probably too young for my age but couldn't care less (just been to the shops in skinny jeans and Doc Martens).

Getting old, I have discovered, is a state of mind.

Nessastats · 30/01/2025 13:14

I already do most of these and I'm in my 30s. Couldn't give a shit, I'm comfortable in my granny pants and cardigans.

I hope I'll never become the sort of person who judges other people for what they choose to wear, or use "old lady" as an insult.
