What modern invention is meant to be helpful but is the opposite?

Snooze button…

I’m so used to it now I sleep through for ages hitting snooze. So today when I really had to get up early I didn’t. And missed my train.

I am blaming the invention of snooze rather than admit my own imperfection 😁

Leafblowers. Incredibly noisy, use fossil fuels, loads of fumes, ineffective on wet leaves and not very good on dry ones. Hate the things - what's wrong with a rake?

GooseberryBeret · 29/01/2025 07:21

AI.
I’ve seen people on here say they personally find it useful but it’s just so annoying having to wade past all the constant crap, the environmental cost is awful and the potential downsides of widespread use are really worrying.

ThejoyofNC · 29/01/2025 07:23

Any type of electric can opener.

MyIvyGrows · 29/01/2025 07:24

Social media. Found a new recipe? Great! Stayed up until past midnight scrolling nonsense? Not great.

HeronWing · 29/01/2025 07:24

The internet, kind of. It supposedly saves us time in giving us endless information at our fingertips. And what do we do with all this extra time? We give it to the internet.

Calmhappyandhealthy · 29/01/2025 07:25

Electric/battery salt and pepper grinders!

Just - why? Are both your wrists broken? 😁

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 29/01/2025 07:25

Qr codes. Ugly, too easy to tamper with and on bloody everything nowadays.

thinktwice36 · 29/01/2025 07:25

Garlic crusher. Just use a sharp knife and save yourself the cleaning ballache.

SpanishGuitarAndTapasSeduction · 29/01/2025 07:27

Printers. They're always failing or winging for yet more ink and paper. They're tempremental and unreliable.

HippyDays · 29/01/2025 07:32

Leaf blowers and electric tin openers yes yes yes!

AI, internet, social media totally agree (though the last two I think is also me blaming technology for my own faults)!

QR codes yes, just seem to be created to help thieves steal yet more money from unsuspecting people.

Salt/pepper grinders and garlic crusher I can’t comment on as I’m a terrible cook and don’t use them at all - maybe I need to stop snoozing and find some recipes on the internet with the time I’ve saved 😋

It's really helpful if you have rheumatoid arthritis, like I do.

Plus the ink turns out to be more expensive than platinum.

Or one hand. Like me

Moonmelodies · 29/01/2025 07:37

Automated sinks that are supposed to give you soap, water, and dry your hands without touching anything. I've never found one that does more than one function properly, usually the soap bit.

Not everyone has two hands you know. Or full
mobility in the ones they have FGS

Frostine · 29/01/2025 07:39

Any small gadget designed to help with chopping ,slicing ,mixing , pureeing . Is a pain in the ass to dismantle and clean .
You end up not using the bloody thing , and storing it away , and doing it the usual way.

Thank you 👍, some people have no idea how difficult basic tasks can be for some people.

DelectableMe · 29/01/2025 07:43

@Donttellempike - I got one of those Lakeland Helping Hands garlic crusher, which I can use, I don't know if it would suit your needs.

The tills where I work! I often say to customers that we have the technology to send people into space yet create tills like ours which could easily do the job they’re designed to do so much better! Drives me & my colleagues mad with the speed & general inefficiency sometimes! Having said that, it’s not all cash registers.

Off topic slightly 🫢.....how does your leafblower manage when the leaves are on little stones/gravel?

Modern car "safety" systems. Constant fucking beeping and chiming, mine beeps anytime I take my eyes off the road, and it flashes a warning up on the infotainment screen to tell me . . but . .

I HAVE TO TAKE MY EYES OFF THE ROAD, TO READ THE BLOODY WARNING TO TELL ME I'VE TAKEN MY EYES OFF THE ROAD!!!!!
