What modern invention is meant to be helpful but is the opposite?

Snooze button…

I’m so used to it now I sleep through for ages hitting snooze. So today when I really had to get up early I didn’t. And missed my train.

I am blaming the invention of snooze rather than admit my own imperfection 😁

@Printedword - I'm still looking for a good jar opener! If anyone can recommend one, I'd be grateful!

Qr code only menus, absolutely hate them. Don’t find them user friendly. Prefer having a paper copy, especially when on holiday abroad. Also pay by app only parking, when that’s the only payment option and they charge you extra to pay that way. Include it in the price. Personally I don’t think they should be allowed to charge extra.

Have a look at the one i posted earlier - it's brilliant.

Toothpaste dispenser. Purchased to help my 6 year old get his own toothpaste. Dispenses it badly for everyone and is fixed to the wall so is a nightmare to clean.
Bluetooth operating on things like washing machines/dishwashers
It's more thing to go wrong and I never remember.

Kitchensinktoday · 29/01/2025 18:55

Passport scanner machines at airports. Getting into Corfu (there was a man in a booth with a stamp) was far quicker than getting into Manchester on the way back - passport scanners only seem to work on the third attempt, and every fourth passenger needed human assistance.

I’m all for technology but it needs to work!

Leafblowers. Incredibly noisy, use fossil fuels, loads of fumes, ineffective on wet leaves and not very good on dry ones. Hate the things - what's wrong with a rake”

Gggrrr! Hate the bloody things. Neighbour across the road has a gardener who blows all of the leaves from their very big front garden and drive out onto the pavement, weekly. They then, of course, blow along the road and go into everyone else’s property and clog up the drains in the kerb.

Agree. It's so bloody distracting- it has to be dangerous! Why can't you mute all the noises like you can on your phone?

Likewise, I don't really need my washing machine going on at me to tell me the wash has finished. I'll hang it out in my own time, thanks.

Maybe you can? In some cars you can change the tone and sound level of the beeping. If you've lost your manual, these are often available online through the manufacturer's homepage.

So many streaming options. I end up not watching anything as I can’t decide

My solution is to set multiple alarms at random intervals.

Normally the brain is like ah cool I know the drill, I got five mins then we snooze again.

With the above method, the brain is eventually like what in the hells bells is going on, and wakes you up sort out the indignity of the situation by which point you get up 😂

Electric/battery salt and pepper grinders!

Just - why? Are both your wrists broken? 😁

Love my electric salt and pepper grinders, and yes, problems with hands so grinding action isn't easy. Thanks for asking 😌

Modern car "safety" systems. Constant fucking beeping and chiming, mine beeps anytime I take my eyes off the road, and it flashes a warning up on the infotainment screen to tell me . . but . .

I HAVE TO TAKE MY EYES OFF THE ROAD, TO READ THE BLOODY WARNING TO TELL ME I'VE TAKEN MY EYES OFF THE ROAD!!!!!

What car model beeps if you take your eyes off the road?

Push button starters for cars. Because now I have to find somewhere to put my keys while I am driving, and remember to pick them up when I get out of the car. If only there was a handy place to plug them in so I never lost them.

Handbag?

LuluBlakey1 · 30/01/2025 01:01

Don't get me started. Shops are full of modern shit that adds to our landfill, is useless crap, is barely used and mostly made of plastic. It's one of my pet hates- all of it.

I don't have a problem with apps as an option but I do have a problem with car parks being app only.

I have coins in the car, but generally waving a card at the machine is the easiest option.

Yes, indeed. It's like with the banks: they brought in online banking as a very useful facility for most people; but then they reached a point where they just decided to close branches and remove a vital facility from loads of elderly people for whom doing things online just doesn't work for various reasons.

It's a bit like opening a cafe and realising that a cheese sandwich is popular, easy and convenient for you to make, and so having nothing but a cheese sandwich for everybody to 'choose' from on the menu.

Handbag?

Cars used to come as standard with a dedicated knob on the dashboard for you to hang your handbag - but if you left it there for any length of time, it flooded the engine Grin

Drinkingteathroughastraw · 30/01/2025 05:09

WhatsApp voice notes!
Possibly slightly easier for the person sending them (although never worked for me) and a right pain for anyone receiving them!

Those jumbo toilet roll holders in public loos where you can never find the end of the paper.

My new Volvo tells me off if I yawn - it has a little sensor behind the wheel which can spot a wide open mouth. It mutes the radio, beeps at me, flashes up a picture of a cup of tea and displays a message telling me to take a break. All fine in theory, but unfortunately I like to sing along to the radio and it keeps mistaking my mouth shape when I’m hitting the high notes for me having a big old yawn. So it mutes the music at the worst possible moment as suddenly all I can hear is beeping and the sound of my own voice wailing to Total Eclipse of the Heart.

That is hilarious!

AI. Dreadful for the environment and I have seen research inducating that outsourcing basic thought processes leads to cognitive decline. Unsurprisingly.

Only those above a certain age will know what you are referring to.

I agree with loads of these.

Tesla have replaced the indicator stick with a button on the steering wheel. So if you are turning right on a mini roundabout, the indicator can be on the opposite side of the wheel to normal and upside down. I absolutely hate it and think it's an accident waiting to happen.

Those cybertrucks have a shelf in front of the headlights that gets choked with snow too. Fucking stupid design.
