King size duvet on double bed - worth it?

MJconfessions · 28/01/2025 18:00

Bit random but I heard using a king size duvet on a double bed is a “game changer”. Is this true?

I don’t know whether it’s worth it to the extent of having to replace all my double size duvet covers…

No, the game changer is getting a king size bed.

Ponderingwindow · 30/01/2025 13:15

Going king is good, but even better is getting two doubles. Having your own duvets is the real game-changer. No more tugging. Burrito to your heart’s content. Kick your covers off if you want. You also get to select personalized weights for even more comfort.

for making the bed, just get a king size coverlet to throw over the blankets so it looks tidy.

On the mismatched covers thing we have mismatched but when making the bed my double duvet goes underneath DH's King sized so looks like a normal made bed.

2 single duvets all the way! DH doesn't wake me up any more when he rolls himself into a burrito.

ProperSleep · 30/01/2025 19:23

That makes me feel better, @Breathmiller !

We had a king size duvet on a double bed for years - so much better, less fighting over the duvet. However, since menopause I've always been hot in bed, so we had a thin duvet, whatever time of year, and DH had to pile up extra single duvets and blankets, which sometimes slid off in the night. Then I read on hear about using two single duvets, so now we do that - gamechanger. Not only do we get our preferred duvet weight, when he comes to bed after me he's not rearranging the duvet that I'm using and letting in draughts, and if I'm restless in the night I can shuffle around a bit without disturbing him.

Re previous questions on this: we bought matching single duvets; there's no gap in the middle, in fact they overlap a bit (don't know if this would be true for king size beds); they look neat enough to me, but to be honest I don't much care - we don't use our bedroom in the day anyway, and I care more about a good night's sleep.

Two single duvets is the real game changer

Two king sized duvets are even better! 🤭

HPandthelastwish · 30/01/2025 20:34

Go for two singles, matching bedding and then a bedspread over the top to tidy it all up

WolfFoxHare · 30/01/2025 20:37

I don’t really think a single duvet each would work for us. DH and I often sleep spooned up together, if we had single duvets they’d either have to overlap or there would be a gap where the cold could get in. Massive super king duvet on a double is the way to go.

CaptBirdsEar · 30/01/2025 20:49

I'm in a king with a double duvet but as I sleep alone it's fine.

I this thought too. Plus are people using 2 matching duvet covers for both duvets? Or mismatched covers for each?

I’m not sure if I’m going to go for it yet. Mainly as don’t want to stop using my current amazing duvet covers!

I have plain white linen bedding. I don’t really understand why mismatched bedding would be an assumption, it’s not hard to buy two matching ones. I just fold the duvets back during the day and don’t care about a perfect smooth duvet look, I prioritise comfort, but if I did care I’d use a bedspread.

Propersleep,it's like when I was a child, you had a top and bottom sheet, then it was blanket and or eiderdown which was a quilt.. the bed has drawers underneath. The duvet is very soft, pliable, just lays against the bed, there's nothing sticking out to fall over. Very aware of falls and trips (nursing over 40 years)Not sure where you live,we used to have a thicker tog in our last house which was cold. For 10/12 years we've had a 4.5 tog, I couldn't find a "coverless under a 7.5. so that's what I got. In autumn I found it too hot. Of late,a few frosts and tonight 3c,it's just right. I don't know anyone in the UK who sleeps under anything above a 10 tog. I'm allergic to wool, and I need to be able to move,so lightweight. With my hands and wrists, I had huge problems changing the duvet cover.

Authorperson · 30/01/2025 22:27

I shudder to think of sharing a duvet, it's been so long since I realised I didn't have to

TheScenicWay · 30/01/2025 22:38

I stopped sharing when I got pregnant (got too hot) and have never looked back.
I sleep much better as it feels like in my bed by myself.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 30/01/2025 22:40

Definitely cosier but more trouble to change, wash and dry.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 30/01/2025 22:43

Aimtodobetter · 28/01/2025 18:09

Yes! I have a super king duvet on a king bed.

I have this too.

Definitely a game changer

IMustDoMoreExercise · 30/01/2025 22:47

jumperround · 28/01/2025 18:12

the only annoying thing is as it is heavier it is easier for it to be pulled over and hang off the edge leaving one person cold!

I use nappy pins to pin the duvet cover to the fitted sheet at the bottom of the bed as I got fed up of this happening..

Another game changer!

senua · 30/01/2025 22:55

[a king sized duvet] is closer to square so it is easy to accidentally put it in the wrong way round.
True but simple to remedy: I've marked the duvet with laundry pencil so I know which is the button/popper end.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/01/2025 22:56

Absolutely. Our grandson’s bed at our house has a double on his 3ft bed too.

mondaytosunday · 30/01/2025 23:12

At least one size up for sure.
