King size duvet on double bed - worth it?

MJconfessions · 28/01/2025 18:00

Bit random but I heard using a king size duvet on a double bed is a “game changer”. Is this true?

I don’t know whether it’s worth it to the extent of having to replace all my double size duvet covers…

We had super king on a double bed- perfect.
now have a king size bed with super king duvet- v good

NosyJosie · 29/01/2025 21:01

Always use a size bigger than the bed. Totally worth it.

Yes!

We also have more duvet than bed - king-sized on a double bed. It's great if one or both of you is larger, a restless sleeper, or sleeps on your side, as eventually, some of the extra duvet will fall into the wind-tunnel between you and put a stop to that unpleasant tenting sensation around your neck and whichever shoulder isn't on the mattress.

I hadn't thought of two separate duvets. . .it's an interesting idea and again, gives you more duvet than bed.

Seems unanimous then!

Two singles is better than one oversized. Even on our 6ft bed. No issues with the other person moving around plus you can each choose your preferred type/weight/tog. I have wool, my husband prefers down. And they’re easy to change.

Two single duvets is the real game changer

And separate doubles on a super-king will absolutely change your life.

Totally ruins you for hotels or staying at the MILs, though.

Mannersmattertoo · 30/01/2025 08:18

For all of the people using 2 duvets per bed, doesn't it look messy through the day though, when you make the bed? I use a top sheet so I'm not sure this would work for me, although I'm so tempted. We have a superking duvet on a superking bed; not much choice. What size bed does two doubles equal?

okydokethen · 30/01/2025 09:53

Oh no separate duvets if you can't do separate beds.

I this thought too. Plus are people using 2 matching duvet covers for both duvets? Or mismatched covers for each?

I’m not sure if I’m going to go for it yet. Mainly as don’t want to stop using my current amazing duvet covers!

We are also new converts to two duvets. Dh has the King Size we had before and I have a double with a brushed cotton cover for winter. It is so cosy. We share a king size in summer.

ProperSleep · 30/01/2025 10:19

Or mismatched covers for each?

This is too horrifying to contemplate. Shock

Exactly, I would need the two matching. Laid flat there will be a gap in the middle. The only way I could see it working would be with a huge throw on the top covering both. It seems more work to make the bed, esp in warmer weather, when you wouldn't need a throw, and just lighter duvets. At the moment we sort of keep one folded on the bottom.

I think it is either comfort or aesthetics. I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to the bed looking nice! I'm not sure my OTT will let me go through with it.

Dh just needs to be mindful of his movements. I have started pulling the duvet more on to my side before we get in, then tucking the top sheet in, only on my side; this does help.
When we had a superking on a king you could sort of indent it still in the middle of you, as there was plenty of duvet. This worked well.
No wonder dh tells me I'm fussy! 🫢

A friend tripped over on a large duvet used on a smaller bed. Very bad elbow injury. Put me off the idea of larger duvet

Unrelated38 · 30/01/2025 10:37

We have a king size duvet on a superking bed. Got a bigger bed because it's cramped in the morning with the kids but didn't want to replace the bedding. We're cuddley though and don't sleep at opposite ends of the bed.

BarnacleBeasley · 30/01/2025 10:42

We do two duvets on a superking bed. When we make the bed, we fold them in half neatly and then put a big bedspread over the top of the whole thing, so it doesn't look messy.

pinkwaffles · 30/01/2025 10:43

Have always done this - completely necessary if there are two of you!

Nannyfannybanny · 30/01/2025 10:46

We have had a king sized duvet on a double bed for about 12 years, because we have dogs, and you loose the duvet. I've got arthritis in my hands,2 left wrist injuries, left handed,so very difficult and painful to change covers weekly,so last year, I went for what is called "coverless duvet", it's a misnomer of course, because it has a built in cover. I used a top sheet as well as the bottom, which is changed weekly along with the pillowcases. It's king size and almost reaches the floor.

ProperSleep · 30/01/2025 10:58

Now - the coverless duvet is a thing I simply cannot get my head around. How do you find it to sleep under, @Nannyfannybanny?

Presumably they have to be lightweight to enable a frequent and quick laundry turnaround? So you couldn’t have a 15 tog equivalent wool coverless quilt?

The trip hazard potential with a larger duvet is something I’m very conscious of. Every single time I walk around my bed I have in mind the names of famous people who’ve died ‘after a fall’ …

NosyJosie · 30/01/2025 11:06

I celebrated my divorce from an allergic to everything man by treating myself to a 13 tog goose down duvet. It’s always the perfect temperature all year round and washes like a dream.

PS - didn’t divorce him because he was allergic. Just a dickhead.

JC03745 · 30/01/2025 11:16

Is there a duvet size larger than a super king? We have a new bed on order, but other than 2 duvets, is there anything larger I can use?

For those asking about a messy looking bed with 2 duvets- WHO is looking in your bedroom every day???

ProperSleep · 30/01/2025 11:23

It’s not really a question of other people looking. Grin It’s more that the bed has to be an oasis of perfect order and harmony - the one sure thing in an uncertain world. I would be really discombobulated to the depths of my soul if there were two mismatched duvets side by side.

(An artful conglomeration of top sheet, duvet, extra duvet, quilt in different but aesthetically sympathetic colours / prints is fine … )

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · 30/01/2025 11:24

100000% worth it! We have a super king duvet on a king bed, means I don't have to fight the dog for the duvet (much)

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 30/01/2025 11:29

Yes. We recently traded down to a king from a super king, and use the same bedding, except the sheets. It's no different.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 30/01/2025 11:30

It's a must have for me

😂me! It has to look nice for me. We have a superking bed, and use a superking duvet. The next size up is called emperor, difficult to get, and costs a fortune. Plus I don't fancy changing an emperor sized duvet cover, I'm small, and it is tough enough with a superking!
