Neighbour using radio to harass us

I'm going to preface this with that I know he is doing it to annoy us, the context is that we got cats this year and he hates them so much he shot at them with his shot gun. Police were involved and he hasn't shot his gun again (cats have stayed inside mostly and one occasionally goes out at night)

Since I reported him to the police he has put his radio on 8am-7pm every day and varying different levels. This doesn't sound that bad but I can hear it all through the house as he's put the speaker on the brick fireplace.

We live in a very quiet hamlet and you would expect peace and quiet here, it's just so upsetting. I thought it would be a lovely place to live and it's been awful.

I've reported to environmental health and I'm currently doing a diary, police spoke to him about harassment the other day and no change in the noise.

I'm sick to death of it, I was looking at other houses but the children don't want to move again, this was supposed to be our final move.

I actually hate him so much and it's really ridiculous, I know he's a massive misogynist and had bullied the lady next door to me. He has a history. I am going to ask the police again about how much the can do as they have somewhat accepted he is harassing me by doing this, I just feel helpless.

I am going to get someone in to soundproof the kitchen but as it's very bassey I'm not sure it will solve the issue.
Not sure why I'm typing this is just making me so stressed the incident with gun was last June so it's been going on so long.

Is this meant to satirise modern popular songwriting and music production techniques? It's awful.

She was 13 years old at the time; the project was financed by her mother who paid to have the song written and the video produced, basically a self-attempt at thrusting her into stardom by posting it on YouTube and hoping for a big break

PP suggested Morrissey - I think 'Heaven knows I'm miserable now' would be apposite.

Update !

Hi everyone I thought I would do a little update so people could see what the process has been for me dealing with environmental health. When I wrote the last post. I was just filling in the noise diaries and once I finished doing that for two weeks and had a phone call with an officer that they assigned to me. That went really badly and the woman was talking to me about her father who opened the back door when he was playing opera and annoyed his neighbours, I explained it wasn't a comparable situation and this guy had tried to shoot my cat and intimidate us. I actually made a complaint about her and was given another officer . She has been absolutely brilliant totally understood and has been v helpful it has still taken since end of Jan to do all the recordings and he has been given two advisory warnings but it looks like next week he will be issued an ASBO, this will really help as the firearms division will get this information.

It’s a slow process but once the ASBO is in place he can be fined and it is a criminal act to breach the terms of the order. I’m on the way to getting somewhere with it and I feel like someone is finally helping me.

Thanks for the update. This sounds really positive.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 14/03/2025 18:10

Thanks ! It does, it has been very stressful as they don't give anything away when they are assessing the nuisance so you're doing all this recording thinking is it worth it.

I know you shouldn’t have to make any adjustments because of a man like him and you shouldn’t have to tolerate any constant disturbance. But once you’ve soundproofed your kitchen and only register the muffled bass, you will probably stop being aware of it. (I never hear the traffic here unless I listen for it).

Hopefully he won’t know that you’ve soundproofed and will then be impotently playing his radio all day like the flaccid prick he is

Mum5net · 15/03/2025 10:49

Why am I not surprised your first case officer was hopeless? I’m sorry you had to complain again. Excellent though you appear to be making progress and the ASBO might be issued. On the anniversary week of the Dunblane shootings it makes you still realise that these loners and nut jobs are out there and reporting is the right thing to do.

Sillysaussicon · 15/03/2025 20:19

Wow, good on you for getting an outcome. It's so difficult to get any reaction with stuff like this sometimes. I hope things improve!

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 16/03/2025 09:27

Thank you for the support, I am waiting to get the ASBO in place and then I'm going to contact the police again about the gun issue as both of them have a gun license and I want to know if they can have an ASBO and hold a gun license

A quick google suggested that he needs a custodial sentence for it to impact. It also says licence renewals are every five years. Wishing you well, OP. You are protecting everyone with your course of action.
