Neighbour using radio to harass us

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 26/01/2025 19:41

I'm going to preface this with that I know he is doing it to annoy us, the context is that we got cats this year and he hates them so much he shot at them with his shot gun. Police were involved and he hasn't shot his gun again (cats have stayed inside mostly and one occasionally goes out at night)

Since I reported him to the police he has put his radio on 8am-7pm every day and varying different levels. This doesn't sound that bad but I can hear it all through the house as he's put the speaker on the brick fireplace.

We live in a very quiet hamlet and you would expect peace and quiet here, it's just so upsetting. I thought it would be a lovely place to live and it's been awful.

I've reported to environmental health and I'm currently doing a diary, police spoke to him about harassment the other day and no change in the noise.

I'm sick to death of it, I was looking at other houses but the children don't want to move again, this was supposed to be our final move.

I actually hate him so much and it's really ridiculous, I know he's a massive misogynist and had bullied the lady next door to me. He has a history. I am going to ask the police again about how much the can do as they have somewhat accepted he is harassing me by doing this, I just feel helpless.

I am going to get someone in to soundproof the kitchen but as it's very bassey I'm not sure it will solve the issue.
Not sure why I'm typing this is just making me so stressed the incident with gun was last June so it's been going on so long.

He would not be allowed to keep his shotgun OP, had he been using it to try and kill your cat. There are very strict rules about gun ownership.

What an unhelpful post. What makes you believe that police enforce laws perfectly?

Pedallleur · 26/01/2025 20:58

Sadly if you escalate things it will just make it worse. He will get bored eventually. I presume reasoned discourse hasn't worked. Guessing he is single as well.

That's a whole different conversation, but I'm not sure how you think your post is helpful.

Hey yes it was definitely a shotgun and I've talked to Firearms about him, they were very helpful and told me to report everything to 101, which is why I've reported the harassment.

He didn't hit the cat and lied to the police, and also his mate about what gun it was. So unless he does it again, they're just going to keep an eye on him through me reporting anything.

How could he lie about the gun. If you reported him to the police for firing a shotgun at your cat they would have asked to see his shotgun licence and they would have a record on their computer of the guns he owns.

GauntJudy · 26/01/2025 21:19

Sounds awful. I had a different type of noise complaint (industrial noise) and found that copying my local councillor in on the email to the council env health team helped move things along quicker.

NewBrightonEel · 26/01/2025 21:22

It will be warmer soon - you'll be able to have barbecues all the time - really smelly ones 😉

BaronessBomburst · 26/01/2025 21:24

I would like to recommend Du Hast by Rammstein.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 26/01/2025 21:33

Thanks guys I feel better with your support and suggestions Smile

When I say he lied about the gun he said he had been using a pellet gun firing at rats. It was this he lied about to the police and his friend.

I know what a shotgun sounds like I grew up in a place much like where we live but he doesn't know that.

As there is no evidence ie dead cat then it's my word against his.

I have an ongoing complaint against the police for how they deal with this initial incident so when I'm dead they can look back and see how they can improve. The officer who dealt with it was off for 6 months after so the complaint is only just being heard.

the children don't want to move again,

I play in a brass band and we need more children to learn brass instruments because we aren't getting enough young players to keep our bands going. We need drummers as well. Perhaps your children would be interesting in learning these needed instruments? They could practice a lot in a room on the party wall.

YourHappyJadeEagle · 26/01/2025 21:42

Try your MP, you are very concerned about the lie to police over the shotgun/rifle. You’re worried he might have a weapon in his house, you and ither neighbours might be at risk… lay it on thick.

FallenRaingel · 26/01/2025 21:44

Rammstein Sonne to add to the play list. Not the heaviness but counting in German on loop will help.

Every member of your household needs to take up an instrument. Beginner violinists are a joy. Bagpipes equally so but you need to skill to make the noise first.

rainythursdayontheavenue · 26/01/2025 21:47

Don't retaliate. This isn't normal noise nuisance, this is living next door to the village fruitloop. Go through the proper channels, as hard as it is.

Our NDN's were retired and we had years of misery off them for one reason and another. We let fireworks off the day the For Sale sign went up Grin

Tangelablue · 26/01/2025 21:48

I'm loving all the rammstein suggestions. I would like to suggest rage against the machine if you're going to make a Spotify play list. You should also think about learning to play the bagpipes and get some violins for the children.
Don't let him win op, he should be the one who needs to move away.

JohnofWessex · 26/01/2025 21:51

Does he own his house or is he a tenant?

Ditto you

Either you can take it up with his landlords or can yours help?

Yes, I think if you do something back he will retaliate. You also won’t have grounds for a complaint.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 26/01/2025 22:10

Joking aside, please don't retaliate. Don't give him grounds to complain and don't kick the hornet's nest with someone who has a shotgun.

ThoseDarnCrows · 26/01/2025 22:11

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 26/01/2025 20:50

Honestly if nothing else works I am doing this

To be honest OP, they made me ill. I felt sick every time I went home, knowing that I'd hear their music as soon as I pulled up in the drive, it was all I could think about. I felt that I had nothing to lose.

I imagine you are feeling the same way.

But yes to the Rammstein ! Your neighbour deserves it for shooting at your cat, how bloody dare he!! It gets into the head, reverberates around the skull creating a tidal wave of an ear worm that can last for hours after. I imagine it would really upset his radio 4 twitterings.

Ophy83 · 26/01/2025 22:12

I would instruct a solicitor to write a letter before action telling him that if the nuisance/harassment doesn't stop you will be asking the court to make an injunction

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 26/01/2025 22:22

Get some tinkly windchimes!!

I have just been researching this !

@ThoseDarnCrows

Yeah you're totally right, just feeling very deflated today and really upset about it all.

However! All your posts have cheered me up massively. It's such a common problem with noise I'm trying to get the police to understand that the gun incident just makes it so much worse. He's a nasty bastard. Unfortunately there is a lot of gun ownership where I live and he hasn't done anything else to warrant investigation.

OP posts:
IggyAce · 26/01/2025 22:42

Sounds awful, do you have a ring door bell or cctv? I’d you don’t I’d consider having it fitted, it would mean you may capture evidence if the harassment continues.

ThoseDarnCrows · 26/01/2025 20:46

You need to play some Rammstein - LOUD! Make the floors and walls shake.

Years ago I had a family move in next door to me. Every single one of them had a stereo, so that was 6 stereos in the house. They each thought nothing of playing theirs at the same time as the others, from Elvis, to Jim Reeves to Madonna.

It never stopped. Morning, noon and most of the night. They would eventually fall asleep around 2.30 - 3,00am and silence ensued until around 7am when it would all start again.

It. Was. Insane! no amount of asking nicely or environmental health visits made any difference.

So, on went the Rammstein, at 3am , full volume against the walls. When the mother came to see me with the audacity to complain, I told her that unless they packed it in and behaved in a civilised and neighbourly manner, that this is what they would get, every night.

They stopped.

Good choice! I luvs a bit (a lot) of Rammstein!

Deathraystare · 27/01/2025 07:54

To be honest bagpipes would put me off!

Deathraystare · 27/01/2025 07:54

I think Halfisch by Rammstein would be good or Links - real stompy numbers.
