Neighbour using radio to harass us

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 26/01/2025 19:41

I'm going to preface this with that I know he is doing it to annoy us, the context is that we got cats this year and he hates them so much he shot at them with his shot gun. Police were involved and he hasn't shot his gun again (cats have stayed inside mostly and one occasionally goes out at night)

Since I reported him to the police he has put his radio on 8am-7pm every day and varying different levels. This doesn't sound that bad but I can hear it all through the house as he's put the speaker on the brick fireplace.

We live in a very quiet hamlet and you would expect peace and quiet here, it's just so upsetting. I thought it would be a lovely place to live and it's been awful.

I've reported to environmental health and I'm currently doing a diary, police spoke to him about harassment the other day and no change in the noise.

I'm sick to death of it, I was looking at other houses but the children don't want to move again, this was supposed to be our final move.

I actually hate him so much and it's really ridiculous, I know he's a massive misogynist and had bullied the lady next door to me. He has a history. I am going to ask the police again about how much the can do as they have somewhat accepted he is harassing me by doing this, I just feel helpless.

I am going to get someone in to soundproof the kitchen but as it's very bassey I'm not sure it will solve the issue.
Not sure why I'm typing this is just making me so stressed the incident with gun was last June so it's been going on so long.

DM had this once when she was young and she and my dad rented. She started singing and dancing to it and it stopped…

Inform the council, they’ll fit a box that will monitor the volume level and then speak to him if the volume exceeds, if he doesn’t stop he will start to get fixed penalty notices (if your council does this). It’s a noise nuisance.

ElderLemon · 27/01/2025 08:28

Just move you only have one life

Pigsinblankets13 · 27/01/2025 08:33

Appreciate its not ideal, but could you put the same radio on when you're at home so the noise is possibly less offensive? As a temporary measure? Just a suggestion...would drive me insane, sympathies!

TishHope · 27/01/2025 08:36

I am a past victim of a noisy, vile neighbour and I remember all too well the rage and mental stress it gave me. I can absolutely relate to the PP who said it made her ill. I am sorry to say, but the only thing that worked for me was to move.

How old is your neighbour? Just wondering if it's worth waiting for the inevitable.

MoneySpell · 27/01/2025 09:00

Ugh, people are awful.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 27/01/2025 10:32

Thanks for all the support and suggestions, I spoke to environmental health and they reassured me that the monitoring can go on for extended periods of time. I also have them the back story so the officer can understand what is going on, hopefully they can shame him to stop.

To everyone who suggested moving, I love literally love to but we can't afford anything and I'm actually not sure we could get the same mortgage. If this goes on and on perhaps we could rent. That might be a possibility, I will definitely be renting my house to a person with a ton of cats and loads of noisy kids Smile

@Bigpaintinglittlepainting
They should also be the type who rev their car/bike all the time, mow the lawn, leaf shred and smoke copious amounts of skunk!

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 27/01/2025 12:20

Oooh 16 polish builders smoking weed outside his back door Wink he would love that

rainbowstardrops · 27/01/2025 12:35

Firstly, what a prick he is!!!
I assume he's single? Who else would want to put up with his pettiness?

Mittens67 · 27/01/2025 12:53

Huge sympathy to you. I have my own neighbour issues so feel your pain.
I agree that taking any sort of revenge which could then be used against you is counter productive, however tempting.
I frequently cheer myself up by making imaginary playlists I would like to have on speaker at full volume.
The police often don’t appreciate the enormous negative effect of living next door to somebody who has no normal boundaries.
I can certainly see why those suffering sometimes feel forced to find their own solution. If I had a pound for every time people have told me Well I would just …
Unfortunately for me I am a very law abiding rule follower and I think my neighbour exploits that but I am not sinking to their level.

Find the worst music you can find opera, celine, smashing pumpkins or grunge torture music etc put it on loudly and go out

Edited

I mean, if someone played Smashing Pumpkins and grunge all day long, I'd be delighted!

Easipeelerie · 27/01/2025 12:59

In case he actually likes Rammstein, I’d play Gregorian chants and the most twee English folk music you can find.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 27/01/2025 13:02

Oh he definitely exploits that's we are super woke snowflakes, a couple of arty types. Dh is a lovely diplomatic man so he definitely thinks we are pathetic.

We are pretty steely determined people though !!

So this is also weird ! He lives with his step daughter who is in her forties, we thought they were a couple at first but they have separate bedrooms (I have actually been in their house couple years ago, when their DGrandparent had an illness and I had to go check on her)

I think he likes Capital radio 📻

I think playing his own howling and barking dogs back at him would piss him off 😂 he calls them his fur babies and wouldn't appreciate highlighting that he leaves them a lot on their own

I recommend Nick Knowles' various musical offerings if you're going to go down that route, but it probably counts as cruel and unusual punishment, so tread carefully.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 27/01/2025 13:22

Yeah looks super cringey, probably a crime in itself

I'd be extremely wary of doing anything like blasting music to escalate the situation. He's already shown he's willing to use deadly force and thr last thing you want is him at your door with a gun.

Yeah in all seriousness, I don't think blasting music back is a good idea.

have you tried just ignoring him and not letting him show you it bothers you, while quietly collecting evidence against him?

If he's not getting a rise out of you, he might get bored and move on.

How’s your relationship with the step-daughter?

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 27/01/2025 13:40

We haven't shown anything at all to him, just reported him, I tried at the beginning to play my radio at a low level and then louder so I could hear it but ultimately I was listening to both, so now I play nothing.

Don't worry guys I'm not going to do any of the crazy suggestions, but it's really helped me read all of them and also tho use who have experienced it, it makes me feel less alone.

His step daughter is probably my age and never speaks to me, he used to chat to me and she would run off. She's very introverted but I think she's also very hard faced. She gave me the stink eye after they got the environmental health letter.

They both looked like sulky teenagers and I have to admit I had a bit of a laugh inside. Ffs what a pair of doofuses.

He wears a beanie like right on the top of his head and his high vis gear like he's still at work. I wear prairie dresses and play guitar, no wonder he hates me 😂

Perhaps some Schönberg and Stockhausen to vary it a little?

caramac04 · 27/01/2025 13:54

Unfortunately I don’t think retaliation will work and most likely will escalate matters. He sounds unstable and like he will have to win whatever it takes.
I think your soundproofing is the way forward. Do not let him know he scares or upsets you, that will only feed the beast.
TBH I’m fed up of neighbourhood cats but only a nutcase would hurt a cat just being a cat.

Get a trampoline and send the kids out after 7am and after 3 till late. Do not oil the springs. He should soon negotiate. Even better train the dog to jump on it too

Again this is a man who has already shows he's not afraid to fire a gun at a living creature. I'm not sure that winding him up more is the best idea.
