Neighbour using radio to harass us

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 26/01/2025 19:41

I'm going to preface this with that I know he is doing it to annoy us, the context is that we got cats this year and he hates them so much he shot at them with his shot gun. Police were involved and he hasn't shot his gun again (cats have stayed inside mostly and one occasionally goes out at night)

Since I reported him to the police he has put his radio on 8am-7pm every day and varying different levels. This doesn't sound that bad but I can hear it all through the house as he's put the speaker on the brick fireplace.

We live in a very quiet hamlet and you would expect peace and quiet here, it's just so upsetting. I thought it would be a lovely place to live and it's been awful.

I've reported to environmental health and I'm currently doing a diary, police spoke to him about harassment the other day and no change in the noise.

I'm sick to death of it, I was looking at other houses but the children don't want to move again, this was supposed to be our final move.

I actually hate him so much and it's really ridiculous, I know he's a massive misogynist and had bullied the lady next door to me. He has a history. I am going to ask the police again about how much the can do as they have somewhat accepted he is harassing me by doing this, I just feel helpless.

I am going to get someone in to soundproof the kitchen but as it's very bassey I'm not sure it will solve the issue.
Not sure why I'm typing this is just making me so stressed the incident with gun was last June so it's been going on so long.

To be honest, if you can afford it I would think about soundproofing. Then he can fuck about to his hearts content and you need never know

Sillysaussicon · 27/01/2025 17:23

Look into a letter of cease and desist, DIY it or get a solicitors to write it up. If you need to you can follow through with court proceedings. Keep logging with the police, include you vulnerabilities if any, e.g. gender, age, mental health, disability.

Sillysaussicon · 27/01/2025 17:24

As others have said, of you want to stay I'd look into sound proofing the party walls...

Surely discharging a firearm at a cat is an offence? This is not a person that should have a shotgun licence.

Yes, and a pretty scary action towards a house with animals and children! I'd be asking about his past, anything you can use that the police can investigate him via?

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 27/01/2025 16:55

Shotguns don't fire bullets. They fire shot, which is lots of little bits, or else slugs.

I agree 'bullets' is not correct but avoids confusion with garden slugs. There's at least one slug lodged in a tree, fence, or wall, or possibly in the garden turf if he used one.
The little pellets (shot) would also be all over his garden, depending on size. I'd say he used a slug because it would have been hard to miss a cat with shot (depending on conditions).
All shotgun ammo from smallest shot to largest slug comes encased in a cartridge that peels apart upon firing to release the metal projectile/s. The spent cartridge would have been evidence of him firing the shotgun, but he likely disposed of it.

It's alarming that the police were so lackadaisical about the report of a shotgun fired. Angry man + shotgun and ammunition equals a situation the police should have investigated to the fullest of their ability imo.

Yes Police normally take reports of a person seen firing a shotgun/firearm very seriously and would send armed response.

OP your neighbour sounds awful and I have no advice re resolving the loud music.

re the cats @mossylog im guessing you're a cat owner? I have a dog, and a fully enclosed garden. That doesn't stop cats climbing over the fence, shtting in the garden and my dog eating it. Then coming in, chewing on his toys and then there's cat shit everywhere. So, it is incredibly frustrating to have cats coming in to my garden. They never sht in their own gardens, always other peoples.

I do feel I should be able to let me dog out in our fully enclosed garden without the worry of him eating cat crap. It makes him ill and it's also a health hazard due to toxoplasmosis. I'm currently pregnant so even more of a worry.

it wouldn't be acceptable if I let my dog crap in people's front gardens and didn't clear it up, yet it's somehow ok re cats?

don't mean to hijack the post, but just trying to explain OP, How perhaps the cats are really causing a problem for him. His reaction is obviously completely out of proportion and unhinged.

I don't have cats — I actually have a dog who is quiet at all times except when barking at cats. (She makes more mess of the lawn than any cat could.) I just accept that we have a culture of outdoor cats in this country.

I agree with @BettyBardMacDonald that cats are much safer as indoor cats, and they do harm wildlife.

My view on it is it's like fireworks (which bring delight but are dangerous and frighten animals). Outdoor cats are something we should probably as a society move away from but as it stands they're a fact of life in the UK and nothing to get mad about.

DrNo007 · 27/01/2025 18:16

Just to add, these cases hardly ever have to go to court as the noisy neighbour capitulates before that but it helps 100% knowing the law and the right wording to put in your emails/letters to council and/or neighbours. Sanctum Consultants helped me with this.

Asvoria · 27/01/2025 18:21

Look into using infrasound to get him into line. You can't hear it and the effects cause a stress response and he won't know why it's happening.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 27/01/2025 18:24

Lots of these points I agree with I'll try to address some stuff

  • I have tried to be as good cat neighbour as possible, after his complaint (many angry WhatsApps) I only let one cat out every three or four days at night and made sure she was using her litter box.
  • I have a complaint against the police about how this was initially dealt with and that is going slow as the office seems to permanently be off . I initially thought they underacted.
  • The firearms division advised to report any issues with his behaviour to 101 as it gets reported to them and then they will judge if he can own a firearm. They said I will not be informed and will never be given any information re this.
  • The police advised that after environmental health go in if he contravenes any agreement he can have an ASBO then he definitely won't have a gun anymore

Cradle of Filth...

Op should consider dressing like the band as well. That should freak him out

I mean, if someone played Smashing Pumpkins and grunge all day long, I'd be delighted!

Yep!!!

If it was country music I would hate it!!!

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 30/01/2025 13:14

Can you get a decibel recorder/monitor to record the sound and how loud it is and then report that? Honestly, I'd be tempted to move, whilst I agree with the whole "don't let him bully you out" he clearly is an awful neighbour, hates you and your pets and isn't likely to ever move..... So your best bet is to either;
Make peace somehow
Report everything until it's not worth him trying to annoy you (seems unlikely if he's bored and a tw×t)
Leave
Also, not sure I'd you'd have to declare the disputes as part of selling the house, at a certain point you do need to let potential buyers know there's an issue so take that into account if you ever do think about moving as it might put some people off

Does anyone remember this 'song' from 2011, with the inciteful lyrics and deep meaning? Aim this on repeat and full blast at your adjoining wall and I guarantee he'll be begging you for mercy by the end of the day!

Hey I love the Smashing pumpkins Wink

I'd go for continuous cheesy Christmas Music myself. Borrow a five disc player and put five separate Christmas CDs on it. Turn the speakers to his wall and the volume up to maximum. That's what I did only it was heavy metal against my 60s Beatles. It worked

wizzywig · 30/01/2025 13:43

I lived next door to a parish councilor. Jesus. Awful nitpicking busy body

There is no such thing as soundproofing. There are sometimes things you can do to attenuate sound transmission, but in a domestic house they are likely to be expensive and take up a lot of space, and they are always least effective at low frequencies.

MikeRafone · 30/01/2025 14:03

I would have a company out to install cameras around the house, obviously very hidden cameras and so you can view on your phone.

it will be money well spent

LardyCakeLover · 30/01/2025 14:17

Look through his window and see what make/model of radio he us using. Buy a universal remote control, program remote control, stand outside his window and turn radio off.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 26/01/2025 20:45

Hey yes it was definitely a shotgun and I've talked to Firearms about him, they were very helpful and told me to report everything to 101, which is why I've reported the harassment.

He didn't hit the cat and lied to the police, and also his mate about what gun it was. So unless he does it again, they're just going to keep an eye on him through me reporting anything.

Bloody he'll that is grounds for arrest and to search his home. Police man !!!

Is this meant to satirise modern popular songwriting and music production techniques? It's awful.
