Why do some people think it's perfectly reasonable to be so rude to retail staff?

Pancakeparlour · 26/01/2025 14:38

My DD is 16. After months of looking for work, she was lucky to get a part time job at a well known retail store a few months ago (hardly any jobs available for 16 year olds in our area). It is not the highest of pay, just £6.40 ph but it gives her a little bit of money whilst she studies at college full time.

However, she really does not like the job. She finds the work ok and gets on really well with colleagues but it's the customers, some are so nasty for no real reason. Some are down right creepy.

A few recent examples of what she has to endure:-

On several occasions now she has had grown men (some old guys as well) ask her out whilst she's served them at the till, another cornered her whilst she was stacking shelves wanting her to go over to the far end of the store with her (apparently he wanted help looking for shoe polish) and when she pointed to where it was but said she couldn't leave her current work (she said this because she instantly found him creepy) he became angry and wanted to know why she was working such a shit job, why she wasn't at uni and that she obviously had zero ambitions in life/was going nowhere, he was constantly calling her by her name (they have to wear name tags which I personally disagree with for this very reason). Luckily a colleague witnessed this and called her over to customer services to get her away from the situation. When he left the store he shouted goodbye to her across the shop floor (again, calling her by her name).

A few weeks ago she had a woman come back into the store shouting at DD because the £1 box of eggs had a 10% sticker on and DD hadn't seen it so had failed to give the discount. She was demanding she gave her the discount and wanted to know why she had been so stupid as to miss it off (it was DD first week).

She has messaged me today, on her break, really upset saying a woman has screamed at her today firstly demanding to know why the queue was so long and then when dd totalled up the woman's goods she said "that'll be £90", the woman then refused to pay until DD said please, which obviously DD did and so she agreed to pay (ironically when DD asked if she wanted a paper receipt the woman just snapped yesterday, no please from her!). She then said she thought everyone who worked in the store were all thoroughly rude and that she worked in customer services and is never that rude at work, Mmmmm!?

The actual incident hasn't upset DD too much but what has is the fact this woman has automatically written an online review stating my DD's name and really running her down.

She's so upset. It's her first job, she earns peanuts. She is doing her best. Thankfully, she does have lots of nice customers too and some bring in their dogs (store allows pets in) so she has a little cuddle with those which makes her day a bit more bearable but it's these horrible, nasty customers which are really putting her off the job.

I know it's character building. I worked in retail in my younger days and know that some people can be as rude as fuck but why do they have to be such arsehole? Are their lives so tragic and sad that they get their kicks by belittling young people just starting out in the working world. Are they so old and hardened by the world that they can't remember what it was like being young and starting out in life?

Anyhow if, on the very odd chance that last customer is reading this......I very much hope your next poo is an extra large pine cone!

In my personal experience the question is why do some retail staff think it acceptable to be so poor at doing their job?
Obviously there will be rude customers, society in general seems to be losing manners and social skills but many retail staff I have encountered seem completely disinterested in helping customers at all and as in other areas of customer (dis) service incompetence is widely tolerated.
There are only a handful of companies and shops left these days where I know I can rely on a decent standard of service. Anywhere else is a complete lottery.

Maybe it’s YEARS of putting up with sexual harassment, violence, witnessing theft, general rudeness, put downs. Yes its a job, but when day in and day out you put up with absolutely shitty behaviour, it means you don’t want to slap on a fake smile and pretend everything is wonderful.

Was in a large clothes store today , and a women was giving a young girl a hard time over a discounted item . The difference was 50p.

I don't agree with name badges on staffs uniform I think it's a real safeguarding issue especially for young women.

Sorry your DD has been treated like this.💐

I have worked retail and yes people are awful. Worst ones was when I worked in a pub restaurant. Sunday lunch. Was rammed and I had a huge waiting list. Some women basically told me to move people who were eating so she could get a table. Mind blown.

Not in retail/hospitality but a woman wanted me to find out who had parked in the BlueBadge spaces without a badge . ( Don't know if she needed it or just felt like an avenger) to get them to move .
I told her there were 3 floors ( Health Centre ) she wanted me to start knocking on the doors .

"I cannot do that " for obvious reasons , someone in the middle of a private consultation "You can ask the reception to put it on the tannoy"

Was my polite answer .
My brain was screaming "Fuck right off Missus if you think I;m going to knock on 50+ doors " inside my head .

Good job they don’t try nursing then.
If nurses (I retired after decades in the NHS) behaved in such a way the public would be rightly outraged.
I bet that I could knock any woe is me anecdote from a retail worker into the shade a thousand times over but I have never used that as an excuse for how I treat my next patient.

Get off your cross, they need the wood

It's not a race to the bottom, nor is it a competition to see how hard everyone else has it

The kid is sixteen, FFS and getting abuse that fully grown adults would have a hard time dealing with

She's sixteen, being paid much less than any acceptable minimum wage and has been publicly shown up with a sodding online review, by a screeching nutter, who saw how young she is and verbally abused her.

Medical staff have to deal with mentally and physically ill people at their lowest, receive training and should have solid OH and union backing, retail staff shouldn't have to face anything like this

My comment was in general, if you read the quote history. Not specific.
But we can agree to disagree

Fatloss · 26/01/2025 20:21

It should be the managers supporting retail and all public facing staff, right up to head office. Aggressive customers should be banned. If staff must wear a name tag it should be an option to use an alias. That would have to be formal so till receipts also have that name. (“Your server today was John”).

Agree with everyone having to do a job that involves speaking to the public. It should be compulsory for managers that did not get promoted or come from the shop floor to spend a month at a store, as a waiter etc. in their own business. A couple of days just won’t make a difference.

litttlepurplecaravan · 26/01/2025 20:25

Honestly, some people are just complete and utter cunts. And that's on them.

Hope your daughter is ok and is able to rise above it if she enjoys the job and colleagues are nice.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/01/2025 20:51

When my DC were working in public facing roles , my advice to them ( which is my advice to me ) is

I only have to spend 30 minutes with you . You have to live with yourself
if I have an awkward or rude person to deal with .

Well, you must have higher expectations in life than me.

I don't look at these people and think they are poor at their job, I see mainly young people working long hours, on their feet all day for minimum or very low pay having to put up with a lot of crap from customer's expecting more than their job is worth?

My daughter says she always says hello to each customer who approaches her till, most say hello back but there are many others who totally blank her. That's pretty disheartening. I can't imagine being that rude.

What are you honestly expecting from people on £6.40 per hour? My DD worked Christmas eve, Boxing day, New year's eve and New year's day.
People were still rude even during these supposed festive and times of 'Good Cheer'.

wastingtimeonhere · 26/01/2025 21:32

Oh and don't forget the expectation that because you sell something, you are an expert...No, I don't know which beef is best for beef bourguignon...or no, I don't know which switch you need for your electrics...or which paint you need for your 16th century beams...or which this fabric/ colour goes with which in your home...get a chef/ sparky/ decorator/ designer.. If I knew, I'd earn more than working for NMW!

Deathraystare · 27/01/2025 08:10

I realy really sympathise with your daughter. I worked in retail for all of 6 months (a loooooong 6 months). I was supposed to get training all over the store but got stuck on menswear (yippee, not!). The men weren't predatory but were smug and showing off in front of their giggling girlfirends. Also the women coming in to complain about something that could not be resolved (usually no receipt) so their big bad husband would come in the weekend...)

Where I work now (Reception NHS) One guy out of the blue ridiculed my job and said I was just a jumped up civil servant. I was wondering what he was the CEO of......

Your daughter will look back at it one day and laugh (honest!).. I used to be very shy and not good at dealing with angry customers but now it is a lot different.

It is definitely bringing her out of her shell. She used to be quiet but not now and thankfully this experience does seem to be building up her confidence somewhat.

I work in retail

Yesterday,I did a 7 hour shift (with a 45 minute break)

I had

A group of teens swearing and throwing food (and as they left, one lobbed a chair)

A massive bloke scream in my face that he'd ordered orange juice, got orange juice but i should have known he wanted diet coke-and he then threw his orange juice at me

A bloke who flashed his tiny willy at me (just out of sight of the camera)

A woman snarling at me because she'd waited 'a full 20 minutes' (we do check-shed waited less than 3)

A family walked in and their youngest (aged about 4) walked up to me,pushed my dodgy knee and told me to 'fucking move, bitch'
Parents thought this was funny

Some bloke thought it funny to slap my arse as I was emptying the bin

And a really lovely family who told me I was doing a top job and my boss should be giving me a rise

That seems a normal shift to be fair

Retail has an awful reputation for a reason

@Pancakeparlour I was named in a Google Review and called next to useless and had gone AWOL. This guy had been told over and over his warranty had expired and wouldn't accept it, so he decided to blame me personally and insult me. Not once did he phone always emailed, so of course I went AWOL my DF was critically ill I was off work. Had he phoned HD would have been told I was away, told agai he had no warranty but instead enjoyed emailing abuse to me

Tara336 · 28/01/2025 00:17

I would add a middle aged woman called me a c##t for not being able to confirm an exact time for an appointment (was doing her a huge favour ) as between 11 and 12 wasn't good enough.

I've had a man describe his bandage fetishes

I've had a man go insane and threatened the police because our engineer stroked his dog, that resulted in me putting the phone down ax he screamed abuse at me he then lied that I'd been rude ( boss shares a office heard me ask the man to stop swearing) and continued ringing our office for half hour or so after we said we would t be sworn at we all sat there bemused while the phone was ri ging off the hook

Pancakeparlour · 28/01/2025 09:23

Tara336 Honestly, what the hell is wrong with some people?

And I hate that in this day and age anyone can write a scathing review about a business or individual.

My poor dd is really upset this woman has used her name in this online review and there is no way to reply to it. This woman started off saying that when she approached dd's checkout she was 'chatting up her boyfriend on the till next to hers'. She was in fact asking him how to check for something regarding the till. The woman then continues to run my dd down stating her name about 5 times. Funny how she failed to mention the fact that she was a grown woman who felt the need to not only belittle a 16 year old who has been in the job for a matter of weeks but then calls her a 'Little bitch' and a 'Hoe' ffs. She has made my daughter out to be such a shit worker.

OP posts:
Noshowlomo · 28/01/2025 11:38

@Pancakeparlour can you leave another review with her version of events or even pretend you were another customer saying you witnessed this and the woman’s behaviour was awful?

Tara336 · 28/01/2025 11:45

@Pancakeparlour people can write anything they want on Google doesn't even have to be true and there seems to be nothing that can be done. I didn't want my name on the Internet ie where I work etc but you can't even get them to take that down. When you read some of the reviews left its shocking I always think it makes the reviewers look worse than the company they are reviewing
