Tinned Soup

ChippySauce · 23/01/2025 12:49

Not feeling great and trying to fend off a cold I feel is brewing.
Just looked through the cupboards and found a can of Heinz minestrone so that will be lunch.
There's also one can of M&S Cream of Chicken, but I fancy something tomato based.
I think they're from an ocado order DH must've done 😄

Do you like tinned soup?
Any favourites?

Baxter's Cream of Tomato. I used to love the Lobster Bisque one but it costs so much these days.
Crosse and Blackwell Cream of Tomato is also very nice. Just had it for my lunch.

I love Heinz cream of tomato, just had it for lunch!

BurntBroccoli · 23/01/2025 14:13

Only ones I like are Sainsbury's own spicy lentil and a Four bean one. Don't like Heinz at all. Plus they are about £2 a tin now!

I love Heinz lentil soup, I wish I could recreate it.

I also like Heinz cream of mushroom.

You can if you search for a recipe, it's what I did & I ended up asking a couple of pals for their recipes and tweaked them til I got the right balance for us. I don't have the amounts of each ingredient as I've been making it so long now that I do it by eye depending on what size pan I'm using but it 's very simple, smoked bacon , onions, carrots, red lentils, chicken or veg stock, salt and black pepper. Sometimes I'll add leeks and curly kale if I have any. I chop and fry the bacon, then add chopped veg, stock , lentils and seasoning, bring to boil, turn down to simmer until veggies are soft around 20-25 mins . Sometimes we eat it as soon as it's ready & the veg is still chunky, it's so delicious. But I mostly make a huge batch, let it cool, blend and freeze in portions. My DH says this is better than canned which is a huge compliment from him as he's usually a Heinz purist

I rarely have tinned soup, but I often fancy tinned cream of tomato soup when I'm ill - even if I've had a bad sickness bug - if I can keep a bread stick for a hour or so, the soup will come out. Funnily enough I bought a can yesterday.

Hope you feel better soon.

I do like heinz lentil I make my own lentil but it doesn't quite hit the spot.

All the M&S ones are great and such good value ! I prefer the tomato and cream of chicken to Heinz and for 60p fantastic. Favourite at the moment is their chicken and chunky veg - that’s £1.10 but is like having a bowl of chicken stew it’s so substantial

OldTinHat · 23/01/2025 14:46

Asda tinned vegetable soup. I love it!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 23/01/2025 14:46

Baxters French Onion or Heinz cream of tomato are my go to, and it has to be Heinz tomato.

Rockfordpeach · 23/01/2025 14:47

I really love Asda's own oxtail soup, it's the only brand I like. I'm trying to reduce my UPF intake this year and made my first soup ever this year (I am not a confident cook). Carrot and sweet potato and it was bloody delicious

Adamante · 23/01/2025 14:48

Baxter's Lobster Bisque - needs a splash of double cream and some fresh ground black pepper though. It's very good for a tinned soup.

Cross and Blackwell Winter Veg is really nice, and comparatively good value. Really chunky.

TheLadyIsAVamp · 23/01/2025 15:20

I like the Asda Mexican style chicken and bean soup from their health menu range. Not a tin but love the packet Knorr chicken noodle when I'm poorly.

I tried the lobster bisque and had to throw it out.
I just couldn't stomach it.
Never had it fresh either mind. I was really expecting something fantastic and was bitterly disappointed.

Love a fresh lobster though

I find Heinz tomato heavy and overdone.

Morrisons cheapo tomato soup is a lot cheaper and a lot better.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 23/01/2025 15:28

Heinz mushroom soup for me!

BiancasSilverCoat · 23/01/2025 15:32

My mum used to give us Heinz tomato soup with chips in sometimes. Proper chips from her chip pan, with salt and vinegar on. I still have it every now and then when I need a comforting childhood food memory. With chippy chips though, as I don't have a chip pan.

veraswaistcoat · 23/01/2025 16:24

Heinz Tomato soup or Cream of chicken with buttered toast dipped in !

When we were kids we had heinz tomato soup with a big blob of buttery mash in the middle of the bowl for tea & we loved it. I find the soup way too sweet now

Thanks @Sunnyside4
I think it's going to be worse before it's better as my throat has progressively got more irritated as the day has gone on unfortunately 🤒
Guess I'd better stock up!

I wonder if it was a recipe in woman's weekly or similar? Potato based food and tomato soup put together.
