Pronouns at work/being gender critical at work etc

Leafstamp · 22/01/2025 18:57

If you are a woman and have your pronouns in your email signature at work, can I ask why?

If you haven't given it much thought, are you open to being persuaded that, albeit in a small way, this practice of declaring pronouns is contributing to a movement that harms women, children and LGB people?

Equally, if you are already clued up on this and consider yourself a sex realist/gender critical are you able to be open about this at work and challenge instances were gender identity ideology is being unduly promoted? Do you find that others agree with you?

I work in a small company where none of this goes on, so I am curious.

I was NHS. Something that amused me was noting who jumped on the bandwagon- then who quietly got off again as the fashion faded 🤭

Mr/Mrs/Ms/Miss covers what sex you are.

Pronouns indicate either coercion or swallowing the KoolAid.

Same in my organisation. I think people will look back on this period with red faces.

I guess that could work, but frankly I don't want to put that much effort into wording every email I send so i can avoid using pronouns.
Also, because I guess the point of this thread wasn't about how useful it is to have them, I don't have a problem sharing my own pronouns because I'm proud to be a woman and don't have any issue advertising that I am on to anyone I correspond with.
I also am happy to be inclusive and make it that little bit easier for anyone who wants to share pronouns but hasn't been comfortable to do so.
I don't really care if that makes some narrow minded people on this thread think I'm thick or stupid 🤷‍♀️ I don't exactly hold them in high esteem either ....

You're not being inclusive.

What you're actually doing is signalling to any woman who needs single sex spaces that you're not a safe person.

I'm not. How is being born with a vulva something to be proud of? It would be like being proud of being born with ears.

You aren't inclusive of autistic women like me.

Do you never write reports / messages or have discussions with others along the lines of “spoke to Sam in Legal about the Jones case and she informed me that it’s still ongoing”? It’s very clunky using names rather than pronouns in every case and some people seem very uptight about just using “they”…

"Spoke to Sam in Legal about the Jones case, who informed me that it's still ongoing"
"According to Sam in Legal, the Jones case is still ongoing"
"I spoke to Sam in Legal about the Jones case: it is still ongoing"
"Sam in Legal told me that the Jones case is still ongoing"

Just off the top of my head, four different versions, none of which mention Sam's sex or gender, nor use the sometimes confusing 'they'. The fact is, you are just curious to know whether Sam is male or female, but you actually have no professional reason why you need to know.

There are many reasons why people sre proud to be a woman

What's the relation of the autism here?

Cool.
Not sure how you've managed to connect the two statements. I didn't realise giving ones own lived experience isn't allowed.

ThePotholeHelpline · 23/01/2025 00:23

I really hate 'they'. It so bloody confusing in a conversation.
'They' is plural.

I definitely would not use 'they' at work even if asked - I draw the line!
Just plum for a sex, any will do if you must be awkward!

Its not confusing. That's just used by people who don't want to admit they're being ignorant.

It can get quite confusing.

"Zavi & Avi came over, they both like lemonade, but Zavi said they don't like pink lemonade." Who doesn't like pink lemonade? Is it just Zavi, or both of them?

That I can understand.

I just don't feel the vast majority genuinely don't understand, they just don't like it.

I struggle with lying. That includes lies like "your dress is lovely" when I think it isn't and "she" when someone is clearly male. By stating pronouns, you tell me that a) you might be someone male who I am going to struggle with lying about and b) you are likely to take exception if I use "he" or "they", no matter whether I intended to or not. This creates anxiety for me.

Oodiks · 24/01/2025 00:19

I used to write the minutes for Faculty meetings and used 'they' whenever indicating a person had commented on something as there was no need to indicate the sex of the person speaking.
In normal conversation it can get confusing and it's tiring to keep up. I manage pretty well in conversation with my daughter about her they/them friends but sometimes have to stop and clarify whether the 'they' in a particular instance is a person or people.

I'm struggling to parse your last sentence: too many instances of "don't".

Most people don't take exception to a genuine mistake.

Re the lying, just because other people use pronouns doesn't mean they're not being inclusive to you. It might not be something you feel able to do, but that doesn't mean we should eradicate them completely. I don't imagine you'd want people going around telling people their dress is awful when they usually wouldn't, just because you struggle with this

Yoonimum · 24/01/2025 00:36

mynameiscalypso · 22/01/2025 19:48

I don't because we don't have control over our email signatures. I don't care if other people do. Like @Scutterbug says, it can be helpful especially if you've not met the person before and can't tell from their name.

You don't need pronouns for this. In a professional context I tend to sign off with my first name but write my sex based title and name in full underneath if it is a first exchange.
People who are not trans using pronouns are virtue signalling or have been bullied into it. Trans people who do it are trying to make you ignore the evidence of your eyes. Every thing about gender ideology is misogynistic and homophobic. See: https://fairplayforwomen.com/pronouns/

Pronouns are Rohypnol • Fair Play For Women

There’s a lot of chat around about pronouns right now. Specifically, ‘preferred’ pronouns. By which is usually meant, the pronouns a person would prefer.

Did you read what I wrote?

When you put pronouns in your email signature:

  1. You tell me that you are someone who thinks it's OK to lie about what sex you are.
  2. You tell me that you are someone who expects me to play along with that lie.
  3. You tell me that, like Luna Spain or the "it's ma'am" guy, you are likely to be unforgiving of mistakes, let alone dissent.

Nope. I'm struggling to figure out how to apply what might be a double negative or might be a triple negative.

I was taught at school to avoid writing double negatives for that exact reason. Shame that your school failed you.

You seem a bit obsessed with me and my posts and determined to bait me. Its quite sad really. I hope you can heal from whatever it is that makes you want to insult people, their upbringing, their school life for no reason at all. I'm sure your wee fingers will be tap tapping away for another response but I won't be replying.

It's you that called me "ignorant" when I struggled with your poor grammar. I'm just returning the favour.

You turned up on this thread to bait the lot of us, so you can hardly talk.
