I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner

For those who weren't born or don't remember and those that do, it's an incredible forty years since this song reached Number 1 in the UK. A bit of a classic really. I'm not at all keen on power ballads by and large but IWTKWLI really hits home.

I also like Feel Like Makin' Love by Bad Company and All I Need by Beth Nielsen Chapman.

Any other power ballad favourites?

Probably already mentioned but Power of Love, Jennifer Rush. I really don't like power ballads but it's impossible not to (attempt to) sing along to that one.

She does sing it really well but I prefer Frankie Goes To Hollywood's version. Sends shivers down my spine!

Wind beneath my wings - Bette Midler

Two different songs with the same title - released about a year apart! Both good.

How do you define a power ballad? Some people are just listing their favourite 80s pop songs.

creamsnugjumper · 22/01/2025 00:01

I might make a Spotify with all of these on it and share the link.. mumsnet bangers playlist 🤣

A power ballad is whatever you want it to be. No rules!

I'd forgotten about All Out Of Love by Air Supply. That last note held on for so long is quite a feat, even though it's pitched a little under a semitone too high!

I hereby proclaim The Mr Blobby song to be a power ballad.

Bet you're missing those rules now!

Love hurts and scars, love wounds and mars /Any heart not tough or strong enough/To take a lot of pain/Take a lot of pain/Love is like a cloud/Holds a lot of rain...etc 1960 Everley Brothers, Nazareth and loads since..
