I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner

For those who weren't born or don't remember and those that do, it's an incredible forty years since this song reached Number 1 in the UK. A bit of a classic really. I'm not at all keen on power ballads by and large but IWTKWLI really hits home.

I also like Feel Like Makin' Love by Bad Company and All I Need by Beth Nielsen Chapman.

Any other power ballad favourites?

Now that you mention Scott Walker, the Walker Brothers produced a lot of material that sounded power-ballady, even if it wasn't called that at the time, eg, Make It Easy On Yourself, The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore and possibly most of all, Stay With Me Baby. I'm not sure how else you'd describe the combination of lush instrumentals, those emotional lyrics and the way his voice soars.

I was an enormous fan of the Walker Brothers in the 60s! I bought all their albums, and managed to see them perform in the then Hammersmith Odeon in 1965, when they were the support act to Roy Orbison along with Lulu.

Oh, happy days!

Aww I remember making a tape of this for my dad, taping it off the radio for his birthday, either this or the song by The cars…I was 7

I lost my virginity to that song!! In a room above a pub.
Pure class me… 🤣

“Love lift us up where we belong” by Joe Cocker/Jennifer Warner for me. On repeat. Though in retrospect, I don’t think it played too many times…

And don't forget ELO! so many good songs, including Turn to Stone, Telephone Line, Can't Get it Out of my Head.

I hear they are doing a farewell tour, which I would love to see, but in UK only, and I'm in Canada.

puffylovett · 21/01/2025 22:57

Maybe not a power ballad but Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac is my secret belter

TheTecknician · 21/01/2025 20:43

A power ballad is whatever you want it to be. No rules!

I'd forgotten about All Out Of Love by Air Supply. That last note held on for so long is quite a feat, even though it's pitched a little under a semitone too high!

Thank you for giving me an earworm OP - I remember all the words to that song!
