I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner

For those who weren't born or don't remember and those that do, it's an incredible forty years since this song reached Number 1 in the UK. A bit of a classic really. I'm not at all keen on power ballads by and large but IWTKWLI really hits home.

I also like Feel Like Makin' Love by Bad Company and All I Need by Beth Nielsen Chapman.

Any other power ballad favourites?

This thread is so much fun! It's a bit like a time machine😍

Here are some of my favourites:

Roxy Music/Brian Ferry : More than this. Avalon
George Michael & Aretha Franklin: I knew you were waiting
Simply Red: Holding back the years. If you don't know me by now.
George Michael: Jesus to a child.

My new playlist is going to be very long...😉

I suppose From A Distance is a sort-of power ballad. Cliff or Bette? You choose!

Or Nanci Griffith! Late Night Grande Hotel is superb too.

Is some clever soul pulling an actual playlist together....or am I going to spend my entire weekend creating one? Great tunes mentioned
One love by Bono and MaryJ Blige is one which automatically has me turning the radio up.

Diane Warren, the America songwriter songwriter, is responsible for a fair few PBs:

How Do I Live ? by LeAnn Rimes
Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton
I Don't Want To Miss A Thing by Aerosmith
If I Could Turn Back Time by Cher
Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion

She must be absolutely minted!

Mumsnet - if you’re listening - surely this list is worthy of a collaboration with Spotify?

Report the thread, or any post. That will get the attention of MNHQ. I won't do so myself as I'd be blowing my own trumpet!

A prototype PB, if you will. You Don't Have To Say You Love Me by Dusty Springfield. Sung with real gusto and feeling.

I dunno. I think there's got to be some previously undiscovered honesty combined with sadness plus guitar and great vocals.
House of the Rising sun would be a good pre rock ballad

Mad About You - Sting. It has strong vocals, an honest vulnerability about it and a sense of epiphany; the sudden realisation of a painful truth is that of the biblical King David, who knows he's wrapped up in his feelings for a woman (Bathsheba) and helpless because of it.
