Daale Vince had planning permission approved, he wasn't given a lucrative government contract.

I regard myself as very lucky that I live somewhere that has a weekly street market and also has a local shop/PO that does fresh fruit and veg at very good prices.
(Yesterday - large punnet of strawberries, large punnet of raspberries, large punnet of blueberries, 3 avocados and 3 peppers for £5.)
I realise I'm lucky and a bit atypical in this respect but I still take exception to the opening statement
The Food Foundation found that 1,000 calories of healthy food such as fruit and veg costs £8.80, compared to £4.30 for the equivalent amount of less healthy food, such as ready meals and processed meats.
A few examples - Sainsbury do carrots at 69p a kilo (410 cal/kg) and potatoes at £1.35 for 2kg (700 cal/kg)
So less than £2 for 1000 calories of carrots, about a quid for 1000 calories of spuds.
I believe there are huge problems with geavily processed foods and ready meals (upf is one of my pet hates) - but I think the problem is more related to education and the perceived convenience of ready meals rather than just being down to cost.

Do you live on a housing estate grumpy?

It is wort focusing on the fact that the full report said how much of a person's disposable income would be made up of food shopping if they aimed to eat 'healthily/'Those disparities are truly shocking.

MN has a blind spot on these kinds of inequalities and tends to look for cultural rather than material reasons.

Not aimed at you dunc. Just piggybacking!

bombastix · 29/01/2025 15:32

Let them eat cake

Elodie09 · 29/01/2025 15:34

@derxa You don't seem to like the UK very much.
I think we live in a great country and I wish the media would be more pro UK , it is where they are making some of their money and wages after all.

LilyMumsnet · 29/01/2025 15:37

Hi all,

Just a quick reminder that discussing users who aren’t part of this thread isn’t really on - it’s unlikely to keep things civil.

If this continues, we’ll need to remove the thread, so please stay on-topic. Thanks!

DuncinToffee · 29/01/2025 15:42

I must say this has confused me. I said I don’t have much faith in most politicians. That doesn’t equate to not loving this country. I would never live anywhere else.

bombastix · 29/01/2025 15:44

Mmm.

Some free speechers complained!

What exactly are the complaints made? We don't mention posters by name or discuss them.

We do discuss other threads, is that not allowed anymore?

96% of GDP as national debt and high interest rates means we cannot afford volatility - we need debt service cost to come down and be predictable. Growth and positive outlook translating to investment will hopefully achieve that. Once you have positive outlook and growth - then you can invest in the NHS etc - in the mean time, you have to find efficiencies. Political stability comes first, above all else.

PandoraSox · 29/01/2025 15:49

@LilyMumsnet yes, please can you clarify which talk guidelines we have broken and what we can and can't discuss on this thread. We don't want it pulled so it is only fair that we are all clear about this.

Elodie09 · 29/01/2025 15:54

What is going on?
The message from the moderator Lily came just after my nice polite exchange with Derxa, I never swore or anything.
Not sure what to think !

@LilyMumsnet another who would like some clarification please.

Piggywaspushed · 29/01/2025 15:55

Surely one is allowed to say that one is concerned by the number of far right threads popping up?

RafaistheKingofClay · 29/01/2025 15:56

I was going to come and say I was hiding in here because it’s all a bit mad out there again. But I might get the thread deleted if I do that.Confused

Piggywaspushed · 29/01/2025 15:57

Also, on a point of order, this thread is notably civil with occasional outbreaks of squabbling.

Agreed - that would be helpful.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 29/01/2025 15:59

No - @Piggywaspushed I don't live on a housing estate - which I suspect you assume is the answer anyway. My childhood upbringing however was very different to my current situation (outside loo, no bathroom etc.) but tbh I don't think that's pertinent either.
The point I was making is that the BBC coverage picked on one headline from the report (crap food is cheaper than healthy food in terms of calorie provision) and I was pointing out that I don't entirely agree. Having read the full report (thanks @DuncinToffee ) I still don't entirely agree, and having a section in the report about how much more expensive non-dairy 'milks' are than dairy seemed peak MN to me.
However - overall I think this was a well produced and hard hitting report with some very good points.
And I fully understand that poverty is a societal problem, not simply due to people making bad decisions. So if your comment that MN has a blind spot on these kinds of inequalities and tends to look for cultural rather than material reasons. was aimed at me - then I can confirm that that isn't my assumption.

PandoraSox · 29/01/2025 16:00

None of our posts from recent days have been deleted, have they @LilyMumsnet ? So I would really like to know what we have done wrong, otherwise how can we avoid doing it in future?

pointythings · 29/01/2025 16:04

Seconded - mentioning the number of very right wing threads on here at the moment is surely not against guidelines? This is very much not a TAAT. Clarification would be helpful.

Araminta1003 · 29/01/2025 16:05

Just on food, we import a ton of fruits and veg. So when the pound goes down relatively speaking, the cost goes up. So surely the solution is to find more and more efficiencies in producing more fruit and veg in the UK by using clever technologies in greenhouses and the types of green boxes used in the Netherlands. I would love for there to be investment in alternative meat more and more, veggie products that actually taste good and are healthier and more sustainable. Green technologies can all work with that and it is definitely a market that will grow. Together with the wellbeing and vitamin and healthy science market.

PMQs

Badenoch just praised Trump and Argentinia's president Milei ( the chainsaw guy) for their approach towards regulations

She also got told off by the speaker Mr Speaker for false accusations and unparliamentary language.

IMV this is code for supporting Musk and by extension Trump.
Cut state departments and de-regulate everything. Lead by dividing the voters. Shares some similarities with Truss really.

Worth also noting -

More than half of Argentina's 46 million people are now living in poverty, new figures indicate, in a blow to right-wing President Javier Milei's efforts to turn around the country's beleaguered economy.

The poverty figure for the first six months of this year was 52.9%, up from 41.7% in the second half of 2023, said the country's Indec statistics agency.

Since taking office in December, Milei has slashed subsidies for transport, fuel and energy and sacked thousands of civil servants, as he seeks to bring down inflation and reduce government expenditure.
Argentina's annual inflation rate in August remained one of the highest in the world at more than 230%.

No nit at all, it was a comment about wider Middle class dominated MN, so probably not an allowed comment now??

But , and you did acknowledge it, saying where you live and your ease of access to wonderful, fresh food doesn't represent the reality for nearly everyone living in or near poverty.

It's a topic I'm kind of passionate about! The shite they sell in most Costcutters, and the orices they charge. The fact that a Sainsburys Local is more pricy than an out of town Sainsburys supermarket etc etc. Lots of research and detail goes into such reports and it is interesting how people often then say they don't agree when they haven't conducted the research. Sorry if I'm being rather forthright.
I could go on, but won't!

There was a lovely story on my local news about a delightful, ethical farmer who had brought in a lovely shop, chocolatier and bakery, reducing food miles, increasing local employment, bringing back the idea of community shopping and producing high quality products. But he did concede it was expensive and his answer was less but more delicious meat with more veg. It was delightful but so so Middle Class. It really is a luxury position .

Peace and Love!

SerendipityJane · 29/01/2025 16:12

The latest drive to cut US headcount is only going to push the most able out and leave the less able behind. Concentrating the inefficiencies.
