Supermarket Sushi - which does it best

I was spoilt and previously had say access to a large supermarket that did yo! Sushi. I don't now and had some from Boots that wasn't all that great tbh. Which supermarket does the best sushi - bonus points if it's usually available in their small city centre stores

I like the Aldi sushi. I go for the duck/chicken ones. Good price on them too.

PullTheBricksDown · 19/01/2025 19:24

M&S

Waitrose from their sushi making counter

Waitrose from their sushi making counter

Oooh I wonder if all stores have these

Definitely Waitrose and definitely not MandS (can’t cook rice) or Tesco (bland), Sainsbury’s is ok.

TribulationPeriwinkle · 19/01/2025 19:35

Definitely Sushi Daily at Waitrose.

WingingItMam48 · 19/01/2025 19:37

Our Asda has a Panku counter, freshly made, pretty good. Around £6 per pack.

This. Completely different to ‘supermarket sushi’ which is usually grim IMO.

I find the panku sushi a bit grim. Loads of mayo and crispy fried onions

BnmLK · 19/01/2025 19:39

Waitrose or next best is Sainsburys

Lovethatforyouhun · 19/01/2025 19:40

Any shop that has a separate sushi counter. Ive seen them in Waitrose, Sainsburys and asda.

Orangefield · 19/01/2025 19:41

My teen loves M&S sushi, with Asda Panku counter a close second. Morrisons also has a counter in some stores and theirs is good too. We have a YoSushi counter in our local big Tesco but don't like their sushi - the rice is sticky, thick and bland.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 19/01/2025 19:53

Sainsburys has a separate sushi counter as well. (Well my one does!)

I hate those crispy onions on everything

Definitely Sushi Daily at Waitrose.

This is the best of the bunch and equivalent to amediocre sushi restaurant imo.

Boots is inedible and shouldn't be allowed to be described as sushi

amoreoamicizia · 19/01/2025 19:58

I can't comment on non-veggie options but most of the veggie ones are a weird mishmash of vegetables and completely inauthentic*. I quite like the Taiko hosomaki and inari tofu pouches n a box together from Waitrose.

*Edit actually inauthentic might not bother me so much, they just look weird and unappetising.

godmum56 · 19/01/2025 19:59

I like Tanpopo from ocado but be careful, their "spicy" ones are extreme

I was actually quite shocked by the Boots one. It was terrible.

Sainsbury’s stopped doing wasabi and pickled finger in theirs so it’s crap now.

NewmummyJ · 19/01/2025 20:08

Another vote for the Waitrose counter sushi, hoping to treat myself to some tomorrow, yum!

Foison · 19/01/2025 20:19

Waitrose. Hands down the best supermarket sushi. Priced accordingly.

A weird second to Asda for me. My local one has a counter - it's a bit hit and miss.

Probably a good thing they stopped doing the pickled finger.
