Men wearing shorts.

Even when it was snowing I saw quite a few men wearing shorts. I often wonder why on a freezing day they reckon that they should wear shorts.

OP posts:

Why does it matter ?

Are they making you wear shorts ?
Are they wearing shorts that verge on the obscene ?
Is there some legality I am unaware of ?
Or are they just wearing what they want in a way that harms no one else ?

Am I the only one who likes a sturdy set of legs in shorts?

Definitely not just you.

My boyfriend has a very physical outside job and the physique to go with it and lives in shorts, snow or no snow. It does things to me if I'm honest 😅

And to answer you OP, it's partly because he can't bear to be too warm and seems to run hot and partly due to sensory issues and not being able to deal with trousers.

ShinyHatStand · 18/01/2025 11:56

I've just asked my son if he wears shorts because he is attention seeking, lazy, obese or not very bright.
He says it's because he has no temperature receptors in his legs 😁

I'm just glad my son is now old enough that I don't get snotty mums blaming me for his short wearing

biscuitsandbooks · 18/01/2025 11:59

Some people just don't feel the cold 🤷‍♀️

If you don't like it, move to a colder country, OP. Once it gets low enough even the most dedicated natural shorts guys can't handle it. So they get used to wearing trousers from a young age and don't grow into shorts men.

People drive absolutely everywhere - weather-appropriate clothing isn't needed for the journey between heated car/building

True but in general the men I see wearing shorts year round are doing an outside job- postman, builder, roofer, gardener etc. or where they’re frequently out of the vehicle ( delivery drivers) so I think it’s more that some people don’t feel the cold. I have a friend who runs in shorts year round and she said that so long as her body and hands/ head are warm it doesn’t matter what she wears on her legs and she just doesn’t like the clinging of leggings.

Simonjt · 18/01/2025 12:20

I wear shorts most of the time, I’m not lazy, obese etc, I do wear trousers to work. I’m having to wear longer shorts for running at the minute as I’ve got a bit of thigh chafe from being sweaty, having more of my legs covered is really uncomfortable.

I think we need a "Men in shorts appreciation" Thread 😁

Ds is 17yo wears shorts all the time. Barring stage costumes, he has worn trousers about 3 times in the last 5 years, and I'm including to school.
He wore trousers for work experience because they said he had to
We tried wearing trousers playing football on the vain hope that I would say that as he wasn't muddy he didn't need a shower (fat chance!)
He wore them once when it snowed, but concluded he'd rather be cold and the next day (also snowy) was back to shorts.

He just finds it far more comfortable.
He doesn't wear a coat either. I haven't bought him a coat since he grew out of the one I bought him for secondary school which went to the charity shop with the labels still attached.

My dad always wears short regardless of the weather. He’s 78. He worked for years as an international hgv driver in some extremely cold places. -40 weather etc. he only puts the heating on at home to stop damp. We are all freezing and he’s just not. He never feels the cold.

TeeBee · 18/01/2025 12:46

I can't imagine why anybody would be slightly bothered what someone else chooses to put on their own body. Who gives a shit? Get on with your own life and let them get on with theirs.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 18/01/2025 12:46

Shorts wearing man here!

In my case it's mostly DPs fault. I'm quite a warm person whereas she's a freezer so always wants the heating up high in order to feel comfortable. As a result I'm generally in shorts and t-shirt round the house as that's the only way I'm at a comfortable temperature.

If I'm going to be outside for a decent amount of time, I'll change into trousers, but if I'm just popping out to do the bins, or hopping in the car and then straight in the supermarket, then I'll stick to shorts, as I'm not outside long enough for my legs to get chilly.

This winter is proving to be an exception, DP is barrelling into peri menopause and the hot flushes are in full swing, so she's got the thermostat a good bit lower. As a result I'm in jeans more often than shorts.

Candlesandmatches · 18/01/2025 12:50

It’s better than men wearing tight leggings. That’s an affront to the eyes.

mitogoshigg · 18/01/2025 12:56

Year round shorts are definitely a style choice here, long cargo shorts, hiking boots, fleece and sailing jacket seems to dominate in the 50-80 age group

CoodleMoodle · 18/01/2025 12:58

We know it's really chilly when one of the men on our street isn't in his shorts. If we see him one of us usually says, "Must be cold this morning, John's got trousers on!" Grin

Or they just wear what they want because it's their personal choice 😳

Plenty of women wear short dresses and skirts in cold weather. I wouldn't assume they were attention seeking or lacking in intelligence.

I think I would!

MaxJLHardy · 18/01/2025 13:06

Have worn shorts all winter, quite hairy legs, don't lose much heat from them. Like the cold. Wearing a t shirt would be weird.

You haven't said why though?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 18/01/2025 13:14

DH prefers shorts but draws the line at the dead of winter (wuss), although he changes into shorts as soon as he gets home.

There is a local character who's involved in all sorts and does lots for charity etc etc. Very visible. He wears shorts all year round and is absolutely attention-seeking.

Riapia · 18/01/2025 13:18

Whether male or female no one above the age of 40 should be seen wearing shorts in public.

Why not?

Do you have a weird idea of what legs should/shouldn't look like?
