This is like those replies to specific questions on Amazon product pages that say something like "I don't know sorry, I bought it as a gift".

I know they're well-meant, and just a case of the answerer not understanding how it works, but they are hilarious sometimes!

Not every comment is meant specifically for you, random reader of the internet!

Edited

I had a friend like this. Whatever I posted, she'd comment. Usually to tell me she has no idea what I'm talking about / never heard of it

Something that annoys me (and this is said now and again on Mumsnet,) is when a poster is explaining that they have large breasts, and they say they are 'large of nork!' See also 'large of breast!' I have seen this on a particular thread this past few days, and it's soooooo annoying. Angry

NO-ONE, I mean NO-ONE says 'large of nork' in real life. Absolutely fucking ridiculous! Hmm

madaboutpurple · 18/01/2025 18:19

There was a post earlier today and the Op said she had the flu but had a zoom interview for a job. Straight away she got a lot of hassle from other posters telling how terrible she was as she would spread her germs. She had mentioned it was by zoom. Then people asked her did she actually have flu or just a cold. Well people do tend to know how ill they are. I felt sorry for the lady.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/01/2025 18:28

Mine (and huge apologies if it's been mentioned but my blood pressure was rising so high reading all these posts that I had to skip...) is people who come on and say 'we're having a girl and we'd like to call her...Hermione, or Xanthe or Hecuba' or some other classical Greek name from mythology. Loads of posters chime in to say that xxxxx is a made up name/from Harry Potter/ Game of Thrones/a stupid name.

Sigh. It's like nobody reads any more. But I do rather enjoy it when someone else comes in with 'It's a name from ancient Greek, I think you'll find it's mentioned in classic Greek mythology,' and everyone goes quiet.

There are loads of things said on MN that aren't said in RL. I've said nork in RL though.
Does anyone actually say "Did you mean to be so rude?" in RL?

There is a woman on our local FB page and she appears to know/have an opinion on anything and everything. And writes a small essay as an answer to literally any query on schools/uni/local businesses/jobs for teens etc etc

Crinkle77 · 19/01/2025 00:26

When someone is in financial dire straits and people say 'can't you get a loan or a credit card.' I mean durr don't you think if they could have done that they already would have. They probably have poor credit history so go down can't those routes. That's why they desperately need cash.

MN need to disable the quote Op option
It's so annoying!!

I am guilty of this, because there's no 'reply' button, so I press 'quote', in order to read the post as I compose a reply, then forget to click 'clear quote' when I post.

pikkumyy77 · 19/01/2025 02:27

I live the quote feature. An it harm none, let your will be done. It harms no one.It enables us to see what, specifically, we are responding to.

It's not the quote feature itself, it's quoting to show you are replying to the original post which is really pointless and fills up limited screen space.

Everyone in the thread is replying to the OP unless they indicate otherwise. Imagine if everyone did it - every post would be scrolled past. May as well just fill up the thread with bots!

Posting "." rather than clicking "watch thread" is also irritating. Again, imagine if everyone did it.

Where the poster has not bothered to read the OPs updates that contain key information so they keep repeating useless advice or questions!!

This! The classic l remember was people answering “Could I be pregnant?” posts over 12 months old😀.

Or old baby names threads, where little Olivia-Mae is now about 7!

TigerRag · 19/01/2025 09:42

People not checking the date of a thread. I remember googling something and a MN thread was suggested which I believe was from 2007. It told me at the bottom of the thread it's old and I should probably start my own

FiatMultiplaWhopper · 19/01/2025 09:47

When someone is wondering why their house isn’t selling and 15 people post ‘get some naice pots and bright flowers outside the front’ like that will raise the price by 50k on its own.

also using ‘boob’ in a breast feeding context like ‘offered it boob before bed’ urghhh

TheYeaSayer · 19/01/2025 09:53

On the Baby Names topic:
”DH and I love the name Flipper for our new baby, but not sure how others will feel. What’s your opinion?”

Lots of posters: It’s bloody awful, your child will be bullied.

Another poster: OMG, you lot are so rude! Why are you dissing the name OP loves? OP just ignore them, your baby, your choice.

Er, OP literally asked for opinions. That’s the whole point of the board!

TheYeaSayer · 19/01/2025 09:54

Also on the Baby Names board, posters suggesting “Balonz” and thinking they’re being funny.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 19/01/2025 10:30

@madaboutpurple I agree, I read that too and felt sorry for her.

Cue the other thing I hate on MN that was demonstrated on that post, the person who is clearly dying to jump on and have a go at the OP and be relentless in their posting, without answering their question. You can usually count down to that smug type of poster appearing on the first page.

On the post you are referring to, didn’t take long for such person to jump on and smugly declare the OP couldn’t possibly have flu as she’d not be able to get out of bed, and it must just be a cold, because when they had flu they were in bed for 10 years… despite the OP having a 39.5 temp and the fact not every single person reacts the same to every illness 🙄

CruCru · 19/01/2025 10:38

On most threads about sex - where something about sex with a particular partner isn’t the OP’s cup of tea, there will usually be a couple of posters who say something like:

”Well, I LOVE sex! I am a properly sexy lady and I like everything about sex! You should be more like me or your partner will leave you! For someone who likes lots of SEX!!!”

I heard that in Matt Berry's voice...

I assume these are the same people who post book reviews that say "haven't read it, bought as a present for my grandson - 5 stars"

These used to irritate me a lot, but then MIL finally got onto Amazon. I am her “IT person” so see a lot of her inbox. I don’t seem to get these but she relentlessly gets emailed by Amazon asking for reviews. I can easily see her thinking she HAS to click and do it. I keep meaning to see if it’s a setting on Amazon or her email that I need to change.

Yes, this is it I think. As I said, the useless answers to the questions on product pages are clearly made with good intentions by people who think they, personally, are being asked - presumably because Amazon emailed them.

The same can't be said for forums!

Cue visions of David Williams in a dress

Yeah I wonder why that is? Why is there no reply button? Confused

It's OK if it's just a small-ish post like yours I am quoting here, or like my answer to you here, but if it's 12 paragraphs, and 1200 words, and someone quotes it (especially when it's only 2 or 3 posts later,) it's infuriating!
