What do you eat for breakfast that’s not toast or cereal?

I have always eaten toast but I am finding it a bit stodgy some days especially if I have a sandwich for lunch and it’s just too much bread!

I don’t have cereal as I don’t like milk. I don’t like eggs and I don’t like berries and yogurt type things.

I am not as fussy as I sound! I am wondering what other people have and maybe it will give me some ideas.

I have no set thing, its different every day

-Leftovers from the night before
-My mum can't drink milk, and has always had apple or orange juice on cereal! Plain cereals, not added sugar ones though.
-Hash browns with avocado or cheese/tomato, cream cheese/smoked salmon on top
-Croissant with ham/cheese/tomato inside

My FIL has orange juice on cereal too!

Bio & Me granola with prunes, honey and kefir.

But tbh I miss the days of a coffee and a fag... I do.

SirChenjins · 17/01/2025 10:57

I had fruit oatcakes and a banana today. I also like overnight oats with fruit or fat free Greek yogurt with fruit and a sprinkling of low sugar granola.

I fast until lunch. It totally take the hassle out of having to make breakfast 😂

onwardandupwards · 17/01/2025 10:58

My adult ds loves rice pudding with a blob of jam or Nutella. Fruit salad or waffles with a scoop of vanilla ice cream

Halavonna · 17/01/2025 10:59

I use the 16/8 eating window, so brekkie is about 11.30. Usually porridge made on water in the microwave, with added wheat bran, chia and linseed (milled), + two tablespoons of flavoured protein powder and if the mix is too thick I loosen with soya milk. That takes about 5 minutes tops. It's my absolute favourite and I have it all year round.

If weather is hot though, I make a veg/fruit/protein powder smoothie with the milled seeds. It tastes great, but it doesn't seem to fill me up or satisfy my belly (!) like the porridge does.

I don't cook for breakfast. Too much faff for me!

Frowningprovidence · 17/01/2025 10:59

I eat omelette or rough oatcakes with tuna mayo on top. I also eat peppered mackerel with tomato or mushrooms.

Stir fried veg and lentils with tofu.

How do you stir fry lentils, or do you have a dahl type thing ready in the fridge that you add the stir fried veg and tofu to.

Just wondering how that works, as I love stir fried veg and tofu, and want to add more lentils to my diet. Thanks.

I will have a banana some days.

Yes I was thinking of a rice type thing.

Kedgeree

I'm following for ideas as my DD13 struggles with breakfast as she doesn't like cereal or toast

SereneCapybara · 17/01/2025 11:01

@SereneCapybara . It's just normal scrambled eggs and then shake in Tabasco - depends how fiery you like it! Also salt and black pepper. It's 😋

I'm having that for breakfast tomorrow!

PlopSofa · 17/01/2025 11:01

Not sure how old you are OP but late 40s going into 50s if you’re eating that amount of carbs for lunch and dinner, depending on your metabolism things could go south fast.

That middle ring becomes very hard to get rid of.

A high protein breakfast is a great way to start the day.

You could check out the Glucose Goddess who was one step away from type 2 diabetes even though naturally thin, if you want to.

I don’t follow her religiously by any means for food but she has some nice breakfast recipes that are high in protein. This has changed things for the better for me.

"Real" Greek yoghurt with some nuts or fruit. Really creamy and filling.

Or
Porridge pot with hot water

Protein shake

You need to listen to Sliced Bread on Radio 4 which was on yesterday, all about protein shakes, Wey powder, protein bars. It was interesting and doesn't say they're the devil's work but a much more nuanced assessment

I’m not much of a cook so the Merchant Gourmet brand has been amazing for helping me add in more lentils, beans and pulses.

Not what you were asking for but just wanted to post it in case it’s handy.

Natural yoghurt and banana

It is fast, reasonably healthy and different from my other meals.

If I need to add more substance, I add oats and spoon of marmalade to the yoghurt, but it takes a few minutes to blend.
Unfortunately, I don't tolerate milk in the morning, so can't use it to soak it faster. But the yoghurt works ok in the end.

MiddleAgedDread · 17/01/2025 11:08

FFS did no one read the bit about the OP not liking yogurt or eggs??
Do you eat eggs and milk if they're in things e.g. pancakes?
Also have a look at baked oats recipes which can be nice and healthier than ready made cereal bar / flapjack type things.

Girlintheframe · 17/01/2025 11:08

Overnight oats, addicted!

Eggs, avocado, tofu fried with smoked paprika, (veggie here)kimchi, pickled veg. Maybe a bit of cheese. Or leftovers, I had rice and Dahl with a fried egg yesterday

I would love to have this. What I actually had this morning was porridge made with half water half milk and salt, with a drizzle of golden syrup. ‘Twas very warming!

Ice Cream for breakfast! You would be my kids hero....

Stickthatupyourdojo · 17/01/2025 11:10

Kvarg protein yoghurt with a layer of low sugar lizi muesli on top. Started having it when I was pregnant with gestational diabetes and was avoiding too many carbs but have continued as it's actually easy, nice and filling. Plus the dog licks the pot afterwards so he's happy too.

PerambulationFrustration · 17/01/2025 11:12

Today I had a banana and some oatcakes with cheese.
Yesterday, I had bread thins with avocado and tomato. On the weekend, I had cream cheese on sourdough with mushrooms.
I hate eggs but everyone else in the family has egg wraps or eggs and toast or eggs with hash browns.
Sometimes we have porridge or baked porridge.

sixtiesbaby88 · 17/01/2025 11:14

I can eat anything at any time of the day. I often eat the night before's left overs which could be curry, casserole, stir fry or whatever. My favourite breakfast is kedgeree with mango chutney. I'm not a fan of sweet breakfast and although I like trad bacon and eggs etc, I'm trying to avoid processed food like ham and bacon. For the odd treat I buy naked bacon!

Epli · 17/01/2025 11:15

Eggs! Poached or scrambled, with avocado or salmon.

If not eggs then two slices of good bread with cottage cheese & radish or some hams, lettuce & tomato.

okydokethen · 17/01/2025 11:16

Greek yoghurt, fruit and granola
