Would you go to a wedding on your wedding anniversary?

If you were invited to a wedding on your own wedding anniversary would you go?

In this scenario it's not a 'big' anniversary
Your spouse isn't invited to the wedding
The wedding is not that of a close family member of friend

Would it be weird if you DID go?

I was all "yes, go" until I read that your DH wasn't invited. That puts a question mark on it for me.

elliejjtiny · 15/01/2025 19:20

I probably wouldn't go but that's more because dh and the dc aren't invited than because it was our anniversary.

Onelifeonly · 15/01/2025 19:20

Yes. We've had a lot of wedding anniversaries and even if I really wanted my own big celebration, I'd happily defer it by a few days.

Tbh if it was a wedding of someone I wasn't close enough to get a plus 1 I likely wouldn't want to bother, irregardless of the date.

ChimpiestoftheChimps · 15/01/2025 19:21

I'll be the outlier. I probably wouldn't go - our anniversary is important to both of us, if we were both invited I would go but if spouse wasn't, I wouldn't (and DH would be the same).

BarbaraHoward · 15/01/2025 19:21

Yeah I'd go. It wouldn't bother either of us.

ZenNudist · 15/01/2025 19:21

Of course! What an odd question.

Cyclebabble · 15/01/2025 19:27

Depends on what DH thinks. We tend to do something for each anniversary, but not necessarily on the exact day (might for example wait until the next weekend. So for us I do not think this would be a big issue, but thoughts will differ from couple to couple. I would discuss with DH before doing anything else.

ChaosAndCuddlesAndTeacups · 15/01/2025 19:29

If it fell any other day, would you go without second thought?

If yes then I'd still go and I'd make sure to mark/celebrate my own anniversary on another day close to it instead. 🫶

comedycentral · 15/01/2025 19:31

Yes 100% - I might combine with nice hotel stay and fancy brunch the next day to make the most of the anniversary too.

crumblingschools · 15/01/2025 19:33

Whose wedding? Is there a reason DH isn't invited, how far away?

crumblingschools · 15/01/2025 19:35

@comedycentral without your spouse? Can understand doing that as a couple, but a bit odd to celebrate your anniversary without your partner

Jk987 · 15/01/2025 19:36

WorriedRelative · 15/01/2025 19:08

Why wouldn't you?

This!

ListenDontJudge · 15/01/2025 19:37

I'd go to the day but not the evening.

Puddleclucks · 15/01/2025 19:38

So people seriously refuse to go to a wedding their husband isn't invited to? I can't imagine that...loads of my friends have got married and we've just had tables of women who went to uni together, worked together etc, who on earth would we need husbands there?

@Puddleclucks that's why it depends whose wedding it is and how far away? If it was old work colleague from years ago, miles away and didn't really know anyone else, then no I probably wouldn't go without DH (in fact possibly wouldn't go at all) If it was local and a good friend, and a group of people I knew going then yes I would go without DH, unless we already had something planned for our anniversary.

Oh, he'd love to wait in the hotel room with a bottle of fizz and some chocolates for our own after-party 🥳

We've been together for a long time, so a few hours' peace in a hotel room with some sport or a hot bath (we only have a shower at home) would be bliss for him. I'm happy to celebrate not on the day, too; sometimes it falls midweek, so we can save doing something special for the weekend.

InspectorGidget · 15/01/2025 19:44

It would be weird to say 'sorry I can't make it as it's our wedding anniversary'.

Unless you had a party planned already.

sprigatito · 15/01/2025 19:46

I would only expect to be invited without my DH by someone to whom I was very distantly connected, so no I wouldn't go on our anniversary. If a close friend or family member had the appalling manners to invite me without DH, I wouldn't be going, anniversary or not.

Needspaceforlego · 15/01/2025 19:46

I'd be more put off by my DH not being invited than the date tbh. I went to loads of weddings as a young single woman and always felt like a spare.

I'd find it weird your invited to celebrate someone else's relationship when they don't want to acknowledge yours.

crumblingschools · 15/01/2025 19:47

@InspectorGidget why? You can give any reason. If you had already planned something beforehand, I think it is fine to make your excuses. As has been said on many wedding threads it is an invite not a summons. You don't have to attend every wedding you are invited to.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 15/01/2025 19:47

Yes, why not, unless your DH especially wanted you to spend the day with him.

diddl · 15/01/2025 19:51

If I wanted to go I would & we would celebrate our anniversary another day, or meet up after the wedding if that worked.

stanleypops66 · 15/01/2025 20:00

Yes, I wouldn't even think twice about it. But we don't massively celebrate ours, maybe a meal out.
