Do you wash your (secondary school) kids uniform every day?

Just looking for normality check. I have boys so trousers and shirt. I used to wash regularly every day when they were little as they just get muddy all the time. That’s less the case now, but I still feel like I should have clean set every day.

Thanks. I appreciate these responses. Wasn’t sure if I was creating unnecessary work for myself and maybe everyone else was doing something different

Clean shirts daily. (And underwear and socks). Blazers as needed, ties at weekend and skirts/trousers they change midweek. (Occasionally the tie needs washing midweek, but I have a spare for that eventuality.

Currently doing an emergency PE kit wash as she fell over on the way home!
DD2s PE kit needs a wash after rugby practice, but that isn't on at the moment.

redskyatnight · 15/01/2025 16:47

Clean shirt every day.
Trousers/skirt once a week.
Blazers and ties once a half term.

They don't need washing if they are not dirty ...

No. I do a sniff test on polo. Cardi and trousers only washed if looks dirty or end of week.

sanitygirl · 15/01/2025 16:50

Trousers and jumper get washed once a week at the weekend. Shirts I leave to my son to decide but he is v scrupulous about personal hygiene so they don't really smell

ByMerryKoala · 15/01/2025 16:50

Yeah, fresh shirt and trousers each day.

Rosesgrowonyou · 15/01/2025 16:51

Depends how mucky they got. They certainly didn't have clean uniform every day.

Topsy44 · 15/01/2025 16:54

Clean shirt every day. DD has 3 jumpers so most days a clean jumper. Skirt once a week.

PE kit, dance and drama kit - always clean on but sometimes leggings for dance and drama will get a couple of wears.

DominoRules · 15/01/2025 16:55

Clean shirt everyday, trousers and jumper maybe every 3 days? Unless they get filthy playing football…… Can’t remember the last time I washed a tie!

Those who wash blazers weekly... is this because they are used as football goal posts? If not, do you clean your own jackets that frequently?

I'd wash a blazer each half term if it were looking grubby.

I wash my DC's blazers weekly because they wear them pretty much all day, every day (their school requires blazers to be worn at all times, except when there is special dispensation given during particularly hot weather) and they're polyester so they can get a bit sweaty.

But if I'm honest, it's mostly out of habit rather than need - I do a "school uniform wash" every Friday evening and everything gets chucked in, apart from the one woollen blazer. I don't think it adds to my carbon footprint much, because I'd still need to put a wash on for the other items of school uniform, regardless of whether I included the blazer or not.

Clean shirts every day, not trousers and certainly not blazers! Uniform is washed at the weekend all in one go, we have 28 shirts to wash each week 😱

Edited

Same here, other than the 28 shirts bit 😀

SereneCapybara · 15/01/2025 17:00

Mine had clean shirts, pants socks and in winter T-shirt vests every day. Trousers were changed twice a week unless they got muddy. Jumpers washed once a week unless they got grubby. Sports kit washed as soon as it got home.

SwaylerTwift · 15/01/2025 17:04

I have 2 washes on most days so yes everyday a freshly washed set however blazer is only washed termly and i dont bother shine their shows. Gets done maybe once or twice a year!they have reworn trousers and jumpers when there wasnt a cleaner one yes.

Severntrent · 15/01/2025 17:09

I've never washed their ties!! I wash the rest if it's dirty or smelly. Football in the park on the way home means trousers are more frequently washed than I'd like to!

Ellie1015 · 15/01/2025 17:13

Fresh shirt every day. Skirt and jumpers generally get worn twice then washed.

I think best to have fresh shirt every day as puberty and sweat can smell.

Rwdlan85 · 15/01/2025 17:24

Yes . Each DC have 5 polo shirts , 5 jumpers , 5 trousers - clean set everyday. Have 3 DC wash them all on the weekend ready for the next week.

PulchritudinousWoman · 15/01/2025 17:25

My DC always had clean shirt/trousers/skirts daily.

Blazers and ties washed on a quick wash weekly at the weekend then straight onto a hanger (polyester) and hung in utility room for a few hours. Learnt the hard way never to tumble dry blazers!

Jumpers under blazer in winter changed half way through the week.

Older DC had 3/4 sets of uniform and I’d wash midweek. Youngest has 5 sets+ as I can’t be doing with ironing shirts/trousers in the evening now!

PE kit washed after each use which is a pain when they have PE on consecutive days.

Friend is a teacher in DCs sec school and has said before she wishes other DC smell like mine! Not pleasant to have 30 hormonal teens crammed into a classroom in stale clothes who don’t shower every day either, in winter or summer.

RB68 · 15/01/2025 17:28

we were always clean shirts and underwear every day - couple of skirts or trousers a week and blazer when it was needed but generally sponge sometimes with vinegar if smelly (like a dry clean)but they were rarely smelly as taken off for sport playing etc and then had shirts and jumpers underneath

mondaytosunday · 15/01/2025 17:51

Fresh shirt/socks every day. Skirt/trousers once a week unless dirty. Blazers once every half term.
Sports kits after every wear.

BBQPete · 15/01/2025 17:56

No, of course not.
Pants, socks, and shirts clean each day.
The rest, when needed.

JMSA · 15/01/2025 17:59

God, no. One of mine has a kilt as her school skirt (Scottish private school Grin), and there's no danger I'm ironing all those pleats more than once fortnightly! It's made of wool and I really should get it dry-cleaned, but can't be arsed so just put it on a delicate wash.

MaMaJoJo3 · 15/01/2025 18:01

Definitely wash daily but a quick cool wash will suffice. The blazer can be washed weekly unless it looks or smells like it needs a wash. It is important that our children go to school feeling clean and with good hygiene standards-kids can be cruel and you don't want to invite the bullies to pick on your child.Teens sweat much more than younger kids. Make it easy on yourself and get non iron school shirts etc. My washer spins so well that the uniform is practically dry when it comes out the wash. A quick daily wash is only 10-20 mins and my kids appreciate a clean uniform daily-nothing worse than putting on stale clothes!

This reminds me of when I thought we would be judged if we didn’t iron the kids shirts so we (my husband also irons) ironed loads every Sunday. Then once at kids rugby training I was talking to a group of parents who all had kids in private school (mine are not) and they could not believe that we ironed kids shirts. We decided to give not ironing them a go and nothing bad happened. 5 years on and no kids have been bullied or judged about the lack of of ironed shirts!

I think sometimes as parents we can project feelings on to our kids about this stuff, when kids were brutal to one another but it’s just not a thing any of my 4 kids have experienced. I don’t know if that is how things are now or if it’s just different here as I live in a different part of the UK now.

BBQPete · 15/01/2025 18:43

The blazer can be washed weekly

Grin I don't think I've washed a blazer more than twice in my whole life.

None of my dc were ever bullied or picked on. None were ever "stale" . Grin

devastatedagain · 15/01/2025 18:44

Yes. Bath every night, clean clothes every morning.
