I paid £18.00 for my dd’s flu jab, she used to get it free as she has lupus why she no longer does I don’t know.

Alexandra2001 · 16/01/2025 08:50

Clubcard discount? i don't know.

Choosing a Tesco Pharmacy for your flu jab
We'll be offering the free NHS flu jab in our pharmacies in England from September 2024 for pregnant women, and from 3 October 2024 for all other eligible groups. If you’re not eligible for an NHS jab, our £16 flu jab service is available to anyone aged 12 years and over from September.

We need a robust opposition. It doesn’t have to be Conservative.

What isn't needed is two Reform parties.

Badenoch is a loser. Another poor choice by a party elite who knew exactly what her considerable flaws are and hid them. They got flattered. A bunch of old grandees. No fool like an old fool.

You will see more and more of this lazy, incoherent approach.

What had she actually achieved before becoming leader? A woman who has only ever known power? Who got elevated by the party hierarchy based not on political skill but her ability to grate.

That was the same reason as Truss got pushed up. She and Badenoch are more similar than might first appear. She's an unclubbable oddball.

Farage is going to eat the Tories.

Yes, that's possible. I got a free BP check too.

Notwithstanding, £16 is a good price and ,whilst it may exclude groups who live in or near poverty, I'd argue teachers and other public servants can afford that and there are plenty of refund schemes. I honestly don't know why a teacher wouldn't.

Notonthestairs · 16/01/2025 09:03

"Farage is going to eat the Tories."

Agreed. But L/D took 60-70 seats off the Conservatives in the last election. The party doesnt seem interested in these voters at all.

Exactly. And the more it appeases its right wing the more of those voters there will be. When you live with someone who’s voted Tory for 50 years and says they can’t do it any more, you know they’re in deep trouble.

Going to take a wild stab on the dark and predict that hollinrake is a landlord and is invested in no fault evictions not being banned.

Ah, now housing policy is an area I wish this government would be savage about. I don’t know how the repercussions of intervention would play out, but I hope BTLs and multiple property ownership generally are stamped on.

Landlords need to be put on a short leash.

For now, I will take the almost poetic spectacle of the right descending into infighting as my reward for 50 plus years of seeing the left do the same letting successive more extreme governments into power. We can't have enough right wing parties to confuse the knuckledraggers and keep Farage and his elk far from power.

I am a little sorry that "Vote Bruv" hasn't yet gained more traction. Maybe now Russell Brand has decided to be John the fucking Baptists to Andrew "Oh Christ !" Tate things will snowball.

Anyone seen the weird clips of Brand preaching. Apparently he seems to have found something new in the bible ? Although an unkind critic commented that as with baptising in the sea, it does look like homeopathic Christianity.

Landlords need to be put on a short leash.

Whether we like it or not, there is no real alternative yet to the private rented sector.

So putting LLs on a "Short Leash" will just lead to increased rents as LLs leave the sector, it will not assist tenants.

The Social housing has to be built or bought first but who will pay for that and where are the builders available to build???

Another Tory failure to invest in skills.

Labour's new renters bill doesn't stop no fault evictions, the LL can still force an eviction if he wishes to sell or move back in & who will enforce if the LL changes his mind and re lets for more money?

A friend of mine rents, she was evicted after 21 years, alternatives attracted 100s of viewings, she eventually got a place but now pays 80% more in rent, the social housing waiting list is about 15 to 20 years.....

Yet another Tory failure.

Mr Hollinrake’s register of interests also shows that he is a portfolio landlord, with additional income from five residential properties in York, as well as having shareholdings in lettings and estate agency services Habitats Online Ltd worth over 15 per cent of the company’s issued share capital.

Hasn't everyone seen the massive Daily Mail and Telegraph campaign demanding he stands down due to conflict of interest? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

And Kerry Beardnock???????

I think Badenoch has been pretty terrible at PMQs. I can only hope she improves. The Tory party can’t field a great deal of talent while it remains so shrunken.

Starmer has failed to answer anything (I don’t blame him for that - all PMs do it) but has proved incredibly petulant (which I do think should be criticised) and is very wooden. Everyone can see that. He’s quickly become a very unattractive PM.

As for the NHS, funding’s gone up in real terms under the Tories. I don’t know why the NHS is performing so badly, but it’s not for lack of money.

Even Labour says the NHS must change.

If you wanted to point to a definite Tory failure you should have picked the prisons. When Labour announced early release and a serious look at penal policy I posted on here that I supported that and that the previous government had let it get to a shocking state, despite some new prison building.

What bothers me most about Labour, as you probably know, is its claims to be more morally upright than others. That’s complete bullshit, as we’re seeing daily. They’ve misled the country.

I’ve said many times that I can respect arguments of political difference - essentially Labour’s instincts towards state control v Conservative instincts towards market control - but I reject the presentation of left-wing politics as being more ethical and honest, either in application of policy or in the conduct of Labour politicians.

Andrew Lansley. He took what was a well performing NHS and "reformed" it. The rewards of those reforms are still being reaped IMHO, even though some of them have been undone. I remember a colleague in the early day of the reforms calling them evil. I thought she was being OTT. I was wrong.

Araminta1003 · 16/01/2025 09:45

I agree that you cannot keep putting more regulation, taxes, green energy burden, no evictions on private landlords without at the same time, building a huge rental stock.
I am all for large companies building green housing and renting it out professionally. And former landlords should be encouraged to purchase shares in those companies/private equity if need be. If that isn’t happening, why?
Usually it will be because the returns on the former are better than the returns on the latter. To kickstart the latter, the state has to come up with something.
I would be happy to put some well performing housing stocks into my SIPP/ISA if they were properly backed and professional etc. However, there appears to be no plan to do things like that.

It isn’t just about growth though is it? Did it grow as expected, less than expected or more than expected? The whole issue is and always has been that the market has “expectations”, if they are not met, things get worse.

Houses cost an awful lot of money to build, land costs are spiraling as are labour & material costs.

For a private company to build these for social rent, at a good standard of construction and make a return, isn't possible.

Its better to build for sale in the open market or not build at all.

There’s plenty that could be said about the shortage in skilled building trades, but I really don’t think you can blame the Tories for that, or at least no more than New Labour.

I do accept that reform of the housing market will be difficult and will need time. But I was thinking of something much more radical to be honest. Along the lines of requiring landlords to be licensed, regulated heavily and unable to sell other than to the tenant or another regulated landlord. I can see a role for substantial discounts in price where tenants buy.

I’m very much in favour of private ownership, but the general rule should be one house per family.

It makes me twitch with anger when I read the term “accidental landlord” on here.

Spot on. The biggest waste of money on an act of self harm the NHS has ever seen.

Araminta1003 · 16/01/2025 10:09

@Rummly - people need to be mobile to be able to take up employment elsewhere. That is mostly why you get “accidental” landlords ie I have been offered an excellent job with better wages in another City and want to rent my house out whilst renting there.
Stamp duty has made mobility extra hard already, it stifles economic growth.

All growth has a limit. Chasing (and continuing to chase) "growth" is why we will never achieve it and why the planet is disintegrating beneath us.

50 years ago would have been an excellent time for the human race to stop and contemplate where permanent "growth" would lead and work out a strategy to maintain some sort of steady state. However that was probably a bit hard. Easier to let your grandkids sort it out.

Years ago, when Nigel Farage was still naive, he made a comment which I was intrigued by - mainly because of the tumbleweed it received. But it was (and still is) very very valid. He asked "Why do we need growth ?". Which was (and still is) actually a really insightful and worthy question. Admittedly he asked it as a precursor to the follow up point which was a variant of "do we need all these brown people ?" which may have affected it's reception. However I am still waiting for someone - anyone - to give a grown up answer.

How much of that mobility is good for the environment ?
