What retailer do you think will go bust next?

My money is on Poundstretcher. Went into my local one today. Shelves empty, looking old and dirty and prices aren’t really cheap for a discount retailer…

Is the Body Shop not gone?
It closed Irish stores a while ago.

Hard disagree.

  1. Some people shop in the Co-op because going elsewhere isn't an option
  2. Some of their food and wine ranges are excellent and can't be bought easily elsewhere
  3. A lot of people, myself included, support their ethics

You don't have to shop there. As you have already pointed out, you can easily shop elsewhere.

Wanting retail staff to lose their jobs is horrible.

Next. The pretence is beyond ridiculous.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear Asda go into liquidation.
Boots is very popular in my North Yorks city.

TopshopCropTop · 12/01/2025 18:42

PunnyRobin · 12/01/2025 18:43

the whole high-street model is outdated for global businesses

SlightlyJaded · 12/01/2025 18:43

Ones that deserve to disappear are

Next - boring shop with shit clothes made of shit quality in stupid sizing.

Boots: Miserable

WHSmith: Inflated prices and also miserable, but suspect they will be fine due to their travel monopoly.

I think we might lose Millets which seems to be stuck in a 1987 timewarp and doesn't seem interested in competing with places like Mountain Warehouse.

I worry about Currys because it must be hard to compete with AO and cheaper white good retailers, but I love that I can go and open freezer doors and see what things actually feel like before I buy. They need such massive retail units though.

Ah..I have just googled. They have been restructuring having been in administration and are planning on opening more shops. All the ones near me have gone.

Ours Monsoon never closed, it’s been here for years and years. A few years back Accessorize took a small area of the shop floor however now they share the shop floor 50/50.

TJ Hughes is another store that’s freezing cold, dimly lit and never seems busy.

Fat face.

Fat Face will disappear. Ozempic and Wegovy will be to blame.

They closed loads of shops recently, ours is still open but I don't think there is many left

gidsquame · 12/01/2025 18:44

I can’t understand how H&M shops stay open - there are 2 near me and both are massive & filled with shapeless creased beige polyester. The kids section is always a mess and they never have the sizes I need, despite having a fabulous range of kids clothes on their website.

Spaghettisour · 12/01/2025 18:44

My money is on:

Crew
White Stuff
Matalan
Morrisons

Maybe some of the higher end but less fashionable brands like Jigsaw, Phase 8, Lk Bennett.

Im surprised ASOS are still going.

Where I live Coop is the nearest supermarket for miles. M&S seems to have turned itself around lately, a lot of women’s fashion is now out of stock as soon as it’s available. I can’t see the big Boots shops disappearing, they’re always packed. I think they’ve closed a lot of their smaller stores. I wish they would sort their website out though.

LegoBingo · 12/01/2025 17:40

LUSH?
whsmiths will never close. It just keeps going and going fueled by hospital and train station branches

Lush?! I very much doubt it. I went before Christmas and the queues were crazy! I went last week for a facial and mid morning on a midweek Thursday after Christmas it was really busy.

Didn't know TJ Hughes still existed! Closed our local one years ago.

I agree with Argos. I think Sainsbury’s will close the ones within Sainsbury’s stores and try to sell it off
It’s like a crap Amazon with added effort of having to go there.

Unlike Amazon it doesn’t have 90% fake reviews, a deluge of AI-generated listings for cheap Chinese knockoffs, or an active boycott against it. You also can’t earn nectar points from Amazon.

Co-Op is awful and hugely over priced . Wish it would go under

I hope you lose your job as well @Upwiththelark76 Hmm

Our local Co-op sells some really high quality food items and wines. I don't want to lose the Co-op.

It is really shitty to wish for companies go into liquidation Angry

I was referring to the monopoly they have in rural areas . Where folk have no choice but to shop there at hugely inflated prices compared to the other supermarkets . In my small town there is only a co-op and a co-op local . No choice no competition . If you don’t drive or are elderly that’s your lot . Forced to pay the prices

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 12/01/2025 18:45

The Boots near us was fantastic after Covid. So many great beauty counters with well trained staff offering advice and demos. It was like being in Sephora but with a loyalty card.

I was in there last week. The counters were still there but the slots for samples were empty and there was very little stock. I think it's going. I'll miss it.

IDK how Smiths keeps going. I walk through one every week on my way to the bus stop and it's a gloomy hell hole. I don't even use it at airports. I have a Kindle and a Readly subscription so they don't sell anything I need.

What is shitty is the way that Co Op build and open new "smaller" stores in smaller towns and villages which cause the existing small/independent shops to close down. It's happened in 3 or 4 villages near where I live, including our own village. Used to have a locally owned Spar shop in our village which never stood a chance when the shiny new Co Op opened virtually across the road. Same in another village a few miles away. Also, in our nearest small town. They've been on a growth spurt in the last few years and instead of buying existing private convenience stores, they're just building new and forcing the older stores out of business. Not very compassionate for a so called "caring" company.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/01/2025 18:02

My local branches of Halfords and Boots are fab. Boots got a new lease of life when House of Fraser closed and broadened its range of cosmetics and perfumes. The ladies on beauty are very helpful. The optician staff and pharmacy less so and the staff at the main tills don't know about please and thank you.

I wonder if Asda is in the frame? Also wonder about White Stuff. Pur local branch has closed and they don't seem to have moved on style wise in the last five years.

Hotter? Mint Velvet? Hobbs? Phase 8?

Hotter went bust not so long ago, maybe the year before last, but were rescued.

RedRiverShore5 · 12/01/2025 18:45

When we go on holiday often the Co op is the only supermarket so I doubt they will close as they generally have a lot of customers

Hoppingabout · 12/01/2025 18:46

Is PC World now part of Curry's? If not I would have had that top just for it's terrible condescending customer service. I hated going there which isn't ideal for a shopping experience.

Our local medium sized but tatty co-op is often rammed - it's got the best fruit and veg of all the supermarkets bar waitrose [and m&s] - so in that respect alone it's not a 'rip off' but good value for money

ooooohnoooooo · 12/01/2025 18:47

Carpetright. Huge stores, always empty. Ridiculously expensive.

M&S

Currently on 150 days plus payment terms for my invoices.. even though I paid my suppliers last year...

They've often treated their suppliers badly. Our local farm used to supply them with fruit and veg. If the farm had a bad harvest they still had to supply the contracted quantity to keep the contract. Heard one year the farm had to buy in spring onions bunches and took a penny loss per bundle.

I agree with you.

Our local co-ops are all fantastic, some bargains, deliver within the hour for a cheap fee which has been invaluable whilst disabled. Love their ethics too.
