What retailer do you think will go bust next?

My money is on Poundstretcher. Went into my local one today. Shelves empty, looking old and dirty and prices aren’t really cheap for a discount retailer…

I hope not Timpson's, really admire their ethos.

I don’t think WHSmith would go as they have the post office in most of them (round here anyway)

Ours is closing - Post Office is going too even though it has massive queues all day, every day

sarah12398 · 12/01/2025 18:28

M&S

Currently on 150 days plus payment terms for my invoices.. even though I paid my suppliers last year...

Why?

I think it is horrible to wish for any retailer to disappear. Do you really think it is a good idea to want retail staff to lose their jobs Hmm

I don't want any retailer to close down.

WimbyAce · 12/01/2025 18:29

Morrisons

RedRiverShore5 · 12/01/2025 18:29

In our retail park, the Levi's shop, Barbour and L'Occatine are alway fairly empty.

Juliagreeneyes · 12/01/2025 18:25

Agree - I bought something from them when they started out and it was well made and nice. Ordered some earrings recently in the same and was shocked that they were much tinier than the photos (to a level of near misrepresentation IMO), and looked like they came from Claire’s.

Now I’ve said that, I also think Claire’s is dreadful at the moment - even kids aren’t that interested in their tat these days - and also Accessorize and Monsoon must be a bit shaky - all the products are massively overpriced for what they are.

Same thing happened to me with Monica Vinader. The studs were barely visible to the naked eye.

Argos, never has anything in what you want, and both have closed down near me. Also don't see the point in it if you can just order from Amazon.
Agree to WH Smith as well.

I just bought a bedside table from there recently. Couldn't find one in B&Ms so Argos was my next bet.

In certain rural parts of the country the Co-Op has a virtual monopoly as the nearest "supermarket", so I reckon they're doing just fine in their main market.

This ⬆️
A monopoly where some folk don’t have the option to travel to cheaper supermarkets especially the elderly .
Co-Op is awful and hugely over priced . Wish there was competition for them .

coolkatt · 12/01/2025 18:29

We just got a rituals store open in my city, beautiful store but always empty. Can't see how it can last especially with the rent prices in my shopping centre

Snowmanscarf · 12/01/2025 18:30

Argos is something line the third biggest online store.

I used to think Next because their clothes were just so awful season after season but in the past year or two things seem to have picked up, clothes are better, less fussiness and they added in Bath & Body Works which is a hugely popular brand where I live, I’m quite impressed, they must have a brilliant marketing team.

I think Hotel Chocolat are starting to decline, the prices have increased massively but the chocolates are not nearly as nice as they were. Won’t be the next one to go but they’re on their way imvho.

Edited

They are opening a new one where I live and spending loads on fitting out the shop by the looks of it. (H. Choc)

Giggorata · 12/01/2025 18:30

New Look, Claire's and Matalan

I agree that Poundstretcher is shit. Hasn't been cheap for 4-5 years. At least 30-40% more than B & M and Home Bargains. And yeah it always looks grubby. Not sure if it will go tits up anytime soon though.

I would have said WH Smiths, as it's a tedious, grimy, boring, overpriced shithole, but the fact that they are in many train stations and airports seems to keep saving them.

I preferred John Menzies myself...

Apart from this ^ I don't honestly know. I would never have guessed Wilkos would have gone tits up, but apparently there was some dodgy shit going on at the top that finished the company off. (Rather than a lack of customers.) So it's very hard to figure out who will go next. Maybe a retailer like Next. Overpriced and overrated, and not that may people were at their after-Christmas sale a few weeks ago... (Compared to usual.)

Next are massively diversifying - they sell so many brands now online!

notanaskhole · 12/01/2025 18:30

I’m not in the UK but was in London last week and went to several Boots. What’s happened!?? Empty shelves, dim lighting couldn’t see properly, no bags in one of them, wasn’t allowed to buy cold&flu tablets because I had no symptoms (wanted to bring them back home because I always get a nasty flu and they help). Also quite dirty.

I had to go to three different Boots to get all the (ordinary) things I wanted because the shelves were empty.

HenDoNot · 12/01/2025 17:47

Can’t go into an airport without seeing a WHS, and the one in my town has the only post office for miles around. I’d be surprised to see them go under.

Argos on the other hand…

Argos have all been placed into Sainabury stores as it’s own by them.

Every sensible as it means the stores are avaliable close to people and if you’re me you so to pick up an argos order and end up buying stuff from sainsbury.

LeeHarper5 · 12/01/2025 18:30

Tesco bought Paperchase and most stores have at least one bay of Paperchase products on display. There is nothing like the selection the stores had and what they do have just doesn’t sell, hence why the planned ‘aisles’ of Paperchase haven’t rolled out.

My local Monsoon and Accessorize is always empty. Monsoon was my go to for occasion wear but not anymore.

crazycrofter · 12/01/2025 18:30

I think Argos has a useful place - twice recently I've needed something immediately (a computer mouse and a watch) and I've wondered where to go, knowing that Amazon wouldn't deliver quickly enough. Also, I have an Argos card which allows me to spread the cost, which I've used loads over the last few years for things like phones.

RedRiverShore5 · 12/01/2025 18:31

Yes Rituals recently opened on the retail park, it was full before Christmas as it was new and Christmas trade, don't know about now though

PickAChew · 12/01/2025 18:31

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 12/01/2025 17:51

Is it? I'm surprised. Crazy overpriced.

Not all of them. There's 2 near me. A tiny one, which is always busy, and a larger one which doesn't ever seem to be busy. They're reasonably priced for most items.

Their prices do seem to vary regionally and some of the more remote stores have mark ups to reflect the higher costs of delivering to the store.

rainythursdayontheavenue · 12/01/2025 18:32

My son in law works for Asda. He said they're being crippled by shoplifting. Over the Christmas quarter, his store had eye watering losses.

I think Monsoon is now online only? Same as Karen Millen.

DoneAndNotDusted · 12/01/2025 18:32

House of Fraser stores. Disaster after Ashley's takeover (some have closed already, and I know of one which is due to close)
Agree re WH Smith, maybe they'll just have the airport/station ones.
Fatface may go online only now it's owned by Next. Never see many people in there, or Seasalt.

TribeofFfive · 12/01/2025 18:32

Claires. There’s one not far from me and it’s always empty with a “buy 3, get 3 free” sign up. It’s too uncool for anyone over 10 and too tatty for parents of anyone under 10.

HellofromJohnCraven · 12/01/2025 18:32

Ah Halfords!
The place where they sold me the correct windscreen wipers, I had the wrong car seemingly.
When I took said wipers back, they argued the toss for 5 mins. I said please go fit them then. He returned a few mins later to tell me that they didn't fit but it was my fault for having the wrong car.
Literally any car part you want you can get online.
