What retailer do you think will go bust next?

My money is on Poundstretcher. Went into my local one today. Shelves empty, looking old and dirty and prices aren’t really cheap for a discount retailer…

Where I live Lidl wants to build a new store very close to a Morrisons. I wish they'd just take it over and turn it into a Lidl!

The Morrisons near me has really gone downhill, empty shelves, poor fresh (ha) produce burnt offerings from indoor bakery, stinking fresh fish counter, and stinking cheese fridges. It used to be one if the best until it was bought out by the American business. When it goes (and it will) I hope a decent supermarket takes over, otherwise I can see the land being turned into properties.

I’m always surprised by how often Boots is mentioned on these threads. They’ve made some very savvy decisions over the years. They got out of physical media long before the rest of the retail world realised it was dying. They got out of homeware once the supermarkets started doing it on a bigger and more effective scale. They also invested heavily in services (opticians, hearing aid clinics etc.) at the right time. And that’s before you even consider the amount of NHS community funding they receive.

I know Boots are reducing their store estate, which is usually a sign of trouble, but frankly this was well overdue for them (and is an area they haven’t made good decisions in the past). They took over quite a few smaller chains and simply converted the stores to Boots stores, rather than actually considering whether they needed them. For example, in my home town they converted the Dollond and Aitchison optician's to a Boots optician’s when they bought that chain, even though there was an optician’s in their main store barely two minutes walk away. And where I live now, there was still a Boots for years on what was traditionally the High Street, even though they’d opened a bigger and better store in the then new shopping centre just over the road. That’s the kind of thinking that needs to change.

Edited

They also got the Mac stockist deal, which has been a good boost for them. Previously in my nearest city only Harvey Nicks & airport stocked it, now it’s in most of the Boots stores.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 13/01/2025 18:51

I love Boots, although when I go in the one on my local retail park some shelves are empty.
Shop online with them at least once a month, like having my points which come in handy, the website is easy to use and I’ve never had a wrong order sent.

It has been a long time theory that these shops do not stay in business by selling Reeces Pieces and overpriced can of pop.

Definately something going on to afford the priority sites they occupy

Same with the mobile phone accessory shops which never have customers either, especially the ones in motorway service stations where the rents will be enormous and impossible to cover just by selling an occasional phone charger or phone case.

Can you tell me what comparable national chemist's chain there is? Where will you take your prescription? One of the most intelligent questions you can ask in business is very simple: "compared to what?" I don't think Boots has improved since the Yanks took over but I know of no credible national alternative.

Don’t most people use Pharmacy2U, or similar? So much more convenient, especially for older people.

This is interesting. I used to always have a leather Radley bag for work (suit and smart handbag required) but these days there is nothing that I like. I assumed it was that my tastes had changed as I aged but maybe not.

Also, I use to like the fact their bags had multiple sections. These days they are all one big sack like most bags.

I still use one of their cloth bags for shopping - 10 years old and still going strong (and only cost £10 in the sales).

Not at all. They still do the type of bags you've described. I last bought one a couple of years ago. The cross body pocket bags are perfect for anywhere where you want security. Radley's problem is their bags don't wear out.

Anyone said "HomeBase"

When we bought our house in 1990 Homebase was a brilliant shop , great products , good turnover of stock . We were in there ( it seemed like we lived there Grin )
Then B&Q came along .....bigger , used by Trades , cheaper .
Last time I went to Homebase was when I was waiting for my DD , I was saddened by how quiet and rundown it was .

A couple of them round our way have gone already

Walgreens the USA owners are having big problems. They've pulled out of some areas for safety reasons not just wholesale shoplifting but armed robbery. They want to offload boots alliance but they've misread the UK market so badly not investing in stores, shutting the hopeless cases far too late.

It's the same at the York Morrisons store - really gone downhill in the last year or so. We used to go in quite a lot, but the last few times, there've been lots of empty shelves, empty displays of cooled items and the fruit/veg/meat/bakery has all looked pretty manky. Even their cafe has gone downhill - last time we went, they had barely anything hot available to order.

Nettleteaser101 · 13/01/2025 18:56

I think Boots also. Our local one is quite big but the shelves are empty and the staff aren't great either.

No. I've never even heard of Pharmacy2U. I assume they deliver prescriptions to your home but presumably you have to be in? Which I'm not likely to be, so far less convenient than going to Boots.

I'm amazed at everyone saying Boots. I don't think I've ever been in a Boots that wasn't heaving.

My son has being saying for years that they are exactly that, and it’s well known. They are essentially the Breaking Bad car wash but on a larger scale.

Absolutely! Sort it out Westminster Council / Government. Get a task force together & impose new regulations / restrictions. This has been going on for years and is effectively sanctioning organised crime gangs to have a prominent store front.

Pumpkincozynights · 13/01/2025 18:57

We use the co op when we go on holiday to a very rural location. In fact it’s the sole reason dh opened a co op store card. It’s good value and quality actually.
I have never used Shein. I agree about it being very bad for our economy to use it, never mind the environmental impact.
I thought the sweet shops had been closed down. They are definitely a money laundering cover. A sweet shop opened near me. There was absolutely no way it was legitimate. There are several very well known brands which operate from my town or near by, they all have factory outlet stores. This shop is selling these same brands, but not at the discounted crate. Unsurprisingly the police have shut down this shop.

Morrisons

Same - the one near me is a worse stocked, insanely high priced version of the big Tesco down the street

I can't see it being WH Smith as they often the only place to buy snacks, magazines etc in train stations and smaller airports. They are ridiculously overpriced - I'm not a fan at all.

I'm amazed Boots keeps going but I'm guessing it's only because of the pharmacy side as the shelves in the one near me are nearly always low and many empty. Mine also had very dim lighting and is poorly staffed.

I wonder about the CO OP's future.

I've noticed boots is appalling too! Their app only has discounts now for massive purchases and it's all self checking out which you can't use vouchers or coupons on. Fragrance area in bigger shops is good though.

I’ve never understood how those ubiquitous American sweet shops in central London stay afloat. There’s hardly any customers but always several staff. Their rents must be sky high & they seem to be open late. I’m convinced they’re part of a money laundering scheme!

Money laundering is the ticket. This is well known.

Hedgerowdragon · 13/01/2025 19:02

We use a local direct pharmacy delivery service. Only bad thing is we have to be in to accept. But if I have been to Dr I would actually prefer to be handed the prescription and go to Boots next door!
The new Curry’s advert actually makes a thing of customers touching and opening things.

You don’t need to be in, most of the packets go through letterbox size.

angela1952 · 13/01/2025 19:09

I’d say WHS, many of their stores are run down and our local one appears to have just one staff member in sight. Some of the bigger branches have taken on Post Office businesses though which may keep them afloat. Ryman’s, although they have less stock, seem to sell more.
