What retailer do you think will go bust next?

My money is on Poundstretcher. Went into my local one today. Shelves empty, looking old and dirty and prices aren’t really cheap for a discount retailer…

I think the looking up companies house for the retailers on this thread is a bit of a red herring tbh. It all comes down to public demand and if you fall out of grace with the public then it really doesn't matter what you have in your accounts.

Does matter to pension funds and other shareholders.

@snowmichael so Amazon is still more expensive.
My point is so many people dismiss shops like B+M for being full of "plastic crap" not realising they sell ordinary household items that are brand names (like Addis).
People say they have to order so much online because "all the decent shops have closed down and all we have are discount shops" (© all the moaners on my home town Facebook group 😂) but perhaps if they actually went into some of these shops they would see what they sell and wouldn't need to go to Amazon to buy basics like sellotape or batteries.
The comments on here about HMV prove that. The HMV of now is completely different to the one of a decade ago. They changed and evolved and are doing better.

> so Amazon is still more expensive.
Not for me
The nearest town is a £7 return bus ride away

I'm sure people must be saying Next because they don't like the clothes rather than any good reason.

Next is going down the line department stores took. Which in the end annoyed me.

Say I wanted a white shirt, there were white shirts in concessions across Debenhams. So I had to walk round and round hunting down a white shirt. It often defeated me. In the end I just ignored the vast women's section, only buying in beauty, children's and occasionally mens.

I don't like this type of layout. When I worked an hour for lunch just wasn't enough time.

Needmorelego · 13/01/2025 16:05

@snowmichael where do you live?
Single bus fairs are capped at £3 (so £6 total) or you get a Dayrider (whichever is cheaper -that or two singles).
Obviously if you are paying for public transport or car costs/parking you have to add on that amount to your total spend but if you do a big shop all on one day a few times a year then it doesn't really add up that much.

They don't sell concessions in our store, I have seen Laura Ashley furniture in large stores that display furniture, maybe it just the very large stores. I like the different brands online because I can use my delivery pass for them and I don't have to order from separate places.

Rymans, Timpsons, Claire’s, perfume shop.

My local Claire's closed at the weekend!

Every time I walk by I remember the trauma of going in with DD to get a couple of things but then the offers were 'Buy 3 Get 3' or, even worse, 'Buy 5, Get 5'
We'd spend AGES in there !!

Now can't recreate this with DGD!

Claire's are in Matalan here now.

So I say:
Claire's
Hotel Chocolat
(Lush has gone from my town already)

SnappyGreyLemur · 13/01/2025 16:15

They sell some Claire’s hair accessories in Asda. They may have sold other stuff but I didn’t look too closely.

"Collect from 1pm tomorrow" is a pretty good service if you ask me.
They basically keep stock at a warehouse and send it out when ordered.
It's generally very efficient.

You can search on Argos website/app for other stores if you need it today. Have 4 Sainsburys with Argos inside plus Leicester stand alone. Think DF got the bus to pick my order up as it’s free on bus for him

Not all bus routes are covered by the national scheme and the cap is per bus trip not per end to end journey. (so a change of bus, often to a route run by a different company, will mean another fare).

The body shop
New look

AlexisP90 · 13/01/2025 17:50

WH smith have the train/airport market but they also pay extortionate rent to network rail/other owners of the space. Still, they have post office and toys r us in a lot of them now so I think they will stay.

Argos will go in house to Sainsbury's. Are there even anymore left stand alone now?

Clothing will go soon I think. Except primark. We have a new look, river island and peacocks here and it's dead nearly everyday. The times I have been in there and liked something they haven't had my size and I've had to order online. Sure people still like to go ans try things on but the market is getting small VS online and the rents, again, are crippling them.

I think a lot of the card shops e.g. Clinton's, The Card Factory etc, as not as many people buy cards these days.

NorthernLassDownSouth · 13/01/2025 18:06

I wish it was Shein, Temu and the like. They rely on underpaying and overworking their workers, and the quality is terrible.

Lincslady53 · 13/01/2025 18:06

Toastyfeetbythefire · 12/01/2025 17:54

Edinburgh Woollen Mill.
who even shops there? I swear they’re money laundering rather than a real shop!
and Crew clothing. Over expensive, bland, again who shops there?

Older people. When MIL was alive it was the only place near us where we could get clothes that were not too expensive and I could get on and off her easily. Not fashionable, but practical for her.

Landlords have reduced rents. The council rates here North Wales are more than in an English city. Council tax is out of hand.

justasking111 · 13/01/2025 18:10

Special cards I go to a little art shop. Something for every family member, friends, events that you can think of. Otherwise ASDA do cards 3 for £3. They're pretty good. I buy half a dozen at a time.

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 12/01/2025 17:51

Is it? I'm surprised. Crazy overpriced.

Co-op is a convenience format.

They are generally set up in local community areas, away from large supermarkets.

So they can charge more because of the convenience for people locally. Principle being that it’s easy to pop to Co-op for top up shops than travelling 5+ miles to the nearest big supermarket. Especially if you don’t drive.

Candy1985 · 13/01/2025 18:12

Boots is closing down near me next one I think will be Clinton’s ours is always dead.

anon666 · 13/01/2025 18:12

All of them. 😫 WH Smith today - they've decimated their stock, got ToysRUs in for part of the store. Change is afoot.

Went to TheWorks the other day, all complete crap. No proper books, just cheap "pseudo-books". Nothing I wanted at all.

Only the high quality retailers are holding on to decent stock from what I can see.

I am guessing it's a combination of online shopping and then inflation/value of the pound meaning that retailers can't get cheap goods like they used to. Pressure from both sides.

justasking111 · 13/01/2025 18:13

Our Co-op are open for longer hours. I love their thin base pizzas, breads, wines. If I just want say bread, milk, vegetables. I'm not schlepping around a large supermarket.

I don’t think there is a clean Poundstretchers out there.
