Identify my bites!

MyGodMyThighs · 12/01/2025 14:57

Something has bitten me, in bed at night. The cats don’t have fleas and I don’t think this looks like the dreaded bed bugs.

I have five bites - on my left hand, left upper arm, right wrist, right elbow and one on my upper back. They are relentlessly itchy. I have scratched them. They are swollen, particularly the one on my hand.

Nothing is relieving the itch. I’ve taken a claritin and put some aloe vera gel on and am just sitting here going quietly mad!

(We are in the U.K., south west coast).

I can't identify the bites, but get some Germolene because it has a numbing agent to help relieve pain and itchiness.

MyGodMyThighs · 12/01/2025 15:03

Ah, fab thank you! It really is driving me crazy.

Blow a hairdryer on them just to the point that it gets too hot. It takes the itch out them, promise. Can't help with what bit you though, sorry!

MeandEmLover · 12/01/2025 15:08

Mosquito!
Keep an eye on them OP as I'm very allergic to Mosquito bites & have had cellulitis several times from them.
They look angry & sore - track the redness around them

MyGodMyThighs · 12/01/2025 15:17

Hairdryer tip sounds interesting! I’ll give it a try.

I am pretty sure it’s not a mosquito. I have bionic hearing and if there’s ever one in the bedroom at night I hear it and can get it squashed and gone before it has its wicked way. Plus the itch is so much more intense and, I don’t know, menacing?

I’m wondering about spiders? Honestly I don’t want to get into bed tonight as this is brutal!

The one on my left hand is the worst of the lot.

I know what you mean about hearing the mosquitos & I'm primed for it too but still manage to get bitten from time to time.

I'd ve watching that red line extending from the centre & if it starts travelling up your arm I'd get medical advice

squirrelnutcartel · 12/01/2025 15:26

It's not a spider as they have two puncture marks fairly.close together, plus they're hibernating now. Flea bites tend not to swell or become infected, so I'm going with mosquito bites. I've always found mozzie bites to be more itchy than fleabites as well.

MeandEmLover · 12/01/2025 15:27

I would take off rings too as a precaution.

I got bitten on the inside of my wrist in almost the same place as your other photo

I know I was in trouble within an hour or so & by the time I found a doctor (we were abroad) my hand looked like an inflated rubber glove & luckily I had taken off my rings or I'd have been in real trouble.

yggvugg · 12/01/2025 15:27

Your hand looks infected.

MeandEmLover · 12/01/2025 15:29

@yggvugg I agree (sadly from experience)

MyGodMyThighs · 12/01/2025 15:34

Thank you. I have been wondering about that red line. I thought I’d done it from scratching but it’s there hours later.

Am feeling a bit weird. Maybe just the claritin. Will keep an eye on them, of course it’s Sunday so no pharmacies or anything open around here.

MeandEmLover · 12/01/2025 15:37

That red line is infection travelling up a vein so please watch it carefully & go for help if it continues to grow.

Draw a circle around the site of redness & swelling & also track if its growing outside the drawn ring

Take off your wedding rings

I think you'll need antibiotics

MeandEmLover · 12/01/2025 15:38

Is it painful? Cellulitis is an infection in the cells of the skin & is as painful as a broken bone (I've had both)

MyGodMyThighs · 12/01/2025 15:39

I will do, thank you. Really hoping it calms as I will struggle to get to a GP tomorrow. Will of course find a way if it looks necessary.

MyGodMyThighs · 12/01/2025 15:40

I would say it’s slightly sore rather than painful.

I have been getting these bites too, I started a thread just after Christmas and another poster was also getting bitten but didn't know what it was. I'm very sensitive to things biting me, mosquitos etc.

My conclusion was it could have been Chiggers as we visited a friend with pets, but I am still getting them weeks later!

MyGodMyThighs · 12/01/2025 16:26

Have never heard of chiggers?

Have taken a promethazine. Still itchy as fuck. Am going to read, hopefully it’ll be a distraction.

Thank you for the info @MeandEmLover.

My son had a bit like your hand. It was evening when he noticed it but he has been golfing earlier in the day. Looked just like yours. For 24 hours it continued to swell, and wasn't as itchy later on, he said it felt sore.
My nurse friend advised two antihistamines, she said citrizine(not sure of spelling), and to keep it clean. She said if after 48 hrs it was still spreading to seek medical help. We did as advised and it was ok after 2/3 days. Never did know what it was.

MeandEmLover · 13/01/2025 15:11

@MyGodMyThighs how are you today?

Serpentstooth · 13/01/2025 15:16

Get some antihistamine cream for those bites. Show the pharmacist while you're re there, they may have better suggestion.
