Does anyone cover their car (icy nights)

PassingStranger · 11/01/2025 22:16

People talk of scraping and deicing the car on a cold morning but does anyone cover their car windscreen with a sheet or blanket.

We do
I suppose it depends on your parking situation?
Do people still cover their windscreens?👀

Yes I do and I have done tonight ready for my early start to work tomorrow. Its easy and effective and I don't know why everyone doesn't do it but I look down my street and it seems I'm the only one.

Scrowy · 11/01/2025 22:20

No. I have a heated windscreen. Will never ever have a car that doesn't again.

Abbaa · 11/01/2025 22:27

We do, our next door neighbours do, even with a heated windscreen it still saves time!

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 11/01/2025 22:28

Yes, with a car windscreen cover

ExtraDisorganised · 11/01/2025 22:29

Yes, one of those foil windscreen covers, still have to scrape the side windows but the front is good to go immediately, really useful.

Haribosweets · 11/01/2025 22:30

I do, but seem to be the only person in my road. I have a big proper ice blanket cover that goes over the windscreen and wingmirrors and is kept on by flaps inside the door.
I do not have time to scrap every morning!

StarDolphins · 11/01/2025 22:33

I don’t! I just switch engine on in the morning & go back in the house!

YourWinter · 11/01/2025 22:33

I have a grey plastic (?) sheet that covers the windscreen and is secured by the front doors, and I put a thick flattened cardboard box over that. If I forget and have to scrape the ice off it isn’t really a problem. One of my old cars had a heated front screen but the others have only had heated rear screens.

Meadowfinch · 11/01/2025 22:37

Yes, I have a cotton throw that covers the screen & bonnet. It makes things much quicker on school mornings.

If your car is stolen when you leave it with the engine running, your insurance won't cover you...

Toddlerteaplease · 11/01/2025 22:41

My colleague does. But I think having to handle and store a wet cover would be worse! But I love de icing my car.

Benshawsberries · 11/01/2025 22:43

Yes I’ve got a windscreen cover this winter it’s a game changer

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/01/2025 22:46

No but we can remotely de ice and warm up the car in the mornings

fruitpastille · 11/01/2025 22:47

We've done it this week and it's been worth it especially as my heater is crap. The cover isn't wet. I just take it off and shove it in the boot.

Me too. It defrosts in the time it takes me to make a mug of coffee and put on my make-up. Not worried about the car being stolen, we are gated.

This.
Never leave your car unattended .

Mine does get a thick layer of frost that melts, but I give it a quick shake, fold and pop it behind a planter for when I get home. Then either back on or in the boot if the weather has warmed up. Cost about £4 from Aldi, worth every penny. I use it in very hot weather too as my work car park is a sun trap and I park facing south.

TheTruthHurtsDontIt · 11/01/2025 23:00

Nope, but only because for some reason it makes my windscreen freeze on the inside instead which is more annoying. Mine gets left running on the drive, no concerns about it being stolen.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 11/01/2025 23:01

I used to with my old car, had an ice cover thing that you put over outside of the windscreen and wraps around and suckers to the inside of the windscreen, but new (to me) car has heated screens, front and back, heated seats and really good blowers, so I switch it on without starting the engine, and while the front and back screens are clearing and my seat is warming up, I squirt the side windows with de-icer, two minutes and ready to go

SausageShop · 11/01/2025 23:03

Yes - although the inside of the windscreen still gets frozen on one of ours!

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 11/01/2025 23:06

My last car I used to, made so much difference. My new one is set to defrost itself in time for me to leave.

I’m always surprised at the number of people who don’t cover but spend time scraping. I get irrationally annoyed at the noise of engines idling in the morning.

We have similar, think it came from B&M or middle of Lidl.

They’d soon bring it back, it’s a banger!

I can remotely heat my car up from inside the house as I'm finishing my cup of coffee.

I can turn on the heated windscreen and rear window, the heated seats and the heated steering wheel from an app on my phone.

I just hop in when I'm ready to go and drive off toasty warm.

BellissimoGecko · 12/01/2025 09:22

Wow, @Scrowy, what kind of car do you have?
