Do Neurotypical people identify with traits on this list too?

Having sat through DS's autism assessment and seeing myself in a lot of his traits, I'm now in the process of seeking an autism assessment for myself. I've been spending a lot of time reading about autistic traits in undiagnosed/high masking women, and I really identify with a lot of them.

When I read some of these things though, I am surprised that this wouldn't be how a lot of fairly intelligent, slightly anxious people feel. The people I know well enough to ask are all some kind of neurodivergent themselves. So I thought I'd ask on here.

This is an example of a list I found. I read it and just thought well obviously, that sounds quite like me but would a lot of women not see themselves in a lot of this, autistic or not?

I would genuinely love to find out I'm autistic at this stage, I'm probably overthinking it... 😆

@Magamom

Unfortunately no medication for autism. 😢

Yes but there’s vitamins and lifestyle changes to help ease symptoms, many books out there on it. Wish you the best of luck x

Vitamins for autism. Yay

Vitamins to ease autism?

I didn’t really recognise myself in any of the sections at all. I thought I would as there are so many statements surely some might apply.

There are three sections that describe my teen to a T. We have thought for a long time she is autistic but she has other diagnoses so it has never been pursued.

Depressing that people are still pushing that kind of nonsense in 2025, isn’t it?

Crowfinch · 10/01/2025 18:52

It would be interesting if that enormous list of traits on there were split into 12 and labelled under horoscope types. The whole thing of looking at list of traits and matching them to yourself is very reminiscent of being a teenager and working out how like my start sign I was ( cancer: love animals, can be reclusive, think deeply, love being at home, take song lyrics and words to heart, feel deep connection to friends).

Onelifeonly · 10/01/2025 19:05

I identify with some of the traits on the list - it's so long and precise I think everybody would - but not most by any means and I'm already 100% sure I'm not autistic. I do have family members who probably are, though none have a formal diagnosis. I'm not blood related to one of the possible people that is likely to be autistic themselves and the source of the genes for some of them - they even say they are - but I am to others.

I was told it is a spectrum, not just in degree of severity, but one that we all lie along somewhere. I once asked my dc's therapist if he thought dc had autistic traits and his response was something like, don't we all?

Unsurprising with that username though.

That's the problem, it's not precise at all. Not when it comes to autism anyway; it's a massive list of what is essentially human behaviour with variations. Some autistic people will relate to a lot of it (I don't) but it also catches ADHD, OCD, several mentally health conditions and bog standard, run of the mill shot that bothers NT people sometimes.

Of all the lists of 'this is what autism is' I have seen on the internet, this is up there among the worst.

FutureFry · 10/01/2025 23:48

I don't resonates with the majority. Perhaps 10 or less, and I'm NT as far as I know.

Some of the things on the list are quite odd though, like being honest and irritable bowel.

ViolinsPlayGentlyOn · 11/01/2025 12:50

Gastrointestinal problems are surprisingly more common in people with ASD -there have been a lot of studies showing that, but I’m not sure anyone’s completely worked out why. So that’s one of the (few) things on the list that actually made sense to me.

drspouse · 11/01/2025 13:34

But the direction is having ASD -> more likely to have bowel problems not having bowel problems -> definitely have ASD.

lljkk · 11/01/2025 17:51

Do they really have more GI problems or do they just have less resilience to deal with the GI problems? How could someone tell which?

Haven't read about this, but I would be extremely wary of such studies after all the damage caused by Andrew Wakefield and his cynical, mercenary work on putting flawed studies together to link autism and bowel disease and then vaccines. Man should be in jail.

Oreyt · 11/01/2025 21:41

Genuinely has anyone tried vitamins to help with the affects of autism?

Stress / Anxiety / Tiredness / Foggy Brain / Forgetfulness etc?

Oreyt · 11/01/2025 21:42

Is it Effects?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 11/01/2025 23:01

Effects.

dottiehens · 12/01/2025 07:27

I identity with a few in each list but only at this point in my life. As a grown up adult. I am not sure what it means but some of the things there are attributed to being from some zodiac signs too.
