Just wondering what people have noticed has gone up the most? for me it's kitchen roll. It seems to have gone up so much.

Bisto gravy granules
3 quid for a small pack in Tesco recently. Crazy

Iceland have bisto on there 3 for £5 deal. I grabbed 3 last week so sorted for a few months.

Olive oil!

This... I have to ration it because my husband uses it to fry an egg or fills a dish for roast potatoes, and then obviously pours it away!

DreamSpaceships · 09/01/2025 07:39

For me it’s definitely the basics I notice it on. When chocolate bars for example went up I just stopped buying them as a weekly thing but it’s quite hard to do that with milk, butter, meat, fruit, veg etc. And they still have offers on chocolate bars but they don’t so much on vegetables!

I’ve gone down a brand on lots of cupboard items but lots of people are already buying the cheapest option and aren’t able to do that.

We’ve recently switched to rapeseed for cooking as half the price.

BlackChunkyBoots · 09/01/2025 07:46

The UK is surrounded by effing water yet fish is so effing expensive. Why?

I miss olive oil too. And steak. And I rarely pick up chicken these days. My daughter is vegetarian so we eat a lot of beans, pulses and vegetables but they've all gone up too. The cost of halloumi 😱. Of mozzarella 💀. Even "basics" like the herbs and spices to make the meat free curry taste nice.

The cat's Dreamies! I have to shop around for deals!

Iliketulips · 09/01/2025 07:50

Olive oil has gone up massively in the last couple of years. I also buy Sunflower oil, that's gone from £1.85 to £2.10 recently.

SevenWeeks · 09/01/2025 07:56

Tesco are now charging £3.95 for those Baxters chef's selection tins of soup. I get that they're supposed to be a bit 'posh' but £3.95 for a tin of soup that serves one person?

BlackChunkyBoots · 09/01/2025 08:02

I've thought of another. J'accuse SAINSBURY'S for the worst hikes in food prices recently. I would buy the own brand fruit and nut muesli for £2/750g three or 4 years ago. It's now £2.75.

nookmiles · 09/01/2025 08:10

It's really depressing. Literally everything in my trolley has gone up. And whilst some things might "only" be 25p / 50p more it adds up over the trolley. Especially when other products have doubled in price.

My DH used to moan about the cost of the food shop. Thinking it must be me buying expensive brands (which I don't, we use supermarket own).
Recently when I had an operation he did the food shop alone for the first time since about 2021 and was genuinely shocked at the prices in the supermarket and realised it's not me with expensive taste. It's just how it is now!

SeatonCarew · 09/01/2025 08:26

Heinz beans - the snack pot size. DH likes these - were £2.50 , though often on offer 2 for £4 or so. Now £3.50 for the same pack of 4 and not seen any offers lately.
Tins should be better value but I don’t eat them so the excess gets binned.

If you have a Farm Foods near you, they have 24 cans of Heinz beans for £15, plus they have money off coupons for various levels of spend. You could put the other half of the tin in the freezer for next time.

Other branded bargains they have at the minute include Hellmanns mayonnaise 800g for £2.49, Whitworth's sugar for 99p a kilo and twelve large tins of Prince's tuna for £10. I find it's worth popping in every so often and stocking up on a few things.

5 years is a long time

But our wages have not doubled to counter it so 5 years with wages is penny's unlike food prices that have gone up by pounds.

MixedCouple2 · 09/01/2025 15:38

It isn't just unhealthy foods. Healthy foods like fresh veg and fruits, whooe grians and brown bread and pastas and Olive oil are no longer affordable to many. It ia very disgusting.
If I had a garden I would do as my parents and grow my own veggies and fruits. To make sure we dont do that they are building smaller homes with snaller gardens or no gardens.
My parents had a 90 foot backgarden with a massive veggie patch and mini orchard.
My house has 50cm space from front door to the kerb.
Disgusting

Yeah I was wondering why houses aren’t built with decent sized gardens anymore. Houses around war time had good sized gardens. I have a very small garden and feel really lucky as it’s just big enough for a few raised beds.

Normallynumb · 09/01/2025 21:54

I'd finally found an acceptable replacement for Azera
Sainsbury's TTD Costa Rica
£2.15 early December
£2.25 late December
£2.95 Today!!!

Woodstocks · 16/01/2025 10:13

Nothing seems to last anymore. Not only are things expensive but I’m forever producing rubbish and recycling with so many empty packs. Granola at the moment in tiny bags, ham in a pack of four slices, a pack of bread for £2 with 8 slices inside- that’s essentially a family’s lunchbox gone!

All about money. Smaller gardens means more houses can be built on a plot of land.

Because most of it is now exported.
When we were newly married fish was a cheap meal. The local town I passed through coming home from work had a row of five fish shops, all thriving. End of day they often reduced prices. Now fish is dearer than steak
Same with lamb. Everywhere you drive here in the north you’re surrounded by fields full of sheep yet it’s nearly £5 for two lamb steaks!
I think seasonal veg are extortionate now, £1 or more for a bag of sprouts.

MoonlightMemories · 16/01/2025 11:09

On the subject of sprouts, I get a bit annoyed sometimes at the variation in pricing between different pack sizings and how prepared the items are. For example, in Tesco a 500g pack of unprepared (not trimmed or peeled) fresh Brussel sprouts is just 85p, but even between me and if my partner is staying over for the week we'd struggle to go through them all. Yet a smaller prepared pack that are peeled and trimmed at a more sensible pack size for me/us is £2 for 400g or £1.50 (currently clubcard price of £1) for 200g.

hedgehogsinthehedgerow · 08/01/2025 17:37

Chypre that's impressive you kept the receipts but yes that's so depressing.

Yes chicken breast has gone up so much. And fish and butter and olive oil. People can't eat as well. Ready meals often seem like better value than cooking from scratch for things like chicken I think.

Perhaps we all better start keeping one or two receipts a year just to see (and cry!).

Muststopeating · 17/01/2025 13:40

Cathedral City at Tesco. Has always been £2.99 for the 350g block with an Aldi Price Match label. Its suddenly jumped to £3.35. 12% increase.

Irritatingly I can't boycot cheese like I have the ribs!

Teebles007 · 08/01/2025 19:28

Broccoli seems to have got really expensive recently. No idea why

I read that it was a poor harvest.

TheOracleatDelphi · 18/01/2025 02:31

Everything has gone up a lot in my opinion - we started shopping at Aldi more and more but now we struggle to keep our weekly shopping bill at a reasonable level, that's with no 'treat' stuff and no middle aisle bits and no alcohol!! Over £200 last week for 5 of us (including 2 teens and a cat!) . I cook main meals from scratch most of the time too!!

coxesorangepippin · 18/01/2025 02:35

In Canada:

Olive oil
Coffee
Baking powder
Dried apricots

This is great, as long as you can afford to have the £14 quids worth of beans sitting waiting to be used.

Same here, no treats, nothing extra that once we would have bought.
No more beer and wine, 5 family members, and 4 cats which we all love.
I cook everything from scratch ( always did) veg is pricey, meat and fish absurdly expensive now.

Little things I used to get like dried cranberries for salads, no more.
Olive oil I mix with veg oil, saving where I can, mince parcelled up in smaller weights for the freezer, and I still struggle to stay within the budget each week.
