Just wondering what people have noticed has gone up the most? for me it's kitchen roll. It seems to have gone up so much.

Asda's smart price penne was 19p at the start of the pandemic. It's now 41p.

My girls and I lived on that when ex left us in the shit. People who rely on that kind of product just cannot afford a price doubling.

I use any old oil and never noticed a difference. Have tou noticed difference to recipe outcome with half?

Absolutely none, in cooking, and tbh, if you're not a connoisseur, ( or that fussy) even in made salad dressings, the olive oil is strong enough to override the less flavourful vegatable oils.

hedgehogsinthehedgerow · 08/01/2025 20:26

I wonder if the prices will level off a bit now? Going up the same as inflation is one thing but these price hikes are way above that with no explanation really.

It feels like chicken will be the new steak, only for special occasions.

Lidl used to be a great place for cheap but good quality chocolate. I regularly bought a big bar of chocolate with chopped hazelnuts for 45p on off (full price well under £1).

hedgehogsinthehedgerow · 08/01/2025 20:29

ARichtGoodDram I agree. People in this situation must now have no choice but to go to food banks 😞

Sausages! £5 for a pack of pork sausages in Sainsbury’s. Sausages used to be a cheap meal. Now they cost the same as a chicken.

Crisps were 3 multipacks for £3.50. Now they’re £2.25 per pack (£6.75 for 3) with no deals ever.

Apileofballyhoo · 08/01/2025 20:36

Shareholders must have the same profits as before, which means we all have to pay a little extra.

mulberrybag5 · 08/01/2025 20:38

i feel like pretty much everything has gone up but I especially notice tuna, fish in general and chicken nuggets!

whydoihavetowork · 08/01/2025 20:38

Jbck · 08/01/2025 18:50

President lightly salted butter(indulgent I know) was £2.75 just before Christmas which was ridiculous and I had started to really grudge, went to buy yesterday £3.20!

It's because everyone is migrating to it from Lurpak!

whydoihavetowork · 08/01/2025 20:40

The longlife croissants in Tesco used to be £1 a pack now £1.39. There's an awful lot of things in Tesco that used to be £1 and are now £1.39/40 bloody 40% !!!

I’ve also noticed the quality of tuna has gone down. What used to be ‘flakes’ are now ‘steaks’ or ‘chunks’. God knows what you’d find in flakes these days. It’s probably just a tin of fishy water.

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 08/01/2025 20:46

Weetabix for sure.
My new year resolution is to buy something for the foodbank bin in Lidl every time l go shopping but it has to be under 50p - very slim pickings!!

Turmerictolly · 08/01/2025 20:50

Definitely cereals, olive oil and butter. Do you remember when you used to be able to get a promotion 3 big protein items for £10 at Sainsbury's not so long ago. I used to get a whole chicken, salmon fillets and a packet of mince. That would be over £15 now.

DearestItIsSnowing · 08/01/2025 20:58

BobnLen · 08/01/2025 18:53

Oatibix is about £4 now, I'm sure I used to get 2 for £4 not so long ago, I am intolerant to a lot of wheat so can't have the cheaper Weetabix

I can’t tolerate oats either so have to have Nutribix. £4.35! Each biscuit seems much smaller than a Weetabix biscuit, too.

I used to stock up when it was on offer, but that hasn’t been for a long time now.

OpalSpirit · 08/01/2025 21:02

Pukka teabags!
I really loved some of the flavours and they used to be £2:35, see them now for between £5 and £7, I could technically still afford but makes me cross so I don’t.

PilatesPeach · 08/01/2025 21:11

I don't eat meat or fish and that saves me alot of money. I also have a hiatus hernia so have given up alcohol and orange juice - again that has saved me alot of money. I am happy enough with Aldi for most things including olive oil, butter, cheese, rice etc. I really believe meat fish and booze are the biggest expenses for most people.

Morrisons still do this 3 for £10 on protein.

However on the subject of morrisons their gluten free special flakes have gone from 75p a box to £1.95

Turmerictolly · 08/01/2025 21:21

I saw that at my local Morrisons but it's now stuff like a packet of burgers or sausages , chicken fillets rather than a whole chicken etc

MixedCouple2 · 08/01/2025 21:26

Orange and apple juice in Lidl in 2021 we were paying 85p 1ltre now it is almost double that. We stopped buying juice. Instead we just do water with a squeeze of fresh lime. How exciting.
Bot sure how they get away with it. Inflation is every months and not once a ya at pike they state. Daylight robbery.

Olive oil is another and that's hard as we are from the Med and cook with olive oil only.

Blueeyedmale · 08/01/2025 21:26

Did a farmfoods shop on my way home from work this evening got some rustler burgers 49p each fish and chips for £2.49 and some air fryer meals for £1.99 pot noodles £59p don't usually shop at farmfoods but was really impressed with many of their offers.

At least they are lowering prices rather than the corporate greed of Asda,Tesco Morrisons etc Asda I've noticed most recently that everything seems to be going up

MixedCouple2 · 08/01/2025 21:31

Apileofballyhoo · 08/01/2025 20:36

True I worked in Tesco and they would happily fire people and I would have to increase prices in order to keep profits going up annually. Not aloud to fall short of predictive profits and God forbid they ever make a little less then expected. It is disgusting.

I have boycotted a lot of things and only buy essentials now. Very sad my shopping is a little boring and basic but that's is the only way they will see their actions is affecting consumers. We will stop buying as much and atick to bare minimum.

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 08/01/2025 21:32

I think it’s more that the little increases in everything means my costs are a lot more over all, but individually I think my biggest costs are meat, eggs, milk, yogurt, oil, chocolate and a lot of tea. And in summer it’s salad

WhatWillYouHaveTallulah · 08/01/2025 21:34

Well by my reckoning, we should all be a lot thinner, and perhaps in some ways, healthier with not buying, or not as much of, or as often, chocolates and sweetened juices, alcohol and sausages, meats, oils, butter, crisps, cereals...oh the list goes on and on...but that won't make us any happier 😡

embolass · 08/01/2025 21:40

I was coming on to say Chappie tinned dog food too. I used to buy the odd can to mix it up for my collie it was 60-70p. It’s now more than doubled , how can that be ??

MouldyCandy · 08/01/2025 21:50

Lovelysummerdays · 08/01/2025 20:13

Not really the point but those yo-yo bear rolls are in the Co-op for £1.90 just now. Dc like them but I can’t bring myself to pay more than 50p each.

Thank you. I'll pop down later this week. I saw them in Aldi recently for £1.80 then realised that was for a box of four packets not five! If the price has not gone up, manufacturers are shrinking the packet size!
As PP, food bank donations must have gone down as tins of soup/beans you used to be able to buy for around 50p are now well over £1.
