Bought beautiful new bedsheets. Reduced in the sale, gorgeous colours with toadstools on them, felt ok in the shop.
Got them home, washed them and they have gone shiny 🤬 like the kind of static shiny so that your duvet ends up in a weird shape and you're rolled up like a stuck sweating pig.

Am absolutely gutted (and furious 😠) and hoping a trip to Homesense will cure me of my wierd shiny-bedsheet-hate.

For some reason many of the new cotton tops we have bought this year have immediately sprung small holes. Huh. Maybe we have bugs.

Larger purchase: my house.

moths?

This thread is making me very grateful that we did Christmas on the cheap this year! Mainly because of a holiday on the 27th and not wanting any waste- but it's making me think that a basics Christmas makes sense for next year too.

@TorroFerney I had same problem with wrapping paper bought at Waitrose

I think mine was Sainsbury’s and Tesco although I expect they are all made in the same factory. I was all set to take it back and then the moment passed!

ForestAtTheSea · 04/01/2025 15:53

re the Crimpit wrap sealer: today I remembered this technique from baking: you can use a brush used for glazing just dipped in water to dampen the edges, and use an upturned shot glass or something similarly small (borrow from children's doll house tea set for example) to stamp the edges. Immediate replacement of a gadget with household items. That's I how you can make apple turnover edges, too.

Crimpit toastie maker, absolutely tiny, great if you want half a toastie and to waste a whole slice of bread

I've got one of these, I love it, but aren't they meant for 'thins' not ordinary bread.

notedbiscuits · 04/01/2025 16:19

For those who found Crimpets rubbish, did you pop the wrap/thin/bread on the Crimpet with filling in the microwave for 20 secs? Then you crimp it. This softens the bread/wrap/thin

I forgot to do the microwave thing and wrap didn’t seal as well.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2025 17:23

@TorroFerney it wasimpossible to do the 'easy peel' unwrap here without ruining nails and tearing out large chunks of paper - Xmas eve ( when I always wrap) )I reckon my swearing on it reached new levels

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2025 17:29

I've decided to go back to a70s/80s theme next Xmas - giving the modern pre made party food a miss . smoked salmon, a good ham, good-bread , nice cheese, prawn cocktails, olives, and make some homemade volauvents , sausage rolls, and cheese and pineapple on sticks plus homemade trifle, fresh fruit salad and a Black Forest gateau

Thanks @LostMySocks @Thunderpants88 and @Freddiefan

I’ll have a look at the Smash & Ocean ones but might just use flasks for a wee old-fashioned vibe.

I have been practising drives out on my own working on fear of leaving house by self so was less for supping on way to shops and more towards enjoying a picnic in the car so I can go a bit further.

I’ve been thinking of a new toastie maker so glad to read the warnings there! I remember having a nearly non-stop production line with siblings when kids and entire loaves were used so a half a toastie sounds like a sad affair!

Try the Contigo ones.. they're excellent. My only gripe would be that they're too good at keeping your drink hot 🤣
Don't leak and you just press the button when you sip to open the seal.

Wimin123 · 04/01/2025 17:49

Dyson hairdryer - randomly starting and stopping- infuriating- sent it back but currently hairdryerless as I threw out my old heavy one. At least that one worked even if it did give me arm ache. Just not sure if I want to get another Dyson?

Cherrysoup · 04/01/2025 13:46

I’ve found the trick with poinsettias is to water minimally and strictly from the bottom only. I killed many before realising this. Also keep out of range of radiators.

Edited

Also they hate draughts and many places that sell them keep them near the entrance- probably suffering before you get them home.

The M&S Christmas Colin - impossible to cut, dry, too sweet, much smaller than it looked in the box. Very disappointing.

I think all the caterpillar cakes in M&S are dry.

I certainly won't be spending any more of my hard-earned cash on any of them!

Waitrose Yule Log at £7 - just really average!

Snap! Had high hopes as reviews were good but it was left half eaten.

Plus they are delivered on chilled trucks and stored in the warehouse

I had similar issues but I bought my Dyson back in 2021, unsure if they’ve improved it. I’ve heard the Shark is good and seeing people talk about the brand T3 too.

While the Dyson worked for me sometimes it would not keep the curls of my thick long hair without mousse and hair spray so my hair always felt a bit crunchy… if anyone has used either the Shark or T3 would love to know how they get on!

5 litre glass water jar with tap. Kilner so I thought it would be well made.

Filled it with filtered water - 5 litres of water on the kitchen floor in the morning - seal leaks.

M & S 3 bird wellington. Looked lovely when cooked golden brown pastry. Just mush inside with no taste. Expensive so expected a better product.

We then tried the Tesco one which was reduced in price. It was much nicer.

PoshHorseyBird · 04/01/2025 18:14

Not this Christmas just gone but the previous one, I bought those chocolate pine cones from M&S. Really wanted to try them even though they were about £15! They were just...ok. Nothing particularly special...not sure what I was expecting really 🤣 but not worth £15 for what was essentially chocolate mousse!

I meant to add that, I kept one on a window sill, it really didn’t like that! 🤦🏼‍♀️

A remote control car for ds off Tik Tok shop. Put batteries in it and tested it as soon as it arrived. All worked fine. Wrapped it and when he opened it on Xmas day it no longer worked. Cheap shit and I should have known better. Too late to return now.

I'd request a refund on tiktok shop as usually they just do the refund and don't want the item back as ita being sent back to throw away etc. Then ds can by something else

If your going to keep them put clear nail varnish on where they will touch the ears. Always works.

I used to put nail varnish on the back plate of wristwatches, as I seemed to react to the metal. Ended up developing an allergy to the nail varnish as well. Confused
