Bought beautiful new bedsheets. Reduced in the sale, gorgeous colours with toadstools on them, felt ok in the shop.
Got them home, washed them and they have gone shiny 🤬 like the kind of static shiny so that your duvet ends up in a weird shape and you're rolled up like a stuck sweating pig.

Am absolutely gutted (and furious 😠) and hoping a trip to Homesense will cure me of my wierd shiny-bedsheet-hate.

My husband bought me some lovely (expensive) earrings. I’m always losing a single stud when the back falls off.

These have a screw on back. My god the pain when I put the first one in. I thought maybe the post was a bit big but the second earring got screwed into my ear and I couldn’t get it all the way through or out again without turning it like a screw.

I’ve had pierced ears for over forty years and have never had a problem.

Obviously, being earring you can’t return them. Awful design.

Are you sure they are supposed to go through yours ears as that doesn’t sound right? My Mum did not have her ears pierced so she had clip ons ,one set had screw backs which just held the earring in place .

Or take the US plug off and replace it with a UK plug, we had to do this with a lot of European plugs when we returned from Germany.

Absolutely dont do this. The wires in US products are rated for 110volts. The UK system sends 240volts down the wires of anything that is plugged into it. If you plug a US only product into a normal UK socket without an adaptor, you might melt the wiring and cause a fire. Your feet would certainly get warm quickly though 🤣

UK shaving sockets are half UK power..which is why its safe to use them in this circumstance

I love Black Honey - have been wearing it for years.

there might be a couple of posters on this thread willing to sell you a cheap second hand one!

Have you measured the cover? Because king size is different across brands.
Even with Christy the king size can be 10cm different.

My own kingsize quilt is 225 x220, yet most covers come at 200 x220 annoyingly.

The Linen Cupboard has loads of non-standard sizes for duvets and sheets - only place I can get ones for our non-standard Warren Evans bed

AndThereSheGoes · 03/01/2025 19:10

We had the Cooks fish pie for Christmas Eve. Large one for 5 of us cost £39. Tasted of absolutely nothing. Not even potato let alone fish.

AndThereSheGoes · 03/01/2025 19:13

Pleased with the Waitrose Stilton with 20% off. Much nicer than Tescos.
M&S mince pies were lovely closely followed by AsDa extra special ones.
M&S Christmas pudding was really nice too.

If it's the little square one, I think it's designed for the sandwich thins rather than normal bread?

Nope, it’s the bread one!

Sorry, quoting my own post as too late to edit, but if anyone can recommend a duvet that’s between a double and king sized one I’d really appreciate it.

If you’re handy with a sewing machine (or know someone who is), turn it inside out, mark, pin and sew a straight line where the seam would be to make it the right size for your duvet, then turn right way around.

You could mark and pin it with the duvet inside or on top of the inside out cover. Leave a little room for the excess material inside and to actually get the cover on.

Waitrose Brown Butter Mince Pies ( after I saw rave reviews)
The pastry tasted odd , lardy , Too thick . I ate 1 and DH had the rest .

Yalz · 03/01/2025 19:50

Tape dispensers - heavy duty ones by Rapesco like this one and this one are regularly recommended on the MN Christmas bargains threads, especially when they reduce in price. Standard rolls of sellotape (all brands I've tried) fit on them.

My last one was £3.25. I have one upstairs and one downstairs now, they are so useful.

Bought a couple of sweaters from M&S in their much touted 'like cashmere' Air Yarn. Yes, they're beautifully soft but are already bobbling terribly. Haven't even washed them yet! Okay, so they were only £30 each, but it's still very poor quality.

The M&S Cashmillon range was like this , okay to begin with then bobbly .

Can I add to the Aldi disappointment? We had friends coming on Christmas Eve and I bought a box of Aldi mini pies from their party food range. They were well within date but every time I opened the fridge there was a strange smell. There was nothing else it could have been, as I hadn't got any other Christmas food, so in the end I got them out and cooked them the weekend before. DH has a cast iron stomach so was designated taster and said they were fine although nothing special (and suffered no I'll effects) so we worked out it was the actual packaging that was causing the smell. I've never had that bed and it was very off putting.

Was it a packaging with recycled paper carton? Companies now use more and more recycled paper, as outer packaging also for pizzas or when the inner packaging is thinner. Recyled paper is good in principle, but depending on what it was made out of, it includes a lot of printed materials, and the colours and chemicals seem to stay in the final product. That can make recycled carton smell funny. Sometimes it's the colours which they use for printing.

Some magazines are now using recycling paper and environmentally friendlier ink, and have started to smell very weird.
That's unfortunate, as recycling as such is good, but the results with paper are sometimes not convincing.

@BeachHutsAndDeckchairs sending these links, admittedly though, have no techy clue personally!! Hope it may point you in the right direction.

You need a queen sized duvet 😊

@blahblonk the original crumpet is mainly meant for sandwich thins not actual bread if that's of any help xxx

Swarovski diamond studs in their sale. I’ve been wearing them for two weeks and earlier to take had to take them out after my right piercing hole became inflamed. I took the stud out and the silver has literally rubbed away already leaving the metal underneath. Isn’t Swarovski meant to be a quality brand?

Pistachio Lindor. Bought some when I saw them in Tesco and wasn't impressed. Yet the Irish Cream ones - yummy.

They taste like they’ve never even been in the same room as a pistachio, so disappointing!

I'm so glad I read this! I actually said to dh "I'm beginning to wonder if I have covid as these don't taste of anything" when I had one of these!

Does this happen with recycled clothes too? A few years ago when clothes first started using recycled fabrics I had a lovely dress from weekday and it stunk!!!

PandaChopChop · 03/01/2025 20:52

For anyone that asked (sorry I can't remember who) my sheets were from Matalan. Packaging went into the recycling so can't remember if I checked whether 100% cotton (which is what I normally buy). But they felt ok when I bought them!

They’d like you to think so.

The earrings just say rhodium plated. If they were silver or white gold underneath then they would be mentioning it. That they don’t implies they are base metal.

Dellaandthedealer · 03/01/2025 21:31

I cooked my mini beef Yorkshires from M&S in the little plastic cup tray, ( because that’s how I read it too) and they were fine. Tray didn’t melt at all, in fact I saved it because it looks useful!

in my experience when fabrics smell funny it's usually the colours they used. Some jeans from H&M I sent back because despite being brand new they smelled like from 5 years in a basement. But maybe other users have more information

I bought my son some Bluetooth headphones for Christmas from Asda. Wireless, with a usb charging cable and compact they were fab. Worked once and then didn’t ever work again. Light came on when charging but stopped connecting to Bluetooth. I returned them and got a gift card as I didn’t have the receipt. Also, Father Christmas got him a Roblox backpack but the zip broke after a couple of uses. Contacted Amazon and got a credit on my account.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/01/2025 22:12

I bought some George @Asda holly patterned sheets and pillowcases for DD .
100% brushed cotton ...very cosy , wash and dry , fit well.
But the background colour is beige-ey not white .
DD likes them and the rest of her winter bedding is grey /white
I bought them online , if I'd seen them IRL I might not have bought them.
