Was I rude to the waitress?

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 12:06

So we booked a table at all bar one
We were going for the tapas and cocktails
Now it's a 2 for 1 cocktail deal so we're getting 4 (2 each )and also 5 of the taps to share.
We walk in and it's probably 1/4 full.
She shows us to our table and it's a tiny 2 person table .
I ask "do you have a bigger table just we plan on having tapas and cocktails and there won't be room on her to move "
She rolled her eyes and took us to a bigger table.
The rest of the night she didn't look at me and you could tell she was annoyed.
Was I rude to ask to move tables?

@HospitalitySux

so out of interest how do YOU think Op should have handled the situation? You obviously think she got it all wrong and was rude. So do tell, what should she have done?

"Could we have a bigger table please?"
She could even have added on about wanting to order other stuff.
No need for the 'But I don't understand why we were allocated a table for 2' either here or at the time (if she did at the time). There's a simple explanation why. She booked it.

Not believing her perfectly reasonable request was so insulting that it would lead to being avoided all night by the waitress, far more likely that she was abrupt, passive aggressive and rude in her initial query and that's what will have led to it, or simply that waitress wasn't serving that section, which is far more likely.

Complaint to management at the eye rolling.

But really if OP was as polite as she insists in the interaction and the waitress was rude in return, why is she so bothered at that waitress 'avoiding' her? Isn't it better she didn't have to continue to be served by someone like that?

Flatulence · 02/01/2025 14:52

The request wasn't rude, though your manner and tone may have been - especially if you didn't say please.

ilovesooty · 02/01/2025 13:41

That response doesn't encourage me to believe you phrased your request particularly politely.

I thought the same thing.

Yes but especially at Christmas and in somewhere like an All Bar One anyone working as a waitress would have had to deal with drunk, abusive and rude customers so probably she was just sick of the job. I wouldn’t say anything, it as only and eye roll.

Even if she were sick of the job, she shouldn't take it out on other customers. I honestly wouldn't tolerate a waitress or shop assistant rolling their eyes as a response to my request. Years ago as a 16 year old I was trained by Marks & Spencer so maybe that has stuck with me. I've also been a teacher and headteacher so perhaps that's another reason for not accepting rude behaviour. 😄

SallyWD · 02/01/2025 15:00

Of course not

CurlewKate · 02/01/2025 15:13

So much depends on tone. It would certainly be possible for what you said to sound rude.

It is also entirely possible that her manner could be interpreted as rude when she didn't mean to be, and you over analysed it because you were uncertain about your attitude.

I wouldn't give it another thought, personally!

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 15:14

@HospitalitySux if you have some time on your hands maybe re read your first response back to me.
You were rude to me
With a attitude
You made your judgement about my manners and tone from the get go
Clearly looking for some sort of weird online argument
Anyway we are all strangers here so no harm done
Hope your relatives procedure goes well
There's more important things to life than tables and hospitality

but OP didn’t say that to the waitress…

Thanks everyone for your responses
I haven't lost any sleep over it
I was just curious to others opinions
I don't think I was rude 🤣
If anyone knew me in real life -I'm the most non controversial person going

Anyway happy new year ! Hope it's a good one for us all!

No but it’s heavily implied that it was what she thought at the time. Repeating it here just shows that she expects other people to have an expectation of her expectations as soon as they meet her.

Being allocated a table for two when a table for two has been booked isn’t something to then start protesting you don’t understand the reasoning about - because it’s perfectly clear.

You're the one been telling people to get another job, to get a grip and deciding how they perform in their job, oh and what they think for them 🤷🏼‍♀️

She's also the one who started a thread on a public forum to ask in the first place.

Going out on a limb here but it sounds like @HospitalitySux has had a particularly crap time in work recently and has decided to throw all their frustration at OP. Except the OP doesn't actually embody all the people who have pissed off HospitalitySux and the ranting is misplaced. HospitalitySux you seem to be putting yourself in a position of educating the OP and putting her in her place. I worked in hospitality too for nearly 20 years. Do you know when I knew it was time for people to leave the industry? (myself included) It was when they took the frustrations home with them and acted exactly as you are doing on here. You claim to not be at work so why are you using your well deserved time off to deal with other people's customers? Walk away and maybe look at a career change- I don't mean that cheekily. Leaving hospitality was the very best decision I made and sound like it'd be good for you too.

@OP no you weren't rude and your request was reasonable. It's impossible for us to say what the issue was for the server as we don't know what else was happening in their day I suppose but no you weren't rude.

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

peachystormy · 02/01/2025 15:29

a lot of people on this thread have got out of bed the wrong side this morning

OP I don't think u were rude to ask but the waitress was for rolling her eyes. End o discussion

Moonchildalltheway · 02/01/2025 15:34

If you speak to people in the same manner and tone as your posts on here then I am not surprised she was rude to you.

oh get a grip!
The place was 1/4 full
I asked for a table which was big enough for all the small plates /cocktails
You seem like you have a bad attitude
Maybe you need a new job

I'm not surprised to be allocated one.
My surprise was the fact moving to a bigger table was such an issue.
Not sure how we were meant to stack 6 plates ,4 cocktails on a tiny table,
I don't think asking to move was rude
Pretty common sense really

what are you talking about ?
Who mentioned "life changing trauma "
I asked to move
Once we moved I said thanks
Should I have kissed her feet ?

you clearly hate working in hospitality and think everyone who asks a simple request are rude or arseholes
If you don't want to do a particular job ...find another
Don't tar everyone with the same brush
Have a good day 👍

lack of manners and attitude?
I was polite
End of discussion

really ? I think with your attitude you would fit in well hun 😜

if someone is salty with me...I'm going to give the same back.

if you have some time on your hands maybe re read your first response back to me.

I bet she was rude. Look how she keeps speaking to people on this thread

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 15:49

@Moonchildalltheway the only people who I have responded to in any sort of "attitude " were the people who were rude to me.

Which is why I added the bit on brackets (if she did) I was referring to what she put on this thread as well.

But anyway I'm heading in to get the invalid shortly and I'll go back to my job of 10 years and 2 promotions tomorrow bearing in mind how apparently bad I am at it!

Happy New Year all!

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 15:52

Also yes I did say please
I also said Thankyou
No I didn't tip -I didn't think i had service to tip
And yes if I have nice service or just simply polite service -I will tip
As long as the tips are in cash direct to staff
I don't agree with the service charge on a bill
As you don't know if they go to the staff who deserve it ...

Bogginsthe3rd · 02/01/2025 15:52

OP's responses suggest she may have had a bad or entitled attitude to the waiter.

Pointing out your repeatedly rude comments isnt a bee in my bonnet 😅 I just find it amusing you wanted a discussion about whether you were rude or not, then said end of discussion when people wanted to discuss it and was repeatedly rude to another poster throughout.

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 15:54

@NameChanger91736 sorry you must not have seen the person who was rude to begin with -and I simply replied to them (with the same attitude they gave me )
Anyway I'm bored now
Have a good day
