Was I rude to the waitress?

So we booked a table at all bar one
We were going for the tapas and cocktails
Now it's a 2 for 1 cocktail deal so we're getting 4 (2 each )and also 5 of the taps to share.
We walk in and it's probably 1/4 full.
She shows us to our table and it's a tiny 2 person table .
I ask "do you have a bigger table just we plan on having tapas and cocktails and there won't be room on her to move "
She rolled her eyes and took us to a bigger table.
The rest of the night she didn't look at me and you could tell she was annoyed.
Was I rude to ask to move tables?

Oh FFS. She asked for a different table, not a kidney.

And she also wasn't going to suffer life changing trauma from being allocated a table for two in the first instance, or using common manners when realising the table wasn't going to be suitable and asking for a different one.

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 13:15

@HospitalitySux what are you talking about ?
Who mentioned "life changing trauma "
I asked to move
Once we moved I said thanks
Should I have kissed her feet ?
Also I booked a 2 table because it asks how many people -there were 2 people
It doesn't mean the table is big enough for all of what we ordered.
The table would fit 2 people if it was drinks only
Not food and drinks

@HospitalitySux I'm not surprised to be allocated one.
My surprise was the fact moving to a bigger table was such an issue.
Not sure how we were meant to stack 6 plates ,4 cocktails on a tiny table,
I don't think asking to move was rude
Pretty common sense really

But you keep saying you didn't see the sense in being allocated a table of 2 when that's what you booked?
You were moved when you asked to be because it wasn't suitable for what you wanted. The request wasn't unreasonable (as I said in my first post) and yes, eye rolling isn't a good response, however you aren't coming across as treating her with any respect either, depending on your tone (which I suspect wasn't great) and with a lack of manners yourself, and especially if you were bleating on about not seeing the sense in being allocated a table for 2 when the place wasn't full while it was happening.

She was extremely rude and I would have asked her why she was rolling her eyes at a perfectly reasonable request. I can't stand rude service in shops or restaurants and I don't tolerate it. I'm very polite and speak quietly but I always call it out.

When I was a student I worked in shops (like many of us) so I know it's easy to be polite to even the most difficult customers.

Yes but especially at Christmas and in somewhere like an All Bar One anyone working as a waitress would have had to deal with drunk, abusive and rude customers so probably she was just sick of the job. I wouldn’t say anything, it as only and eye roll.

Ihatemondays1962 · 02/01/2025 13:20

Asking to move table was not rude. Not saying please when you asked was rude.

Love that!
Who mentioned kissing of feet? Is that part of common manners towards other people?

Trying to call me out on being over dramatic by responding in kind. Good job 🤣.

Scaredandalonepls · 02/01/2025 13:21

Depends on the tone of voice and how you asked OP. No one here can tell you.

Pinkywoo · 02/01/2025 13:21

HospitalitySux · 02/01/2025 12:45

I mean no you weren't rude to ask to be moved. A please might have been a decent addition to the sentence though.

Although that said, us hospitality workers surely need to understand our place as second class citizens who don't garner enough respect for simple manners.

And if you book a table for 2 then that's what you are allocated. No great mystery there unless you decide it's got to be a nice little drama where hospitality staff are picking on poor old you.

I'm at a complete loss as to why hospitality is struggling for people to work in the industry. That one's a complete mystery 🤔🙄

Edited

Give over, I was in hospitality for 25 years and OP's request was perfectly reasonable.

Maybe that's why the waitress wouldnt look at her for the rest of the night. Fuming Op hadnt kissed her feet

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 13:23

My tone was polite as it always is
I used to work in hospitality myself years ago so know how rubbish it can be

@HospitalitySux you clearly hate working in hospitality and think everyone who asks a simple request are rude or arseholes
If you don't want to do a particular job ...find another
Don't tar everyone with the same brush
Have a good day 👍

Eye rolling is totally unacceptable from anyone working in a customer service position. I would have reported that.

Lazy argument at being confronted with your own lack of manners and attitude and not liking it.
As I've said, I'm not at work but on an anonymous forum, so what I say has no bearing on my suitability for my employment.

You're the one been telling people to get another job, to get a grip and deciding how they perform in their job, oh and what they think for them 🤷🏼‍♀️

God no, wouldn't work in Bar One for twice what I earn now! Or spend time in one.
Customer base is generally not great 🤣

Why did you title your post was I rude to the waitress? if your now replying to posters saying I was polite. End of discussion

You wanted a discussion about whether you were rude or not?

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 13:39

@HospitalitySux really ? I think with your attitude you would fit in well hun 😜

I wouldn't really, I'm polite and use my manners regardless of who I'm talking to.
Sounds like Bar One doesn't have an abundance of that in either direction 😳🤣

It would appear I've gotten under your skin here with some of my observations from what you've posted.

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 12:50

@HospitalitySux oh get a grip!
The place was 1/4 full
I asked for a table which was big enough for all the small plates /cocktails
You seem like you have a bad attitude
Maybe you need a new job

That response doesn't encourage me to believe you phrased your request particularly politely.

ohdingo · 02/01/2025 13:43

@ilovesooty if someone is salty with me...I'm going to give the same back.
I asked the girl to move tables nicely
She had a rubbish attitude back
Like I said she was probably busy over Christmas but the eye roll was a bit ott

OP posts:
Boarb · 02/01/2025 13:44

No, you weren't rude. She was.

It really doesn't matter one bit that she might have been working over the Christmas period and it might have been busy, or someone else was drunk, or whatever.

She's paid to deal politely with customer requests and yours was easily accommodated because other tables were available. It doesn't even matter your reasons, you were perfectly fine to have asked.

Some people just think they can get away with providing poor service or that they can't really be expected to work hard at work!

OP is not coming across well in her posts at all. Embarrassing for her really
