Do you regularly have an afternoon nap?

And if so what time and for how long?

Considering trying to make this a habit, as insomnia is taking its toll

Never go to bed hungry

Portakalkedi · 01/01/2025 19:18

I sometimes try but find it difficult. I'm past retirement age and think it's something I should be doing but maybe it's not for everyone

Squidthing · 01/01/2025 19:19

20 mins no longer at around 2 pm ideally if I can, it's not essential.

I nap with my toddler at 1.30pm ish for 1-2 hours, although some days I don't manage to nod off, but I have that down time. I tend to go to sleep 2am-7am although it's not insomnia, I've just always gone to bed late. I will probably stop naps once DD2 stops her naps.

We sleep in my bed with a duvet, I wouldn't want to nap on a sofa.

NewMe2024 · 01/01/2025 20:17

Frequently yes. Usually straight after lunch for 20-30 mins, sometimes a little later, but always between about 2-4pm. I’m an early riser and naps are a game changer for me in terms of energy. Personally I think its a very healthy habit.

I love a lunchtime nap. I often find that my brain feels tired and over full by 1pm, I have a stupidly busy job and will bounce from Teams meeting to Teams meeting, trying to get stuff done while on the calls so constantly multi-tasking and trying to find 2 mins to run to the toilet or grab a coffee.

So I block out 1pm-2pm wherever possible and use 30 mins of it to just doze on the sofa under my heated blanket and not think about anything.

Yep, I do it the same way and for the same reasons. When wfh first became normal I used to feel a bit guilty about this, but now I actively build it in and think it’s brilliant.

aCatCalledFawkes · 01/01/2025 20:18

Absolutely not unless on the floor. I do do a lot of exercise though and would rather take a walk to wake me up than a sleep in the middle of the day.

Cherrysherbet · 01/01/2025 20:31

I nap probably five times per week. I start work at 6am, finish at 2pm. It’s a very physical job. I usually nap for an hour 3-4pm.
I always go up to bed. I love my naps. I still sleep well at night. If I don’t nap, then I start to nod off early evening, and I hate that feeling.

delphinedupont · 01/01/2025 20:33

No, I just can’t switch off during the day. When I was pregnant and then when the babies were little and I was so very tired I dropped off for an hour when they had a nap but I don’t seem to have a daytime off button now.

spuddy4 · 01/01/2025 20:48

If I'm working I do. I'm up at around 3-3:30am for work so I wouldn't make it through the day without one.

paulhollywoodshairgel · 01/01/2025 20:58

I couldn't survive some days without my naps. I have a chronic illness though which wipes me out some days.

Tumbleweed101 · 01/01/2025 21:03

No, because I'm usually at work but I definitely have a sleepy point in the afternoon where work feels more exhausting and I could happily rest, usually around 2-3pm.

Mysterian · 01/01/2025 21:16

Yes. I've got Very Long Covid. I need to get some rest in the day. I got some napping tips from the specialist. "Not more than an hour or it will affect your night time sleep". I try to stick to that.

CoodleMoodle · 01/01/2025 21:30

I have a nap every day, between 15-30mins. I enjoy it so much. The only issue is when I can't have one for whatever reason, I really feel it that day. But it doesn't interfere with my night sleep at all, in fact sometimes I find it harder to fall asleep if I haven't had my nap!

jhar · 01/01/2025 21:37

Ok, so new year, confession time.

After nearly dying in year one with twins, no joke. Not even close. Now there are four of them, so I would guess this has been me for maybe five years.

This is my routine and will be for as long as I can get away with it.

Everyone small goes to bed at 7. By 9 everyone is still awake and I am finished running up and down.

10 some are asleep some are in with me, I tend to then be up and down all night, on a good night get 2-3 solid.

I'm up at 5, dogs walked jobs done. Older two to primary, one to nursery. I work four week mornings, baby toddler comes. Little two home, we nap 1230-230 then pick up twins. They are only half day Friday Scotland, so we all nap Friday Saturday Sunday. I work weekend mornings with all of them.

One bed, all a big squishy cuddle. 🥰 it's my favourite part of the day. We do lots of other things but this story and nap time is protected.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/01/2025 22:33

I quite often do, maybe 3 times a week. I lie on the sofa and set my phone alarm for 30-40 minutes max, or I go into a deep sleep and wake up feeling groggy. I don’t sleep well anyway (partly an age thing) but TBH having a nap - or not - makes no difference to how well I sleep at night.

OurDreamLife · 01/01/2025 22:35

I never nap. I would have to be very unwell to need one.

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 01/01/2025 22:48

This thread is making me feel better. A couple of times a week I will have an afternoon nap. I sleep appallingly and if I’m tired I fall asleep wherever I am. No point trying to fight it so it’s easier to have a nap. 20 mins if I’m not too tired but if I’m really zonked I’ll have a full hour. Might feel a bit grotty the moment I wake but an hour or so later I feel so much better so it’s worth doing.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/01/2025 23:02

Never, but I always did when I had a baby or a baby and a toddler!

watchuswreckthemic · 01/01/2025 23:05

I am so good at naps I really want to put it on my CV. 12 mins is my best achievement so far to feel refreshed.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/01/2025 23:05

Looking back, I would never have coped without it. When I went back to work, I had to make do with very early nights.

Purplequestionmark · 01/01/2025 23:08

I nap during the day when I'm home so in my regular work day routine no, weekends and holidays yes, I need it my brain feels like it has shut down if I don't nap, it is also something I wish I didn't do, I have done it since young, I am also a terrible sleeper regardless of nap or not.
I personally think it has a lot to do with boredom and my adhd as to why I nap.

ShesNotACowShesAFox · 01/01/2025 23:14

Yes. I WFH and often take a nap on my lunch hour. I can highly recommend it! I always make sure I wake before 3, otherwise I struggle to sleep at night

namechangeevery · 01/01/2025 23:20

I worked a 12 hour shift today and was up at 5am . I had a nap about 3pm at work..about 15 mins . Feel that I deserved it !
At home, I do occasionally nap on the sofa for an hour if not busy!

Missreginafalange · 01/01/2025 23:33

Love a day time nap, can sleep anywhere and could do 10 mins or a couple of hours. Still sleep at night 😁
