Do you regularly have an afternoon nap?

And if so what time and for how long?

Considering trying to make this a habit, as insomnia is taking its toll

Most weekend afternoons, about an hour. I tend to get sleepy after eating. Although we've just had a lovely roast for dinner and I know I'll be dozing in about 20 mins. It's a wee treat to myself and does not affect my sleep in any way.

USAUSAUSA · 01/01/2025 15:40

I’d love to. I love a nap. Alas I work full time in an office environment so not that easy!

Sortalike · 01/01/2025 15:44

I have a 30 minute lunchtime nap a couple of times a week especially in the winter - energy levels are zero at the moment.

I find a nap makes me feel sick and bad tempered when I wake up. I used to get a 3pm slump and feel sleepy but have been taking magnesium which has fixed it . A walk might be more useful to tire him out for bedtime?

IdaClair · 01/01/2025 15:50

No matter how tired or sick I am I cannot sleep in the daytime or anywhere other than a bed.

I haven’t had a nap since toddlerhood.

I wish I could, they sound nice.

Snowmanscarf · 01/01/2025 15:51

Only when poorly (and today’s nap was rudely interrupted with dog being sick!).

GroovyChick87 · 01/01/2025 16:03

I do if I need one. Sometimes I won't go fully asleep but just a doze can be very restorative.

Sinkintotheswamp · 01/01/2025 16:05

Never, I'm 50.

ObtuseMoose · 01/01/2025 15:09

I never nap, I sleep well at night and that's enough for me. The thought of going to bed for a sleep in the afternoon actually fills me with dread.

Me too, I'd feel seriously fed up actually getting into bed and going to sleep when it's day light but lots of woman I work with do this and I can't help but think how did this is to me

notatinydancer · 01/01/2025 16:08

Yes when I'm off work.
About 2-3 for an hour ish.

olderbutwiser · 01/01/2025 16:09

I am currently in bed having my pre-nap winddown, which includes a few Mumsnet threads. When I retired I had an ambition to have a nap every day but to my irritation I find I only need the occasional nap. Right, 😴

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/01/2025 16:09

Sometimes. My best naps are on the sofa, with the tv playing in the background. I usually get anywhere from 20-50 minutes then.

Occasionally go to bed to nap, and can sleep for 1-1.5 hours but those naps tend to be a deeper sleep so I often feel worse afterwards. Plus at this time of year I find it weird going to sleep in daylight and waking from a nap in darkness.

I'm not a great sleeper though, and naps can affect my ability to sleep at bedtime so tend to only do them when I'm on leave from work. DH sleeps almost every afternoon on his days off, easily sleeps for 2-4 hours and then goes to bed and sleeps more no bother (although granted, goes to bed a lot later than me).

BoobyDazzler · 01/01/2025 16:09

Never, I’d love to!

DH can snooze at the drop of a hat. I am so jealous of his skills.

unlikelychump · 01/01/2025 16:10

I just had a lovely one in the bath! Most days this holiday I have had a nap. I love it.

KnitFastDieWarm · 01/01/2025 16:14

@endofthecorridoor what dose of magnesium do you take? I’m thinking of giving it a go as I get terrible mid-afternoon exhaustion. Did it take long to feel an effect?

Nameynameynamename · 01/01/2025 16:17

I do because I often finish work late and still have to get up for the kids. I find if I sleep in bed I sleep for two long and too deeply so it messes up my night time sleeping. 30 mins to an hour on the sofa and no later than about 2pm is ideal

FranksInvisibleLlama · 01/01/2025 16:21

No, despite being very sleep deprived. Most days I am so tired that if I sat down at any point , I would fall asleep, but I don’t have time and feel worse than if I just drag myself through until bedtime.

Extrememindgames · 01/01/2025 16:23

Yes it’s part of protecting my MH I had to give up work a year ago and have made sure every day I have a nap after lunch or relax and watch something. I have a lot of fatigue due to medical issues too and it helps to manage that

Thistledowner · 01/01/2025 16:26

Yes, always have done, I’m 41

I put ear plugs in, get into bed, set an alarm for between 10-40 minutes, depending on the day. Setting an alarm is essential otherwise I can’t relax.

I have to be very warm to sleep so I put electric blanket on.

I try not to sleep later than 3ish

A quick nap before doing the school run makes me a MUCH better parent!!

hopeishere · 01/01/2025 16:26

Very rarely. I always feel really sick when I wake up so it's not worth it. I struggle to get to sleep at the best of times.

My mum had a nap every day when she was older. My dad got up very early for work and went to bed for an hour or so when he came home.

DandyDinmont · 01/01/2025 16:27

I do whenever I can. For about an hour from 4, in bed. Absolutely love it.

wavingfuriously · 01/01/2025 16:28

Houseplanter · 01/01/2025 14:59

Sorry another question... do you manage to nod off on the sofa or do you actually go to bed?

I find sleeping impossible unless I lie down so would have to go to bed, and then I probably wouldn't want to get up again.

oops

I think it was fairly quick it's one big capsule per day just the recommended dose I take a few things so it fitted in and I do stick to it every single day. It's hard to put your finger on something that stopped (tiredness) but looking back it's clear I have a lot more energy in the afternoon now and never feel sleepy.

wavingfuriously · 01/01/2025 16:30

I try not to because it's a long 2 hour one! But after strenuous exercise often sit reading on the sofa in a warm room and doze off unintentionally.. always tends to happen in Winter, never in Summer

I wish I could...I feel like I'd benefit greatly but sadly my boss would not approve! I'm very much in the 'for' camp though...I'd love to be in a country that embraces the 'siesta' 😍

This reminds me of a place I worked in years ago where an HR manger told the shocked new HR director that no, they couldn’t turn the small office next door into a meeting room because “the finance director likes to use it for his afternoon nap”🤣

I wonder where the FD is now…
