Do you regularly have an afternoon nap?

And if so what time and for how long?

Considering trying to make this a habit, as insomnia is taking its toll

I love a lunchtime nap. I often find that my brain feels tired and over full by 1pm, I have a stupidly busy job and will bounce from Teams meeting to Teams meeting, trying to get stuff done while on the calls so constantly multi-tasking and trying to find 2 mins to run to the toilet or grab a coffee.

So I block out 1pm-2pm wherever possible and use 30 mins of it to just doze on the sofa under my heated blanket and not think about anything.

JohnTheRevelator · 01/01/2025 16:33

Would be absolutely pointless me trying to have a short day time nap, much as I would sometimes like to. I suffer from chronic insomnia on and off (mainly related to pain from various health problems) and it can take me up to 3 hours to fall asleep. I'd spend so long trying to fall asleep for a nap, that I'd have no time left for the actual nap!

MajorCarolDanvers · 01/01/2025 16:34

Yes but it contributes to my nighttime insomnia and I’m trying to stop napping

I often do, anywhere from 25-45 minutes.

MrsMontyD · 01/01/2025 16:36

I never napped until cancer treatment, hormone therapy and medical menopause.

I find I sometimes need a nap at lunchtime, especially when I'm not sleeping well at night, thankfully I work from home and my boss understands that a nap means I can be productive for the rest of the day. I always set an alarm on my phone and I'm usually awake before it goes off.

For me a nap when I need one is a reasonable adjustment, and I'm still very productive.

Normallynumb · 01/01/2025 16:37

I do between 2-3 every day
However I don't work due to disability so my time is my own really.
I don't always sleep, but it helps to rest my joints
I'm 60 now, but have done this for decades so not age related!

Maddy70 · 01/01/2025 16:48

Most days

Jolietta · 01/01/2025 16:49

Every day.

Absolutely vital for my health.

Newmum738 · 01/01/2025 16:50

Yes! Both me & DH whenever we can. Weekends and holidays are definite. Love a daytime nap!

AlteredStater · 01/01/2025 16:52

Most days, between 1-3 p.m. Chronic health issues mean I'm always tired. Always go to bed, wouldn't be able to sleep elsewhere.

Delatron · 01/01/2025 16:53

I don’t think naps are recommended if you have insomnia unfortunately. If you have no issues with sleep then it’s fine. Which seems the wrong way round!

My sleep is terrible but I’ll rarely nap. I do have ‘quiet time’ on the sofa with the dog some afternoons to summon energy for all the evening ferrying around/cooking etc.

Comedycook · 01/01/2025 16:54

Yes I do. My ideal bedtime is 9.30pm but I have teens and I can't go to sleep until I know they're in bed...this means I don't get to sleep until 11pm at least. I'm up at seven on a normal weekday and it's just not enough sleep for me so I nap most days.

Sallymaclennane · 01/01/2025 17:02

I take naps for about an hour on my days off and I find it benefits me cognitively. My working days are long, and on WFH days, I also take a nap, albeit a shorter one.
As a child, I used have a nap after school, my grandparents with whom I lived were huge proponents of its benefit.
Google biphasic sleeping OP. It's fascinating

GiddyRobin · 01/01/2025 17:04

Once in a blue moon, if I'm on my period or generally under the weather. I aim for 20 min power naps because any longer than that, and I'm lethargic. I've got awful insomnia and night-sleep is quite up and down, so I'd love a regular nap. Sadly, my body usually says no. It wants to be busy. 😂

BettyBardMacDonald · 01/01/2025 17:08

I never napped when my dogs were alive as my spare time went to them.

Now they are gone and I work from home full time, i often use my lunch break for an hour lying on the bed. Probably should go for a walk instead but I hate my job and need to tune out.

can't you get another dog or rescue one?🐶🐕

BettyBardMacDonald · 01/01/2025 17:43

@wavingfuriously
I'd love to; my boys were rescues and really added to my life. But I'm 61, trying to figure out retirement, and my sister has advanced cancer so I'm not sure how much she will need me in coming years. Everything is too up in the air.

Lavenderandbrown · 01/01/2025 18:37

I have to be warm also to nap and I follow the sun if possible choosing my napping spot based on the sun coming in. I get in bed by 9pm and never have trouble falling and staying asleep. I do have a physical job which also requires alot of talking. However give me a coffee/ coke/ or something caffeinated after 12 noon and I can’t fall asleep Sleep never prevents me from sleeping but caffeine sure does

Pyua · 01/01/2025 18:39

I wish I could but I can’t nap for just an hour I end up switching alarms off without fully realising and then sleeping for hours and fucjibg up my sleep schedule

Hell yeah!!!

can’t tell you how long 🙊

too long 😂

bellocchild · 01/01/2025 18:57

I did when the children were tiny, and when I had a half-day off from teaching. It made up for broken nights and heavy-duty days...

MuggleMe · 01/01/2025 19:04

Yes, at the weekend after lunch for an hour or two on one of the days, and if I'm knackered from doing kids/work/kids I sometimes can't help but to zonk out for 30 minutes at about 5.30.

Microgal · 01/01/2025 19:06

No but I get about 8.5-9hrs sleep most nights

Zippedydodah · 01/01/2025 19:08

Only if I’m ill.

NancyJoan · 01/01/2025 19:11

Only at the weekends, or when I’m on hols. Usually an hour or so, at about 2pm. I have to have a cover over me, and it’s better if I get into bed and shut the curtains, but on the sofa is okay.
