Trail Hunting or Fox Hunting?

wantmorenow · 01/01/2025 09:28

Just read a random pop up post in Facebook about hunting with hounds in the UK which I naively thought had been banned. I am shocked and quite amazed at my own ignorance. I genuinely didn't realise this still goes on and despite the law banning hunting. There is footage of the fox being pursued and the data shared is an eye opener.

@twistyizzy

Diddums. It's perfectly fine for me to protest but I don't and I don't take my kids to them either because of the risk that it presents.

What are you doing and the people who claim to 'just be trail hunting' doing in regards to the cretins in their community that are not legally trail hunting? What are they doing about those, or is it a case that you just don't give a fuck?

Is their imagination so lacking that they cannot teach their children to become better riders, sample differing terrain and to enjoy their ponies without being on any kind of hunt due to them knowing full well that there are animals being killed 'accidentally' on such trails? Or do you again, just not give a fuck.

AlertCat · 01/01/2025 11:24

Can we agree that nobody should bring violence to a protest?

That said, it seems pretty clear that hunts do routinely break the laws around riding, dogs, and hunting animals, so people trying to say they don’t seem to be naive at best. As I said above, my rural county has a dedicated police officer to liaise with the hunts about their behaviour, and I can’t imagine they would do that if the hunts could be trusted to behave legally on their own.

The problem is the crown prosecution service who find it difficult to convict illegal foxhunts even when presented with very clear evidence.

That'd be all the foxhunting barristers and judges.

Can I ask why terrier men go on trail hunts? I'd really like to know what the terriers are required for...

twistyizzy · 01/01/2025 10:56

The majority of people who hunt don't want to hunt fixes, that's why they go trail hunting. For these law abiding followers is it acceptable to be assaulted physically and verbally with no proof of them doing anything?
You are saying it is acceptable to pull kids from horses before a meet has started and where that child has never participated in chasing a live fox?

You don’t know the difference between drag hunting and trail hunting then? I should think trail hunting is exactly what someone might do if they wanted to get away with killing foxes

aodirjjd · 01/01/2025 11:35

Hunt sabs are also against hare coursing, it’s just a lot harder to interrupt those as they don’t tend to advertise when they are meeting given they are illegal and if the hunt sabs knew they were happening they can just call the police. They attend hunts to try and disrupt them and film evidence of illegal hunting.

If a hunter gets punched i imagine it generates from the hunters trying to get rid of the hunt sabs because they don’t like being filmed or their dogs being distracted by hunt sabs and then an argument ensues and someone gets punched. From what I’ve seen they give as good as they get. Hunt sabs as a group want to try and come across as “clean” because they are normally filming as much as they can and want to be able to use the footage for police.

Id love to see the evidence of these hunt sabs pulling children of horses or hurting dogs. The hunt sabs I have met are fierce animal lovers. I’m sure a lot of hunt sabs will do something which you might view as stupid like stand in horses way and make it turn suddenly which could hurt it but I’ve never heard of them hitting horses or dogs. Unlike horse riders who whip horses as standard and those who breed and own dogs for hunting who will shoot them when they aren’t useful anymore as they don’t make good pets.

I imagine criminal damage of vechicles happens by hunt sabs and I wouldn’t condone that. But the idea that they are regularly pulling children of horses is just silly.

Oh come on! That's disingenuous and you know it! Aniseed or animal piss? You're dragging a scent either way - and randomly, where as if by chance, oh my, you might find a stray, unexpected fox...

(Sorry, not you Carobyblobs, who you are responding to!)

CarobyBlobs · 01/01/2025 11:42

Drag hunting is where they follow a human runner, with a synthetic or a human scent. Trail hunting is done with animal scents so there are a lot more “oops” moments.

id be interested to see videos of sabs attacking children at a hunt - it apparently happens all the time so there must be lots of evidence.

I have seen videos of hounds chasing foxes, sabs taking control of hounds when the huntsmen are nowhere to be seen, terriermen removing fences so the hunt can keep chasing the fox, a hound being hit by a car when it ran across a main road (why was the trail laid near a main road?), uncontrolled hounds killing cats, chasing calves, hunting through thick patches of brambles where a runner couldn’t possibly go (so there would be no trail), and bagged foxes running for their lives. A bagged fox is one that has been deliberately released for the hounds to chase.

CarobyBlobs · 01/01/2025 11:44

If anyone wants to follow a hunt for a jolly good day out then they should find a “clean boots” one. Trail hunting is a smokescreen that can’t be defended

It's an excuse for sad little people, angered at the fact their lovely, wholesome pastime of allowing their trained hounds to rip foxes and their cubs to pieces was banned, to wear their silly red-coated uniforms and pretend their cocks are bigger than they are, to hoodwink the rest of the country into believing they're really only 'trail hunting' and it's reaaaaaallllly not their fault if a rogue hound catches the scent of a real fox and rips it to fuck. I'd like to these cretins being chased by hounds trained in hunting cunts. But we can wish.

Bloody well said!👏👏👏
The League Against Cruel Sports and other animal welfare organisations have clear evidence that illegal fox hunting is still going on.
I just don't understand how participants can see this as remotely ok, let alone great fun, along with dog-fighting, cock-fighting, bull-fighting and other so-called blood "sports". Despicable. I won't even refer to them as "human".
Yes, @namechangeGOT, I too would love to see these participants put in the same position as the animals involved, and the roles reversed. Bastards😡

aodirjjd · 01/01/2025 11:48

As balance I just googled hunt sabs hurting horses to see of any stories in the news. Unsurprisingly didn’t find any. Found stories of hunts endangering their own horses by riding at sabs though. Real animal lovers there.

Yes, it still goes on, unfortunately.
Under the guise of trail hunting.
Hunting with dogs is illegal but barely anything is ever done / will ever be done because those who should be doing something about it are actually friends with the rich elite who partake in this disgusting 'sport' or are actually quite partial to taking part in it themselves. Basically.
That's the British justice system for you.

HonorHaymaker · 01/01/2025 11:55

Well, the New Year's Day hunt has just started next to our house and I've just messaged the sabs - let's hope they get here in time. Bastards!!

Godspeed to those sabs.

Tara336 · 01/01/2025 12:11

I have seen the videos that are mentioned above. The poor hound hit by a car and the sabs were the only people who cared., they stayed and comforted it. I used to ride and I live rurally but would never ever hunt it disgusts me. I was lucky enough to see fox cubs playing in a field a couple years ago as I was walking my dog, they were so engrossed in their game that they didn't notice me straight away, I felt so lucky to see that and it's something I will never forget. It's just a shame that someone else would see it differently and want to "accidentally" hunt them and watch as dogs tear it to pieces. There's not a lot of things that I will strongly voice my opinion on but hunting is disgusting and I have actively chosen to distance myself when I have come across pro hunting supporters as I just can't relate to a person that really thinks that's OK.

StormingNorman · 01/01/2025 12:12

It is.

CarobyBlobs · 01/01/2025 12:15

Oh the claims of sabs spraying things in hounds faces - never seen that either. They do carry citronella which they spray on the foxes trail to mask the scent of the fox and get the hounds off it.

they also carry whips because hounds are afraid of the sound of the whip crack and it can turn them off their course. Why would these happy hounds be afraid of a whip crack?

SummerGardenFlowers · 01/01/2025 12:26

I was never a seasoned hunter as I didn't like that they killed foxes, however a few years after the ban I very naively took my horse out hunting maybe 3 or 4 times, thinking we were following a man made trail. The first 3 times we had a great time with no evidence of seeing or catching any foxes because, ya know, "man made trail". On my 4th time out a fox was killed in front of me and that was it I never went again. It is a smokescreen for sure.

There are NO clean boot hunts anywhere near where I live (like within 200 miles!), and in my opinion the hunts have screwed themselves over through sheer arrogance! But as a rider I do wish they'd sort it out because the days when I went before I realised the truth were some of the most fun days riding that I've ever had and I'd love to do it again.

My Labrador would probably also be scared if a whip was cracked near her. Doesn’t prove anything 🙄

I've just seen a Hunt, about 60 riders and a big pack of dogs

Pat888 · 01/01/2025 14:11

Since the fox hunting ban the numbers of foxes has plummeted -farmers shoot them and if you’re naive enough to think they are killed humanely by a marksman than you are a mug.
I see lads out at night with spotlights on their vehicles hunting down foxes ,often before the spring lambing, trained marksman they ain’t.
There’s a handful of hound packs who trail hunt -leave them alone and find something else to complain about -as I said there are few foxes now thanks to do gooders banning hunting.

SeaDragon17 · 01/01/2025 14:13

When hounds die from crossing busy roads or railways tracks in full cry, is this because a trail was laid across them?

When hounds riot through private gardens and kill pets is that because a trail was laid through the gardens?

When hounds are lost down mine shafts and left is that because across countryside with open shafts was chosen as a great location to have horses ride over, and so a trail was laid past them?

When hunt staff and followers go out early in the morning in the autumn and encircle a copse to hold up the fox cubs that will be disturbed from their set in the copse and allow the new hounds to “train” us that needed for a trail hunt?

When packs are sent into dense brush or woodland is it very likely a trail was laid through them, given no man could easily get through nor horses follow the pack in?

Is fox urine used to lay the “trail” because there is no alternative? Or because it is exactly what’s needed to ensure a real hunt on a fox can happen?

Oh this old nonsense. Hunters like to play both sides of the coin. It’s either pest control or it isn’t.

Carouselfish · 01/01/2025 10:28

Would not at ALL be surprised that they still carry it on in Herefordshire. Since badger baiting goes on and the number of dead badgers and foxes on a single stretch of road is beyond the coincidental.
I would like to hammer home that it isn't a country people vs townie people issue. The majority of country people find it outdated, barbaric and indeed as a pp said, performed by a certain type of pathetic asshole with more pomp than intelligence.
I guess their mothers didn't love them enough as children.

Completely agree that it's not a town v country thing. Even putting aside the cruelty aspect, all the farmers I know around here hate the hunt, and are sick of them tresspassing on their land and wrecking their fields and hedges. The sheer arrogance and entitlement of these people, thinking that they can go wherever they want and damage whatever they like, and someone else (who is considerably less able to afford it) can clean up and pay for the mess, is off the charts.

Hunt sabs aren't kind cuddly people FYI. They purposely endanger the lives of riders, dogs and horses by setting wire traps etc. They verbally and physically threaten kids at meets

Gosh, there must be lots of video evidence then on SM, can you link?
