Mine was Car 67 by Driver 67. I bought it with a Boots gift voucher just after Christmas 1978. The B-side, an instrumental called Communications Breakdown (nothing to do with Led Zeppelin) is the superior track.

I think single was Axel F, but the first album I bought was Layla and other assorted love songs. The first tape album I got was a metal compilation double cassette called Protect the Innocent. CD first album was a Japanese import of a live Thunder album bought in my first week at uni (as I had been given a cd/ double tape boom box to take with me) from a funny little shop in Cardiff that had an incredible range of metal and advertised in Kerrang. Literally the only place I knew in Cardiff apart from my halls and the building for my course

Genetic Engineering Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

pointythings · 31/12/2024 13:05

I never bought singles.
First album was Architecture and Morality by OMD.

Allschoolsareartschools · 31/12/2024 13:09

Up the Junction by Squeeze, I got it from a newsagents that sold ex jukebox records so probably 1980.
It was on lilac vinyl & had the brilliant 'It's So Dirty' on the B side although I don't think my dm listened to the lyrics too closely as it wasn't really suitable for a 10 year old! I absolutely loved Glen Tilbrook & all the band's music.
I still love both tracks to this day & still go to see Squeeze whenever I can.

Tinseltuttifruitti · 31/12/2024 13:18

Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins. Still a favourite album even though I sold the CD to fund an overseas move 😍

Kylie & Jason - Especially For You

Airfixkitwidow · 31/12/2024 13:25

Electric Warrior by T Rex. I played that album over and over again.

MrsMoastyToasty · 31/12/2024 13:27

Bye Bye Baby by the Bay City Rollers.

I didn't even have to go to the shops to get it because my next door neighbour owned a record shop and brought it home for me.

filka · 31/12/2024 13:36

I never bought many singles, but one of the first was Black Night by Deep Purple

merryhouse · 31/12/2024 13:44

Karma Chameleon. Which I could have sworn was 2nd year but apparently didn't come out till 4th year.

(My mum did buy me Right Said Fred / Hole in the Ground when I had measles in 1977 but I don't think that counts.)

First album was Innocent Man.

Second single was The Final Countdown, second album Brothers in Arms.

Kylie Minogue when I was 8. I got a Walkman & the cassette for my birthday.

My first album was “Kylie” too! I think I was 8 also. I had a walkman for Christmas from my parents and my uncle bought me the cassette. I was also bought 3 blank cassettes so I could record songs from the radio on my mum’s cassette player. Happy times!

MrsMurphyIWish · 31/12/2024 14:05

My brother’s first single was “Jump” by Criss Cross. I remember that as he would blast it out on loop on his hi-fi.

JoanChitty · 31/12/2024 14:14

First album was Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. I am old.First single I remember at home was A windmill in old Amsterdam by Ronnie Hilton. We played it on the radiogram !

tinytemper66 · 31/12/2024 14:15

Eton Rifles by the Jam.

MrsMurphyIWish · 31/12/2024 14:15

@JoanChitty We would listen to that at my nan’s house!

Edit: “windmill”, not “tubular bells”.

earwiggoagain · 31/12/2024 14:41

Could it be forever David Cassidy 1972. God I adored that man!
❤️❤️❤️

Catname · 31/12/2024 14:49

The Bump by Kenny was my first single, and shortly afterwards, The Wombles Album.

MerryTraveller · 31/12/2024 14:49

Kylie Minogue's "I should be so Lucky" album from Woolworths on cassette. I went in to town on the bus with a neighbour 2 years older (I was probably 11), and I remember feeling so excited, and grown up and nervous. Amazing time.

LetMeGoogleThat · 31/12/2024 14:55

Nick Kershaw, the riddle -Single from Woolies.

NeedToKnow101 · 31/12/2024 14:57

Teardrop Explodes Reward or Passionate Friend as a 7 inch single.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 31/12/2024 14:59

Cassettes - kylie and Jason, used my Christmas money to play them in my new Walkman. Bloody loved that thing.

First vinyl was Take That and Party. Bought because there was supposed to be a signing session but it got cancelled at the last minute due to crowd safety. Still bitter about that one.

Growlybear83 · 31/12/2024 14:59

Mine was Woodstock by Matthew's Southern Comfort. I've still got it 😆
