Would you still be alive if you lived in the 16th century?

I would have died aged 7 from appendicitis. If not then childbirth or an infected tooth would have finished me off in my early 20's.

Died from breech twin delivery - or none delivery, so thank god for C section

rc22 · 30/12/2024 21:12

Possibly but wouldn't have been able to see a thing without modern glasses/contact lenses.

GiddyRobin · 30/12/2024 21:12

I'd have probably kicked the bucket in childbirth with my second. Forceps delivery and lost a lot of blood. DH would have been killed by a horse. The DC's would have been okay (up to now, anyway! Though coeliac disease would definitely have made the DC and I pretty uncomfortable.).

Thetruthfairy · 30/12/2024 21:12

Alive.. I think?? I had to have the injection to detach a placenta, so who knows. Otherwise, fine during all births. My mum called me 'the omen' .as a child - never ill, no days off school at all.
Sadly, my immune system is now average.

LisbonKid · 30/12/2024 21:12

Meningitis aged 5 in 1972, in fact a class mates brother did die in the same outbreak that year and another class mate has severely affected vision, we are so lucky we have our medical advances.

Whitedoves · 30/12/2024 21:12

I would probably have died from gastroenteritis as a child. If I survived that then I would have died in childbirth from placenta previa.

Hoppinggreen · 30/12/2024 21:12

I probably would have been burnt as a Witch for refusing to behave and shut up when men told me to.
Medically I would have died after having DD, the MW actually said to me when I was feeling awful after the birth and being wheeled into surgery "cheer up, you would have been dead 100 years ago"

Christmasrefridgerator · 30/12/2024 21:12

I think croup as a young child might have finished me off.
If not, then perhaps tonsillitis as a teenager.
If not then an ear infection in my 30s would have definitely got me, I've never been so I'll and it took lots of different antibiotics to kill that one off.

Also may have been burned or drowned for being a witch!(left handed)

Ha there really was no hope for me!!

No - I would have died giving birth.

Same and most of my friends too

Actually, good shout. I'm blind as a bat without glasses, so probably would have been flattened by a carriage. 😂

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 30/12/2024 21:13

I was born with the cord wrapped round my neck…so no

Arran2024 · 30/12/2024 21:13

I had a quinsy on my tonsils when I was 40 and that would have seen me off.

ShiftySquirrel · 30/12/2024 21:13

I might still be here.
I didn't have easy births, but survivable. I had measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox as a child and a hideous bout of flu as an adult but not hospitalised.

Nothing to say a nasty bacterial infection wouldn't carry me off though. Or any of the diseases that I've been vaccinated against.
And DC might not be so lucky.

FrangipaniBlue · 30/12/2024 21:14

I'd have died as a toddler from one of the many chest infections I had.

If not then, from appendicitis age 12.

GremlinDolphin4 · 30/12/2024 21:15

Interesting question! I would have died aged about 2 as my lungs collapsed due to bronchitis I think. I also had a low resistance to infection and had regular immunoglobulin injections.

If I’d survived that then I was majorly allergic (couldn’t breathe!) to horses and then I had a brain tumour aged 32 which would have really done for me in the 1600s!

User0311 · 30/12/2024 21:15

I'd have died twice giving birth if I didn't have the interventions I had!

OPKQ · 30/12/2024 21:15

Good chance of being alive.
Born with no drama.
Nothing medical of note in my childhood or adulthood.
one vaginal birth with no intervention.
one elective c section so not sure how that birth would have gone. There was no reason to think a vaginal birth would’ve done wrong medically for me or baby though.

annonymousse · 30/12/2024 21:15

I would've died at age 8 from an infection. I had survived that I would've died in childbirth.

Gulbekian · 30/12/2024 21:16

I might have died at 2 from an horrendous bout of Chicken Pox.
Or I might have died at 53 from an infected wisdom tooth.
And I also would not have had lots of the innoculations I have had so I might have died from measles or polio along the way.
Or influenza or the second wave of the Bubonic Plague might have got me.

But I'm really quite hardy on the whole so I'm going to go with yes 😁.

SemmaLina · 30/12/2024 21:16

Would probably have died in childbirth for blood loss , however if I’d survived that , I’d be dead from old age by now as I’m 64

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 30/12/2024 21:06

Back then they’d strangle you before lighting the bonfire. So it was your corpse that got burnt- preventing you from coming back from the dead and haunting them.

Jeez. What a time to be alive 😬

jolies1 · 30/12/2024 21:18

Tittat50 · 30/12/2024 20:55

How did women go along with having a child knowing what they did back then. How many poor women had no choice having sex with husbands and then pregnancy and felt terrified by the odds against them.
I would have wanted to avoid and preserve my life at all costs.

I must go research any stats on this, fascinating.

I wouldn’t change my life now but if I had lived in that era I would have definitely been hoping to be sent to a nunnery! It seems an eminently sensible choice to avoid a probably horrible, stinking husband, dying in childbirth or from syphilis or something. I’d be happy doing some embroidery.

Porkyporkchop · 30/12/2024 21:19

Anaphylactic shock for me , I would have gone from that defo

Depends what you are allergic to - if it’s peanuts you might have got lucky, I don’t think they arrived here till later!

AutoP1lot · 30/12/2024 21:22

I was almost born 3 months early.

If that hadn't finished me off the unidentified seizures when I was a few months old probably would've done.

Failing that, I'd have probably died from childbirth complications.

If by some miracle I'd come through that, my secondary breast cancer definitely would've got me by now.
