Would you still be alive if you lived in the 16th century?

I would have died aged 7 from appendicitis. If not then childbirth or an infected tooth would have finished me off in my early 20's.

I’ve been very fortunate with no major interventions but I only have one child. I’m 48 so I’d probably have had many many pregnancies by now in the 16 century and statistically one would have killed me.

Tittat50 · 30/12/2024 20:55

How did women go along with having a child knowing what they did back then. How many poor women had no choice having sex with husbands and then pregnancy and felt terrified by the odds against them.
I would have wanted to avoid and preserve my life at all costs.

I must go research any stats on this, fascinating.

Yes I would be but the pre cancerous cells I've just had removed would probably have killed me in a few years

violetcuriosity · 30/12/2024 20:57

Nah wouldn't have even made it out of my mum,l. A CT scan after I was born via emergency c-section showed an unusually narrow pelvis which would never have fit a baby through. If I'd have survived that there's been a few dodgy tonsillitis episodes, that have got worse as I've got older, that may have done it.

Allmarbleslost · 30/12/2024 20:57

I would have died in childbirth at 29.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 30/12/2024 20:58

I was six weeks premature, 4 pounds at birth, severely jaundiced,I wouldn't have lasted a week

Blablasheep · 30/12/2024 20:58

I would have died at age 4 from a bacterial infection that had spread to my heart.

lollylo · 30/12/2024 20:59

I’m severely shortsighted and have been since 10. Often wondered how I would have fared pre accessible correctional eyewear. Other than that nothing else would have killed me as yet - in my 50s. Though I don’t know if I would have got diseases I was vaccinated against.

mrsfollowill · 30/12/2024 20:59

I'd have died in my early 30's (along with with DS in utero) from appendicitis. DH would have been killed off shortly after anyway due to his ongoing condition that is easily managed with modern drugs. Although I suppose any of us could have gone early due to fevers out of control or needing antibiotics as kids.

user1471453601 · 30/12/2024 20:59

Take your pick.

I could/would have died multiple times from 18 months old (chest infection) many many such infections over the years.
I still get one every time I get a cold.
three go rounds with cancer.

But here I am 😁😁. Still telling those things to go fuck themselves. Medical science has saved me, and I couldn't be more grateful.

Not everyone is this lucky.

TickingAlongNicely · 30/12/2024 20:59

I was born not breathing.

I would imagine they didn't have much of a choice. Any method to prevent pregnancy (such as withdrawal) was condemned by the church, and was probably ineffective anyway. Pregnancy and childbirth was seen as part of being married. And it was either marriage or the nunnery.

lemondropsandchimneytops · 30/12/2024 20:59

I may have died in childbirth but if not then, definitely a week later with a severe secondary bleed. Although saying that, we needed IVF to conceive so more likely I'd still be alive but childless!

That’s why nunneries were a very popular option back then

CanadianJohn · 30/12/2024 21:00

I damn near died a few months ago. Had an intestinal blockage caused by a "kinked" bowel Pain started on Thursday, I suffered till Saturday, thinking it was "something I ate", called an ambulance early Saturday morning, no surgeon available until Monday.

Even 100 years ago the treatment would have laxatives/purgatives, and would have been ineffective.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 30/12/2024 21:01

Nope, would never have been born as DM had a caesarean. Then I had appendicitis as a child, and if I hadn’t had that my first pregnancy would have killed me - baby had triploidy, I had pre-eclampsia and a termination at 18 weeks.

EveryDayisFriday · 30/12/2024 21:01

I was caesarian section so never born. 🙁

bruffin · 30/12/2024 21:01

I had pre eclampsia and was in hospital for 7 weeks, and 2 years ago had diabetic ketosis without acidosis and went straight onto insulin, so unlikely.

Also had measles as a child which i was really unwell for a while.

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/12/2024 21:02

Probably a bad allergic reaction in my early twenties would have seen me off.

Onlyvisiting · 30/12/2024 21:02

I'd never have been born, my mother would likely have died as a child, if not then died in childbirth with her first breech baby, and if not then of ever increasing pre eclampsia on future pregnancies.
If I'd made it to birth I'd probably still be here, assuming I wasn't taken out by the ear infection or the UTIs that required antibiotics.

Talesfromtheriverbank · 30/12/2024 21:02

No. Dead at 6 from measles.

DarkAndTwisties · 30/12/2024 21:02

I'd have died from a post partum haemorrhage.

Frith2013 · 30/12/2024 21:02

I would have died shortly before birth. (Breech with prolapsed cord).

ScruffMuffin · 30/12/2024 21:03

No idea if I'd have survived birth. I was born by forceps in the 1970s, after a very long labour.

Had I survived that, asthma or pneumonia would have claimed me by now. DH would have died from sepsis aged 45. Our DCs would still be OK... although I suppose they might well have picked up one of the childhood illnesses that they now receive vaccinations for.

Fallinggliders · 30/12/2024 21:03

Rubella as a toddler would’ve seen me off !!
