Would you still be alive if you lived in the 16th century?

I would have died aged 7 from appendicitis. If not then childbirth or an infected tooth would have finished me off in my early 20's.

I would probably have died of measles or something else we are vaccinated against.

Watching Wolf Hall and the sweating sickness would have finished a lot of us off.

AbsoluteGenius · 30/12/2024 22:56

I would have survived childbirth both times but would have been blind as a bat

Switcher · 30/12/2024 22:56

Childbirth I'd probably have survived, less sure about my tooth infections.

JohnTheRevelator · 30/12/2024 22:58

I'd have probably either bled to death at the age of 4 when I bit halfway through my tongue. Or I'd have carked it when I had an incarcerated umbilical hernia at the age of 49,which was about 24 hours from killing me. Failing that,a pulmonary embolism 6 years ago when I was 55 would have done the job.

JohnTheRevelator · 30/12/2024 23:00

Oh, forgot my hypertension. I've been on medication for it for 26 years. I don't suppose that would have been available in the 16th century. Makes me so glad I wasn't around then!

The sweating sickness is so interesting, the exact cause still isn’t known!

LunaNorth · 30/12/2024 23:01

I’d have died in childbirth.

That any hyena’s survive giving birth at all is something I find quite incredible.

Worth googling but it is wince inducing reading.

Bloody hell, that was some Google.

DD1 would have died at birth. DS would have died at four from an insect bite that got badly infected. The rest of us would be alright

Ikeameatballs · 30/12/2024 23:03

I’d have died in pregnancy

LunaNorth · 30/12/2024 23:03

Multiple kidney infections would have done for me before that, actually.

NinaOakley · 30/12/2024 23:04

Difficult one! Might have died in childbirth. Without access to an excess of sugar I don’t know if sepsis from a tooth would have been an issue.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/12/2024 23:04

I think I probably would. Several serious illnesses as a pre-vaccine child, fought them-all off. Get the occasional colds/sore throat etc. but they’re gone next day.

DorothyStorm · 30/12/2024 23:05

I, like many others on here, would have died in childbirth. As would my mother and niece. But not just in the 16th century. In other places in the world today I would not have survived.

But then I've also had frequent bacterial tonsillitis before then so might not even have got to 20. One bout was so bad I couldn't even swallow my own saliva and lost a huge amount of weight.

LunaNorth · 30/12/2024 23:07

I’ve just read about hyena childbirth.

I don’t see what they have to laugh about 😬

Gcsunnyside23 · 30/12/2024 23:11

Thought I would still be going then remember I have asthma, severe allergies and has recurring tonsillitis, severe chest infections, chicken pox, German measles as a child and if I'd made it through I would have finished myself off from the pain of two absesses at the same time

Wednesdayschilld · 30/12/2024 23:11

I’d have died in childbirth at 25. Full placenta previa and massive hemorrhage.

toolongiroamedinthenight · 30/12/2024 23:12

Probably dead at birth from rhesus disease, and also born by caesarean. If not, both me and my daughter would have died in childbirth.

2ndMrsdeWinter · 30/12/2024 23:12

I’m asthmatic - would have likely died at some point in childhood. If not, childbirth would have taken me and my firstborn anyway.

NotMeekNotObedient · 30/12/2024 23:15

I was a forceps delivery. Barring that probably a common infection would have got me. Otherwise post partum hemorrhage with DD would have done it!

WaystarRoy · 30/12/2024 23:21

Probably died in childbirth as had retained placenta and 4th degree tear with DD1, although I guess it is unlikely she would have been a 10.5lb baby in 16th century, with less food available (I assume). So maybe my birth injuries wouldn’t have been so bad?

TheCatCameBack112 · 30/12/2024 23:24

I may have made it through childhood, I had a fair few doses of antibiotics but they were dished out like sweeties in the 80s. In 1999 I had severe tonsillitis that required three courses of abx so may have finished me off.

When pregnant, I had a very over active thyroid. It didnt respond to medication and I couldn't take radioactive therapy. I had surgery at 15w. I suspect Ye Olde Me would have died. In any case Dc1 was ventouse and tricky. One or both of us would have carked it. I've had very good health since then.

My dh and dd2 would all be fine. Dd1 never had more than a sniffle until recently when she had glandular fever and a peritonsillar abscess (quinsy). That probably would have killed her

wavingfuriously · 30/12/2024 23:26

No I would have died aged 19 having developed an auto immune condition

DoggoQuestions · 30/12/2024 23:32

The worst I've had is UTI/ear infection/minor infections so probably yes. But I'm fully vaccinated so I could well have caught smallpox or TB or measles or something back then.

However, I'd never actually have been born in the 16th century as my parents' marriage wouldn't have been allowed.

Londonmummy66 · 30/12/2024 23:32

I'd have died from Mastitis after DD1. I have never felt so ill in my life nor had the out of hours GP out so quickly.

Miniaturemom · 30/12/2024 23:33

Would have died at birth-premie and gastroschisis
